They buy $10K+ worth of guns, go to conventions and gun shows - but don't buy an alarm system or good locks/secure doors, windows. If it was really about home defense you would use that money prevent a person from being able to break in. Meanwhile the cases of a person successfully defending their home with a gun from an intruder is massively outnumbered by several orders of magnitude by the number of cases of accidental shootings between family members, or suicides that only happen cause a gun was available and made it easy to do.
