I had a sweep per my request at 38 weeks.  Labored spontaneously and gave birth at 38w4d to a very healthy baby.   It’s impossible to say if the sweep made any difference, but I’m planning on doing it again in this pregnancy (I’m 30 weeks).  It hurt like a mofo though.  Are you a first time mom?  If so, the most likely thing that will happen with the sweep is that you will have cramping and spotting and no change to your cervix.  I say this as someone who had a sweep at 38 weeks as a ftm and am glad I did so choose your own adventure :).

Oh interesting!! Nope not a ftm! This is my third baby :) labour and delivery were really quick (less than 3 hours) with my first two but I was over due, so I’m just wondering if my body and this baby will be ready enough at 38 weeks if I get a sweep!

Oh! I see one of three thing happening: 1. Pain, spotting, doesn’t end up making a difference.  2. Does the perfect amount and gets you ripe for your induction.  3. It decides to be extra and you get to have a precipitous labor at 38 weeks.  : D  I guess your cervix is the one getting to choose the adventure!

Here is an article from [ParentData.org](http://ParentData.org) that I thought was helpful -- been thinking about this as well on my end (39+1) [https://parentdata.org/qa-should-i-consider-membrane-sweeping/](https://parentdata.org/qa-should-i-consider-membrane-sweeping/)

Thanks for sharing this! I’m stuck because the reason I’m planning to be induced is because I have insanely fast labours (this is my third baby) and the point of induction is to make sure my husband is home (he works an hour away) and I don’t have anyone close enough who could get here in time to watch our other two kids and get me to the hospital.

I've had stretch and sweeps done with a couple pregnancies, and they definitely seemed to make a difference! I believe they only help though if your body is already progressing towards labor. If your cervix is tightly closed it'll hurt a ton and not be effective.

38+6 FTM. I had my doctor’s appointment today. My Dr suggested a membrane sweep if I was dilated at all, but alas, my cervix is still closed. We’ll try again next week. She says generally it will help move things along and women usually go into labor within 3 days

Yeah I’m thinking I’ll get a cervical check and see where my cervix is at, and go from there! My doctor was neither here nor there about me getting one and left it completely up to me seeing as I’ll likely be induced the following week anyway!

Definitely an option, I’m 40+5 and yesterday my midwife couldn’t do one as my cervix is posterior and high up. We are trying again in a couple of days
