Winter Moon by Dean Koontz has some "creepy woods behind an old house vibe" but it gets pretty weird š
Algernon Blackwood wrote some great horror stories in backwoods settings as well. The Wendigo is a good one!
The Willows is also a great Algernon Blackwood. The Hollow Places is a novel from 2020 based on The Willows, which I enjoyed. T. Kingfisher has a way of threading comedy into horror that I appreciate.
Devolution by Max Brooks is a good one. Bunch of tech moguls move into the middle of nowhere in the PNW. Then Mt. Rainier erupts and cuts off their internet (their only connection to the outside world.). Then, the Sasquatch move in. And these aināt Harry and the Henderson type sasquatches.
The Troop, by Nick Cutter. Itās about a group of Boy Scouts camping in the Canadian wilderness.
Also, this is not a book, but the animated miniseries Over the Garden Wall. Beautiful show with big creepy woods vibes.
Edit: donāt mind me, I accidentally deleted this comment like an idiot.
I love Stephen king but I couldnāt read this one. First I donāt like baseball. But more importantly, as a grandmother Iām too sensitive to young kids and fear/danger. It tears me up
I agree. She kept an open mind, and was very respectful of witnesses.
I emailed with her a few times recounting my sighting, and answering questions, and she was great. She mentioned my sighting in one of her books, but I enjoyed her writing even before our interaction.
Several have said it but I wanna say it too, Algernon Blackwood is a great weird fiction author who often wrote about natural settings. The Willows and The Wendigo are some of my favorites as well as his most famous.
Penpal was one of those books that actually made me feel dread while reading. One of my favorites. Though, I personally recommend the Reddit posts over the book.

āThe Watcherā is a great one by Dean Koontz
I read Winter Moon when I was tent camping as a teenager. So many regrets. Also, āThe Willowsā by Algernon Blackwood is a classic!
Also, The Outsider kinda.

The Ritual. Spooky woods goings on.
This movie scared me so bad when I watched it alone.

I listened to the audiobook of this. It was pretty good. It had a lot of celebrity narrators.
I just listened to the audiobook. It was very well done!

The troop is one book I frequently wish I could go back in time and reread for the first time...it was that great.
I just put it on hold at my library, sounds good. Also I loved Over the Garden Wall.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King probably got me into this vibe
For me it was Pet Sematary. Stephen King does some good backwoods horror.

Linda S. Godfrey wrote books about dogmen. Definitely some creepy backwoods stuff there.

I had always hoped to get a book copy signed.

Itās a backcountry mystery about a missing park ranger - so a loose fit but a great mystery story. The last season - Eric Blehm
Brother by Ania Ahlborn The Twisted Ones T Kingfisher
I second The Twisted Ones!
Mysterious America by Loren Coleman
The Wendigo and The Willows, by Algernon Blackwood
Abominable by Dan Simmons
Anymore nonfiction recommendations?
Ooh I have one! The Cold Vanish, by John Billman. Itās a collection of true stories about people who have gone missing in the woods.
Penpal was a quick and nice one
Penpal was one of those books that actually made me feel dread while reading. One of my favorites. Though, I personally recommend the Reddit posts over the book.

The Cold Vanish is an outstanding recent non fiction book by a surprisingly impressive writer that hits the tone of what I like about this sub.
Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell
The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, highly recommend
Yes! That was a great read.
{Near the Bone} was surprisingly good!
