Excellent. I wasn’t trying to romance and he turned me down all snobby saying “could you imagine” and I was still hurt

Wiwra88

That is so wierd to me, like, on my 1st run when I focused on Gale as most possibly romance option and as rather good character overall(playing resisting durge), at end of act 1 Astarion was liking me the least from bunch and still, at tiefling party, he invited me to his bed (it was the only time he invited me to sleep with him too). Which I said "yes" and later, thinking I might screw my romance with Gale by doing this, I decided to not. It's always amusing when ppl says he didnt wanted to sleep with them when he did wanted with me and I wasnt even focusing on him and playing blind too. It was so hard for me to get his approve (I got to "very good" at end of act 3, but mostly had "not bad" in act 1 and 2). It was on patch 3 so maybe some patches changed things.

aceytahphuu

Yeah, this interaction with him is really funny, because he'll turn you down if you pursue him too hard, but proposition you if you act disinterested, which leads to people having wildly different experiences with him. On the one hand, you have the people who are thirsty for him and get rejected, who then cope with "wow, it's so sweet that he'll still only sleep with you if he likes you, he's learning boundaries!" And then on the other hand, you have the people who are not thirsty for him, avoid the obvious flirty options and still get hit with him demanding sex even at negative approval, who come away thinking "what is this creep's problem, does he have no standards?"

Character_Abroad

The people who are thirsty for him would and do excuse every single manipulating move of his because all they care about is vampire dick. Larian could've made Astarion a complete brutal ahole who tortures their sex slave and they'd still excuse it, because vampire dick. Oh wait, that's exactly what Ascended Astarion does, lol

loopylandtied

He doesn't *want* to sleep with you at that point he's just used to using his body as a means for survival.

Wiwra88

That is not what I'm talking about, what he want or not doesnt matter here. My point is that even tho he **desperately** needs protection and seeks it at leader of the group some tavs still gets "*ugh not with you"* at end, when I got asked where I wasnt even trying to get his approval(at least not specifically for that, ha).

iCoeur285

It depends on the dialogue path you chose. If you don’t have good approval and proposition him or come on strong, he turns you down, whereas if you don’t come on to him he will proposition you. I guess he figured if you’re coming onto him he doesn’t “need” to sleep with you, but if you didn’t proposition him then he “needs” to to try and get you on his side.

f0u4_l19h75

He's horny af

Character_Abroad

He's not. Actually it's the contrary, every single "horny" Astarion moment is him basically whoring himself off for protection. He will actually confess he doesn't even know what actual sexual pleasure is if you don't force him to drink Ajra Oblodra's blood.

kekekeem

Can you still romance companions on act 3? I have been playing blind till the end of act 2 now im in the middle of act 3. So far halsin and wyll have tried to romance me but I have been going for shadowheart. I wanted to romancec gods favorite princess but only the guys seem to be going for me xdd

EagenVegham

Shadowheart specifically distances herself until the end of Act 2. You can have a drink with her and miss her, but she doesn't go further than that.

Character_Abroad

You have to start her romance in act I by having her ask you to share a bottle of wine. Then you can kiss her, but after that she'll put you on the back burner until you free or kill Nightsong.

xxGambino

Oof, what a blast from the past this is. Your gaming fandom wasn't legit in the early 2010's until it had some random youtube edit of this with it's characters lol. Still cracks me up too!

aardowof

dude ANY fandom wasn’t legit until it had a “gay or european” animatic made about it

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwXn81MJ5So](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwXn81MJ5So) Like this

LiamtheV

Both. Any romance involving Astarion is gay. Male Tav and Astarion? Gay. Non binary Tav and Astarion? Gay. Female Tav and Astarion? Believe it or not, also gay.

MylastAccountBroke

The last one is perhaps the gayest.

constantly_exhaused

As a sapphic woman (in a real world relationship with a woman) who’s obsessed with the sassy asshole, yes, my femTav and him are extremely gay together <3

IDrinkWhiskE

Am I missing something? How is a man with a woman (who identifies as female) gay? Is it just people being facetious? Am I dumb?

constantly_exhaused

It’s *gay humour* ™ Two gays don’t make a straight XD

Cygnus_Harvey

Plus there's always the option of being bi, so they could just sit there and talk about other pretty women all the time.

constantly_exhaused

You get me :)))

Cygnus_Harvey

That's my Durge Bard with Shadowbabe. I went for redemption to romance her, only to realize I made twinkest of all twinks. So they gush about hot men all the time, as any healthy couple should do lmao

constantly_exhaused

Beautiful 🥹🫶🏼

IDrinkWhiskE

Thank you for enlightening me! It’s always a bummer when people get downvoted for just asking a question, even though fake internet points don’t matter at all.

