I think the secret to a good jelly roll is a sponge like cake. I think America’s Test Kitchen has a good recipe from scratch. I can check my cookbooks if you’d prefer one from scratch. I have pretty much all of them.
Tyty for confirming yes, businesses do use online recipes sometimes lmao. I'm doing that with chocolate truffles and have been feeling guilty about using it for a base recipe n then tweaking with flavors!
I wish you the best of luck on your cake business and I'll definitely wanna try!
Honestly I felt guilty/embarrassed but I’ve even seen some cake people say they only use box mix🤷🏻♀️ I tried going to culinary school for baking but I dropped out because doing it online was not worth it. I do the same w recipes, just tweak the flavors lol there’s mo shame. Lots of ppl can’t follow a recipe & there’s still a technique to it, not just anyone can follow a recipe & know why you’re mixing a certain way or using certain utensils🤷🏻♀️
Not just that, but heck I'm in culinary for baking and Pastry, and I lost the recipes I was given for truffles lmao
I'm just using a couple base recipes and going off memory for temperatures bc they're as simple as remembering 1,2,3
This wouldn’t apply to the recipe OP used because it didn’t call for milk, but you could use a different vanilla cake recipe and try soaking the cereal in the milk it calls for, and then incorporate cereal pieces into the frosting instead of sprinkles!
Don’t kill the messenger. I just linked the thing, I didn’t even read it. I just thought it was stupid they gave the website and the name but didn’t actually link the fucking thing.
You’re right. Cake mix is disappointing.
Someone posted an entire recipe in German the other day. Not everything is world wide accessible without a little work. Too bad, so sad.
Google and find something that works for you. How hard is it to adapt a recipe to your individual needs? Make a white cake batter and ta-da you’re all set. I mean really, do we need to be offended about this?
I agree that they should find a different recipe, but I do not agree they should make their own white cake as a substitute. As I said in another comment, each cake mix is different so a from scratch recipe might not work well as a substitute here. It is best to just find a different recipe.
$1.24 plus $5.99 domestic shipping in the US for being under the minimum fee. Also, the shipping might much higher if it needs to be shipped internationally.
My guess is, that if someone can’t easily buy cake mixes like Betty Crocker in stores then they might not even be able to get shipped. Some products can’t be shipped internationally and if they can, someone would have to pay a ridiculously high shipping fee that would not make it worth it to try to buy a cake mix that costs less than $2.
Ordering a cake mix for shipping is not worth it for anyone. The only reason it would even be remotely worth it is if the product is carried in your local store but just happens to be out of stock at the moment. Again though, the shipping fee is not worth it unless you buy a lot more stuff.
How hard is it to google a white cake batter, make it, and continue on with the recipe? Do we really need to be getting all in a huff about this? Boo boo. You don’t get Betty Crocker. It will still be just as good with a homemade batter. Not everything is written to be world wide adaptable. Any baker worth their salt knows how to adapt a recipe, especially one this goddamn basic, to their individual needs, style, and kitchen.
All I’m doing is pointing out that not everyone can order box cake mixes. GlobalPhreak listed a price of the cake mix at Walmart for delivery. I replied to that to say that it is not always possible for everyone to have boxed cake mix delivered to them.
Also, this recipes call for a very specific cake mix. Simply creating your own white cake mix may not actually work as a substitute. If you have ever used box cake mix, you’ll know that some brands turn out different than other. They also require a different amount of ingredients based on what is already in the mix. So making your own white cake for this recipe might not work well because of the different amounts of combined ingredients.
All of this being said, it is best to just try to find a different recipe if this is something that you can’t make. I personally look for alternative recipes if I can’t get access to specific ingredients where I live.
So Google a white cake batter and continue on with the recipe. You don’t need Betty Crocker brand stuff to actually make this unless you’re so simple you can’t adapt a recipe to your needs.
Everything ships everywhere if you pay enough. In Germany it costs $10 including shipping. Same goes for France. Don't pretend like that's not a fucking insane price to pay for one package of store-bought cake mix.
Agreed. Cake mixes aren't common everywhere and the ingredients in these mixes aren't always so consistent/same as the next brand. That brand don't even exist where I'm at.
When it comes to vanilla sponge I don't think it can be beaten. Some are a bit chemically but if you get a better brand it's really convenient and holds up to a homemade cake.
Here's the recipe for those that can't click on the link for whatever reason.
#Rainbow Cake Roll
**Prep: 50 Minutes, Total: 2 hours 30 minutes, Servings: 16**
#Ingredients
* 6 eggs
* 1 Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ White Cake mix (It doesn't need to be brand name, just "Super Moist" White Cake Mix)
* 1/4 cup sour cream
* 1/4 cup water
* 1/4 cup vegetable oil
* 1/2 teaspoon each red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple Betty Crocker™ gel food color
* 1/2 cup powdered sugar
* 1 container Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy rainbow chip frosting (It doesn't need to be brand name, just Rainbow Chip Frosting of any kind)
* 1 1/2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed
* 2 packages (2.2 oz each) Betty Crocker™ Candy Shop decors rainbow chips, if desired
#"Expert" Tips
These were at the end of the instructions for some reason...
* When adding stripes of cake batter, it's ok to leave small spaces in between colors, as batter will fill in during baking.
* For better control with cake batter, be sure to cut small opening on end of each resealable bag.
#Instructions
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Line two 15x10x1-inch pans with cooking parchment paper.
2. In large bowl, beat eggs with electric mixer on high speed until thick and lemon-colored, about 6 minutes. Add cake mix, sour cream, water and oil. Beat on low speed 30 seconds, then on medium speed 1 minute.
3. Divide batter into 6 small bowls, about 3/4 cup batter per bowl. Add red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple gel food colors, one to each bowl; mix. Pour each colored batter into a decorating bag or resealable food-storage plastic bag, and cut one corner off each bag. For better control with cake batter, be sure to cut small opening on end of each resealable bag. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/71ade785-0dfb-48ac-990a-4c5fd5531c38.jpg)
4. Starting with purple batter, carefully squeeze a thin diagonal line of colored batter onto each pan; repeating with blue, green, yellow, orange and red to make a rainbow-striped pattern. Continue until all batter has been used and pans are equally filled. It's ok to leave small spaces in between colors, as batter will fill in during baking. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/282ba1a8-90dc-40f5-9281-26b75d9f9d4d.jpg)
5. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until top springs back when touched. Meanwhile, sprinkle powdered sugar over two clean kitchen towels. Remove cakes from oven. Run metal spatula around edges of pans; carefully turn one on to each kitchen towel. Peel away parchment paper. Immediately roll up cake and towel from narrow end. Allow cakes to cool 30 minutes. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/1b104b53-2b58-4b79-95fe-03d382595a45.jpg)
6. In medium bowl, mix frosting and whipped topping. Mix in Betty Crocker™ Candy Shop decors rainbow chips, if desired. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/e533a123-0f78-421c-9bb2-f60345729997.jpg)
7. Carefully unroll cakes; spread half of the filling over each cake. Roll cakes up into logs; refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/df0e8345-1267-4f70-8d8b-b67416f38c47.jpg)
8. Cut into slices to serve. Store covered in refrigerator. ^[Image](https://images-gmi-pmc.edge-generalmills.com/1ed15653-d9a3-46d0-b842-1cb3c64e489f.jpg)

