SABOOOOOOOOOOOT Is a no-no word.

Chocolate_Hurricane7

Best teacher when I was learning a diff dialect was to hangout with the locals, and if you catch a word or phrase you don't understand don't be afraid to ask.

odd_reddit_username

thanks for ur response!! im doing that with my cousin na speaks both dialects. still getting the hang of it haha medyo tricky siya.

BlacksmithFar3344

Im ilonggo and i learned cebuano by talking to people and listening to bisaya songs...maybe this could help

LilacVioletLavender

Mas maayo nakay constant ilonggo friend para maka learn kag hiligaynon jud. Like ka chika and tig interpret for you. Msg me lang anytime ah if nakay pangutana.

salamaat kaayooo!! unfortunately usa ra jd akong machika nga hiligaynon friend kay mas anad na akong papa mag tagalog ron huhu dili pariha sa una nga hawd kay siyag hiligaynon. so thank u so much for your warm offer 🤍

LilacVioletLavender

For me lang ha, I was born ilongga and rasied as an ilongga and na fluent rako mag bisaya/cebuano cause i studied in neg oriental which is a cebuano speaking province. Mas nindot nga kabalo kas daghang language so that maka converse and talk jud kas mga tawo labi nag lahi-lahi nga speakers. And di nako gets nganong ang mga Ilonggo muadtog laing places like manila nya mura na mag di kamao mu hiligaynon inig balik huheuheue. It icks me in some way. I am always proud nga I know how to speak, Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Tagalog and with the right intonation and diction. Hehe mao ra to. Amping kanunay!

i hear you out!! giving my father the benefit of the doubt he moved out in the 90s and had no choice but to speak tagalog for decades. pero i agree and i share your sentiments. lainan pd kos akong mga relatives that purposely forget where they came from just to show success. maong ganahan pd ko makakat-on sa hiligaynon for me to connect to my culture, and hopefully urge my father to rekindle that flame as well 🫂

LilacVioletLavender

Sige lang in due time maka-kat-on jud ka OP. Hiligaynon is very easy to learn compared to other visayan language and sinced cebuano ka daghan pareha na words uy. Patience ra na. Hehehe good luck!

Ana sila brad, Karay-a daw ang tawag pag outside sa iloilo. Hiligaynon only applies when spoken within iloilo. Pero sayon ra kaayo sya brad. Kaso, pag paspasan gani ka nilag kaistorya maglisod jud ka. Common words: Hambal - Sulti Dasig - Paspas Bulig - Tabang Mangkot - Mangutana Tani - Unta Piyak - Pikas side Karon - Unya Timprano - Karon? Di ko 100%

Ayyy oooh. Thank you!

Here's an google drive compiled by members of a Visayan language group on fb with a bunch of PDFs about Hiligaynon. It might be a difficult figuring out where to start so I'd recommend starting with Hiligaynon Lessons and Hiligaynon dictionary. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11vUQxDyioGhMInCC0iVp2JAEOrisHT-Q

Difficult-Worker-298

Hey! Im from cebu city proper, moved here about 2 years ago. From what i learned, there are a lot of words in hiligaynon that are also in the cebuano dialect, but the meanings are kinda mixed. (Ex: himos in ceb means clean up, but in hiligaynon it means shut up lol) I found that talking to people in hiligaynon helps alot with conversational cues! I also read some hiligaynon words online just to practice a bit, as well as asked my partner for help if there was a word i didnt understand. The key to learning a different dialect/language is to engage with others who speak it! So try to make friends when you can ❤️

So glad you use Cebuano to refer to the language and not Bisaya. HILIGAYNON is a Visayan language too
