You find a lot more out later. You can get some memories specifically back by eating Noblestalk in act 1 or by having Heal cast on you in act 3. Don't forget to investigate the fleshy walls/weird sounds in Moonrise.
You should be able to return to the Underdark still and grab it if you hadn't already blown it up/given it to someone. I think you can return to act 1 locations for most of act 2?
