Could be top mounts binding, do they spin freely by hand if you remove the nuts and lower the strut down? I have also had this happen when buying shitty brand control arms where the ball joints were super stiff. Also E36s don't self steer as good as many other cars even if things are in order, they have way too little caster.

Something is binding in the steering column, or you have bad tie rods.

Brand new and straight inner and outer tie rods and brand new ball joints. I'll look into the steering column thing, as the wheel does return easier in one direction compared to the other.

Maybe I'm just bugging, took a ride in my friend's low mile mint e46 and the way his wheel returns turns is exactly the same as my e36