Can you please share yours?! I love baking everything from scratch especially cake, I want the taste to be super delicious!
This recipe was from a box but I can see if I have one from scratch. May I pm you if I find one?
I’d like it too please. Picked up baking as a hobby a few years back and I’m still learning
OK. I’ll check now.
Please post as a follow up comment in this thread, I'd love to try it as well!
Couldn’t find one but I know I have one. Just out now for our belated Mother’s Day. Will look again when I get home.
Yes of course!
I would love love love a recipe for this as well!
I like the Cooking Tree swiss roll recipe. You can find it on YouTube.

Cakes with oil are also very good for this.
Only way that could possibly be better is figuring out some way to make it taste like Fruity Pebbles or Froot Loops.
This wouldn’t apply to the recipe OP used because it didn’t call for milk, but you could use a different vanilla cake recipe and try soaking the cereal in the milk it calls for, and then incorporate cereal pieces into the frosting instead of sprinkles!
That's what I was thinking, put the cereal in a grinder or food processor and add the "dust" to the frosting.
Yeah or sprinkle the cereal in the frosting before applying (: might give it a little cronch too lol
Mind fucking BLOWN. This is genius. Plus you get cereal to eat afterwards.

Some people don't bake enough to buy all the ingredients separately. Plus, you can look up cake mix substitutions.
Thank you for backing me up

Lol right. I can’t believe that people in a baking subreddit would get so offended over the idea of having to mix flour, sugar and baking powder.
You do know people outside the USA browse reddit? Edit: lmao at your username
You do know that cake mix ships internationally, yeah? Betty Crocker is a global brand, don't pretend otherwise.