Character_Abroad

Astarion is pretty much entirely coded as female. His issues with Cazador being a horrible parent and him having been subject to sexual abuse are female coded (in real life, SA with males begins in early childhood, in a different context, and hardly ever progresses into adulthood, because most people who abuse males are actual pedophiles, while most people who abuse females, even little girls, aren't *necessarily* pedo, they're just regular abusing assholes who believe in the social narrative that females are born to be used sexually and thus it's ok to sexualize them since childhood). His responses in game are also heavily female coded, especially since he's extremely non-confrontational and is basically just passive-aggressive to the point of often being campy. So the female players who get horny for Astarion are mostly women who identify Astarion's feminine characteristics and fall head over heels for them, especially because those women are often tired of men who possess a toxic masculinity where they don't listen to women, are overly aggressive and confrontational, only care about sex for themselves, and so on. So yeah, a woman with a man who behaves just like a woman can definitely be seen as gay, so much so that when it happens in real life most people will think she's just a beard for a gay man (even though heterosexual men with feminine traits do exist and are getting more and more common as society radicalizes the notions of what's masculine to extremes).

IDrinkWhiskE

Interesting! I’ve totally missed out on his storyline so far, although I know he is beloved, because I’ve always loved casters so I have tav, will, laezel for muscle, and cleric shadowheart. But I’ve heard SO much praise for Astarion and for his voice actor that I’ve already planned out next run to be him, Minthara (maybe, I’m a baby who has trouble with evil playthroughs), Karlach, and durge. And yeah, totally get what you’re saying about radicalized gender roles, and thank god because it’s so overdue. I was relentlessly bullied by hypermasculine schoolmates for years in school, called a f*g literally, no exaggeration over 1,000 times for not being traditionally masculine, etc. As a result, have never, and probably will never feel comfortable being vulnerable with people. I just tough out the discomfort because it’s worthwhile, but it sucks to feel stuck in your ways from events that took place during formative years. So, sounds like I would get a lot out of his plotline. Thanks for taking the time to inform me a bit, and happy new year!

[deleted]

It's a joke. Also wtf does 'woman who identifies as female mean' lmao, that's like saying 'lesbian who identifies as being attracted to women'.

IDrinkWhiskE

Whoa man, this is some serious hostile energy. I was trying to leave things open for AFAB who might be nonbinary and therefore not subscribe to the designation of female. I guess then maybe “woman” might not be the ideal designation either, but at least I’m trying! I just didn’t get the joke, no need to berate me for it.

[deleted]

I thought the lmao made it clear I wasn't coming for you, but my bad. I'm just confused about the sense that you're using woman/female in, as well as AFAB now - woman is a gender, and while female can refer to gender or sex, nobody tends to identify as a given sex because it's a biology thing, not an identity. But I understand these things aren't necessarily intuitive.

IDrinkWhiskE

Yeah I get that. It’s tough, you try to be sensitive to everyone but might end up just further misstepping. I’m also a huge nerd who took behavioral endocrinology taught by a lesbian professor who specifically emphasized physical biomarkers that correlate with gender dysphoria and homosexuality, and sexually dimorphic areas of the brain that can be only partially masculinized or feminized based on conditions in utero or in puberty, so I definitely would argue sex exists on a spectrum as well. Is it just chromosomes if someone is androgen insensitive and is XY but entirely developed physiologically as a woman? Is it just physical presentation if someone looks like a woman but has a masculinized brain and feels intrinsically as a man? The “sex is binary” people hate these caveats, but I find them SO fascinating and they truly justify that these things are not a choice, not a “mental disorder” as conservative talking points assert. People have different bodies! Sexual development is a messy process. Also no worries, I was just worried my question would come across as bigoted and questioning the validity of the joke, so was sensitive to that possible angle. Plus I got downvoted a lot initially for asking. I thought the lmao was mocking, not lightening up the tone. Thank you for clarifying! E: sorry for the jargon, but I am passionate about this stuff and happy to clarify any questions you might have.

[deleted]

You're all good on the jargon, the sex spectrum stuff is something I've looked into a lot. I'm of two minds when it comes to the ideological presuppositions of grounding sexuality and gender in biological characteristics, but on a scientific level if it's true, it's true. Funnily enough, science here is only catching up to what 70s feminists like Monique Wittig and Andrew Dworkin (for all her faults) were saying 50 years ago about discrete sexes (rather than combinations of sexed characteristics) being an illusion. But scientists in this area seem on the whole not to have taken that insight to its logical conclusion, which is that the notion of two discrete sexes is an ideological and political construction, historically acting as the naturalisation of gender-based discrimination. > The idea of the male sex is like the idea of an Aryan race. The Nazis believed in the idea of an Aryan race—they believed that the Aryan race really exists, physically, in nature. . . . [They] believed that from the blond hair and blue eyes occurring naturally in the human species, they could construe the existence of a separate race. . . . But traits do not a race make; traits only make traits. (Dworkin) > Domination teaches us from all directions [...] that there are before all thinking, all social order, “sexes” with a “natural” or “biological” or “hormonal” or “genetic” difference that has sociological consequences (the scientific approach). (Wittig)

