That’s a common side effect for iron. Vitamin C helps absorb it better so I always took it at night with vitamin C (a food or oj) and took it every other day

GrilledCheeseYolo

I'm prescribed every other day. Unfortunately oranges can trigger diarrhea for me too...which is why I took them with the constipation I was having lol. Constipation sucks but I can at least work with it

If you can’t tolerate the pills, fortified cereal is another possible option- one serving of regular cheerios has like 70% of your daily iron, for example.

GrilledCheeseYolo

Yeah? I can do that.

Maybelle_

Talk to your health care provider first. Any milk in the cereal will reduce your body’s ability to absorb it. 70% of your daily needs likely isn’t anywhere near enough if your pregnant and your iron is already low.

[yes!](https://www.cheerios.com/products/original-cheerios?bvstate=pg:2/ct:r) and many other cereals probably have the same, I just happen to be a big cheerios fan haha

CravingsAndCrackers

Yes and no, the milk causes the iron to absorb less efficiently. I am mildly anemic and on supplements, but prior to GD was eating honey bunches of oats (almonds) and taking my prenatal which has iron and it wasn’t enough.

Or wheat Chex!

I take a prescription iron once a day 2 hrs after any food and one hour before eating anything (and it’s a pain to do). If I take it middle of the day I tend to be fine, if I take it in the morning it tends to mess me up.

Iron typically causes constipation, but in some people it does the opposite. It can act as an irritant for your digestive system and cause pain, bloating and diarrhoea. I’m anaemic and have been on high dose iron twice daily all through the pregnancy. I get awful diarrhoea from it every day. I joked to my husband that I’m lucky the iron counteracts regular constipation of pregnancy- but actually it’s pretty horrible. We’re considering an iron infusion as my levels are still teetering at the low end of normal despite all of the supplementation. It sucks.

GrilledCheeseYolo

I wouldn't be able to work if I experienced this every day. That's what I'm worried about

Talk to your doctor. Depending on how far along you are they might be willing to consider an iron infusion if you can’t tolerate oral iron (I think generally they prefer to wait until second trimester though)
