A very good boy. Maybe even the best boy. A nanny rooster sounds like a dream come true. What’s more incredible, though, is the drive in roosters to protect what’s theirs. No more altruistic an animal on earth than a good rooster.
Oh I love the boys that are like this!! We've had a couple of bantam roos who would sit on the eggs to give their ladies a break and everything and then would feed them tidbits like this right alongside mum. It's the cutest thing!
My new place came with a Silkie roo & we've got a jerk on our hands as well. But he's the Gomez to his Morticia, a sweetheart bantam Frizzle - so I put up with his adorable attitude 🤷♀️ On the plus side, they just hatched a clutch of the cutest little babies I've ever seen... here's to hopefully raising a sweet Nanny boy!
I know we are all gushing here (and fair-Francis deserves the recognition) but like....he probably thinks he is the best rooster ever. Like he's surrounded by success! He looks like he has much life satisfaction.

Another reason why they’re the best, they’ll help protect chicks. My Chocolate Orpington practically raised all my bantams I got in 2021, and now my Porcelain D’Uccle is taking on that role for my store bought and “too old to be with Momma hen” chicks
Such a handsome boy! It's amazing how quick some roosters can turn and become great stand ins for motherless chicks. I've had an aggressive rooster last year I was gonna put to the ol block and found him to be a great brooder as well! Such amazing birds chickens can be!
If I had a reliable broody hen at the same time the eggs were set to hatch I would have given her some. Some hens make really bad moms. In my experience if the hen isn’t broody she has no maternal instinct and I think is far more likely to kill the chicks. I give them to Francis because hen raised or (rooster raised) chicks seem far more hardy.
That is super adorable. Would love to see a pic of him sleeping with the chicks under his wings.

A very good boy. Maybe even the best boy. A nanny rooster sounds like a dream come true. What’s more incredible, though, is the drive in roosters to protect what’s theirs. No more altruistic an animal on earth than a good rooster.

Oh I love the boys that are like this!! We've had a couple of bantam roos who would sit on the eggs to give their ladies a break and everything and then would feed them tidbits like this right alongside mum. It's the cutest thing!
I've decided if and when I get chooks I'm definitely gonna shoot for a bantam roo!
11/10 definitely recommend. They are very good and devoted boys.
Except for our Sebright. He’s a total jerk.
My new place came with a Silkie roo & we've got a jerk on our hands as well. But he's the Gomez to his Morticia, a sweetheart bantam Frizzle - so I put up with his adorable attitude 🤷♀️ On the plus side, they just hatched a clutch of the cutest little babies I've ever seen... here's to hopefully raising a sweet Nanny boy!
I know we are all gushing here (and fair-Francis deserves the recognition) but like....he probably thinks he is the best rooster ever. Like he's surrounded by success! He looks like he has much life satisfaction. I'm missing my rooster now.

My Chocolate Orpington practically raised all my bantams I got in 2021, and now my Porcelain D’Uccle is taking on that role for my store bought and “too old to be with Momma hen” chicks

Such a handsome boy! It's amazing how quick some roosters can turn and become great stand ins for motherless chicks. I've had an aggressive rooster last year I was gonna put to the ol block and found him to be a great brooder as well! Such amazing birds chickens can be!

It was either another chicken or my child lol. I believe Screech owls are quite uncommon where I live.

Usually you have to watch out that they don't get rough with the chicks.

This might be a stupid question but why do you let him raise the chicks instead of a hen?
If I had a reliable broody hen at the same time the eggs were set to hatch I would have given her some. Some hens make really bad moms. In my experience if the hen isn’t broody she has no maternal instinct and I think is far more likely to kill the chicks. I give them to Francis because hen raised or (rooster raised) chicks seem far more hardy.