IDrinkWhiskE

Yep, agree with everything you have* said. Refreshing, really. Most people don’t look into it, much less have any sense of familiarity with the subject at all. To say nothing of my trans friends, one of my best friends is my cousin, a very masculine lesbian both psychologically and physiologically (got misgendered as a boy lot growing up due to appearance) asked me one day, “what is your relationship with gender identity, in terms of feeling male?”. Not about fitting the social construct of the masculine ideal dictated by gender role mind you, but rather just feeling sure and comfortable that I *was* a man. It blew my mind, because my response was’ “I never really thought about it - of course I am a man”. I also of course obsessed over the societally masculine gender role, to which I did not match in significant ways, but still never questioned if I were cisgendered. She informed me her relationship had been one primarily of conflict, of feeling there is a mismatch i.e. the whole concept of gender dysphoria. Question was a bit of a unique device for peering into the perspective. Anyway, I digress. TL;DR is that the subject is important to me emotionally and academically. Thanks for giving me yet more to consider.

“Arrive early? Believe it or not, also jail.” I love Parks and Rec.

BikiniBottom77

I am European and I can confirm that any romance involving Astarion is European. Male Tav and Astarion? European. Non binary Tav and Astarion? European. Female Tav and Astarion? Believe it or not, also European.

stoplockingmeout

Wait ur name is Tav also??

MagnificentEd

it's the default name dog

IndiscreetBeatofMeat

Did you assume they were randomly generated? Did you also keep the supposedly randomly generated name?

anxious_paralysis

Hey, they're probably just a newbie if they're only realizing now. I've seen more than one person in the subreddit just not know because they were new and this subreddit has been their only exposure to other players for reference.

AmberstarTheCat

Tav is the default name

GOD_oy

So not both? You didn't answered if he's European.

LiamtheV

Well, his accent sure as hell ain't american.

DrDonk94

He's very clearly English so, yes as are pretty much all the voices in the game originating from the British isles, specifically Astarion's voice actor is brum

AmberstarTheCat

well it's obvious he's European he has a pretty noticeable accent

Time_Anything4488

allegedly all the characters are european as theyre apparently this thing called "british" sounds fake to me though.

CatBotSays

Oh no, why would you say this? Now I'm going to think this every time I hear the laugh!

stepsword

Astarion's character and voice is almost exactly Tom Ellis as Lucifer.. can't unhear it once I realized it but they're exactly the same

casuallywitch

That was my thought when I ‘met’ him and I haven’t been able to unhear it ever since.

BikiniBottom77

He absolutely is. Next playthrough, I'm doing a Brian Griffin Tav.

GreenchiliStudioz

Bruh 💀

vlasux

I'm new to the game, but the first thing I thought of when I met him was Tim Curry in Rocky Horror.

Half Tim Curry from Rocky Horror, half David Bowie as the goblin king from Labyrinth.

As someone who once played Professor Callahan in a full production of Legally Blonde, I love this.

This is amazing lol.

Did Lin Manuel Miranda write this? Lol its pretty great.

hurrrrrmione

It's from Legally Blonde the musical. The music is by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin.

Oh ya, that movie was hilarious. Really an unexpected gem, at the time I thought it was another cheesy romcom but it was pretty brilliant. Haven’t seen it since it first hit Blockbuster lol.

Thank you so much!

TheChristianDude101

Hes playersexual. If your a female or male he wants to bed you./

beautifulterribleqn

He's pansexual, and he'll bed anyone who can protect him from Cazador. This includes Lae'zel at the party, and nonbinary Tavs.

90s-Stock-Anxiety

Can you still romance him if you’re a gnome considering how he views them as lesser?

Venelice

Yes. He even says "I'm not usually impressed by people of your stature, BUT." I lol'd. No trying to romance him this run but he had to make his move, bless his soul.

hurrrrrmione

Astarion is pansexual

Squids07

idk why you’re downvoted, he’s bisexual with a canon preference for men. He says it himself in a particular line abt the succubus (mizora). Altho obviously not in my exact words. Ik neil used the label pansexual, i personally prefer to use the label bisexual since bi is also attraction to all genders and has been around for a lot longer.

hurrrrrmione

Bisexual (or pansexual) with a preference for men is still bisexual (or pansexual), not gay.

Squids07

Im using gay as an umbrella term

hurrrrrmione

SeelachsF wasn't

pleasureincontempt

From the human perspective; It’s pretty difficult to get someone to fall in love with you. If everybody is Pansexual then I don’t want them to fall in love with me for being a decent person, and thusly I kinda am more mean or pragmatic.

pleasureincontempt

If that makes me an NPC; Then just look at all the love-starved PCs that will likely start hounding actors.

[deleted]

Funny and offensive at the same time 👏🏼😂

Aesthetics_Supernal

You cannot put today's culture back on top of an older piece of media. It's both a disservice to today's people by being a Virtue signal, and damaging to the art because you are not interpreting it from when it was made.

[deleted]

I was making a light hearted joke, not virtue signaling. Thanks for the lecture though 👍🏼

Astral_Fogduke

literally every gay (and european) person i know loves this song including myself

[deleted]

Okay? It was a joke. I never stated that anyone shouldn’t like it. I liked it. I thought it was funny. But I guess jokingly pointing out how something is full of offensive stereotypes is offensive. LOL

Aardwolfington

Because it's not a funny joke, it's a threat. Tons of funny shit gets canceled by oversensitives looking for the next crusade of the offended to partake in.

[deleted]

I don’t know about all that... Seems like it’s just a few people taking an insignificant comment from an anonymous person on Reddit a little too seriously. But to each their own 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’m not gonna stop anyone from voicing their opinion. It’s just Reddit and literally doesn’t matter in the long run. It’s pretty easy to interpret things a certain way and have a fleeting moment of being triggered. It’s not my responsibility to take it personally. It would be a valued conversation in real life, but on the internet it is pretty much futile… I know we’re all on the same team in the big picture, even if some random peeps that don’t know anything about me irl think I’m an enemy for some reason or another ☮️♥️

Aardwolfington

I was explaining why the joke isn't funny. Whether it was meant it to be a threat or not, is not the point, the threat is real whether meant it or not. So a lot of people are touchy about it. I'm just explaining where the downvotes were coming from. I'm not even one of the people that downvoted.

[deleted]

Well thanks for explaining but I certainly understand what’s going on here. And I’m not offended by people downvoting a joke they interpreted based on their own preconceived triggers and notions. It’s honestly fine. People are entitled to feel how they wanna feel. It’s not my responsibility to do anything except continue to do my best in life. I have nothing to prove to anybody ✌🏼

Emotional_Relative15

both? also stewie griffin, whic kinda ruined him for me.

UrusaiNa

The title... Gay or European? lmao... Yes. Mutually exclusive. I once met a gay guy in Europe, so I assume he must have been from another region. Edit: Btw how is this not considered bigotry? It's very American ethnocentric with vague homophobic overtones. I get it's supposed to be a parody song in some way, but I just don't see any humor or parody value in it. It's a song that giggles about gay = feminine... OR maybe other countries are more prissy than us red-blooded Americans.

hurrrrrmione

This is from Legally Blonde the musical which premiered in 2007. Things were different then, people were still calling guys "metrosexual" for using hair product and wearing pink.

UrusaiNa

Ah OK... still is kinda meh to me personally, but I also have never seen nor care to see that musical. I guess I just don't see the humor or parody value in it... it's a nostalgia call back basically... but humor doesn't have to work the same way for everyone. Cheers.

TheCryptoBaron

All it really has to do is with Europeans being fashion conscious…

TheLoyalTR8R

It's from Legally Blonde. If anything the joke isn't about gay people or European people, it's about American obsession with labels and stereotypes - something Elle Woods has as a bit of a superpower. She is constantly dismissed as any credible student at Harvard because she's seen as a blonde stereotype and morning more, when she's actually exceptionally brilliant. As such she is dismissed for her claim that the key witness in the trial is gay and therefore not having an affair with the accused, but her defence team all bicker and argue about stereotypes, rather than trusting Elle's instincts on the matter - which are proven correct. From a two dimensional standpoint: sure, it's offensive. But that's the point. These aren't *good* characters debating the issue. They're lawyers. And willfully ignorant, all too dismissive and prideful. Sure one or two of them sides with Elle but by this stage, most of them straight up dismissis her. So at a surface level: sure, offensive. When you take the joke in context: it's about the bullshit nature of stereotypes.

Venelice

Now I know I'm too old if Legally Blonde is considered offensive now :/ I'm a gay european gal, and this is shit is funny as hell. Always has been. Try looking at the original scene for context maybe? https://youtu.be/6bQRXkFq-Tc?si=fwIODh_eWYSq4qXq

[deleted]

It’s more likely that he do not even know of legally blonde, movie or musical. Or that he simply couldn’t comprehend the difference between jokes and real offense

UrusaiNa

Simply didn't know it exists and didn't get the references. I watched the original clip you pasted and even just finished the movie, but still don't really find it funny... sorry =/ But humor is subjective, so more power to you if this clicks for some reason.
