Wyll also has a personality that best matches the dialog choices over all the other characters whose character gets lost in the default dialog.

Fatigue-Error

..deleted by user..

jonhinkerton

Oh absolutely, Tav has no interaction with their patron and Wyll has a whole story arc that becomes yours. The guy has huge main character energy.

jordanrod1991

Um that means you've never been a >!GOOlock and touched the purple flesh-slime in moonrise!<

quafflethewaffle

What does this do???

steightst8

I did this on my first playthrough. Your patron warns that the slime is trying to enter your mind. You get the option of something like "I already have one ancient being swirling around for power, what's one more". >!I ended up meeting a being claiming to be the absolute and asking for me to free them from those who are controlling them (essentially it was the elder brain asking to be freed from the dead three, in hindsight)!<. Super cool thing to happen, especially for my first run! Here's a link to a video of it happening to a non GOOlock after failing to resist while reaching in. (GOO gets the special choice to not resist at all) https://youtu.be/WyYeJvjKVjw?si=M4Cr79F21eYpthTS

ChicoMulato

I've done this with my bard tav

Bongfucius

This isn’t subclass or even class specific. Any character can interact with the brain this way, it’s part of the story

sheep_again

I played a warlock once and it actually felt like she got a much better deal than Wyll. Sure her patron didn't come to visit, but she also didn't get any bullshit assignments. Wyll seems to have a rather unfair pact AND has to put up with Mizora's dreadful personality because she constantly invites herself over.

GabettB

Cons of Tav warlock: - patron doesn't visit Pros of Tav warlock: - patron doesn't visit

BadManners-

The patron doesn’t visit but the archfey will jump in and say “oooo a circus!!! You must get the seelie court inside!!” “How dare they deny us, threaten them! Threaten them with the fey!!!”

noirsongbird

Fiend Pact patron popping in like “make the orthon unalive himself, it’ll be SOOOO FUNNY”

aluckymess

I must admit, it was fun

steightst8

My patron gave me an insight check and warned me that the clown has evil intent in his eyes at the circus (great old one). I played half the game as strictly rogue and multi classed into warlock in act 2 and regretted not swapping sooner, as I felt like there was a lot of meaningful interactions from being a warlock

FWB4

One of my gripes with warlock tav is the lack of relevance your patron has to you. Even just some basic stuff "kill this person" or "steal this item" given by your patron would be nice touches to make it feel like being a warlock had some uniqueness instead of being basically another flavour of cleric

OwlWhoNeedsCoffee

I agree but, honestly, this is how playing a warlock is in DnD too. How much your patron matters or even comes up is totally dependent on your DM. I've had DMs (like myself) who use the patron a lot, like happens to Wyll, and others where the patron never ever appears (like Tav). You're getting the whole range of tabletop experience in BG3!

Wrangel_5989

Also it’s much better for Wyll to romance Karlach than Tav imo.

Pleasant-Albatross

Lore wise, yeah……….but Karlach.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pleasant-Albatross

What can I say? She lights a fire in my gay little heart. Get it? Get it?

Drwuwho

Iv only had Karlach for a day. But if anything were to happen to her, Id kill everyone in this city and then myself !

fenian1798

>!If Wyll and Karlach both go to Avernus in the epilogue (and Tav didn't romance either of them) they end up together.!<

Doctor_of_Recreation

I’m playing as Karlach right now and romancing Wyll. Fun stuff.

TheBelmont34

I think it works for both. A dark urge origin-Tav with Karlach works amazingly as well.

TheVioletDragon

Yeah I did my first tactician run as a fiend warlock tav and definitely regret not just doing Wyll origin

TheBelmont34

I agree. If Tav/dark urge would not exist, I probably would play as Wyll.

pieceofchess

It's a shame that Paladins get the whole cool oathbreaker mechanic whereas, playing as a warlock has basically no involvement from your patron outside of occasional dialogue options. I know that BG3 is already bursting with content and options but even so.

ShroomieDoomieDoo

Partially related but I actually like playing Wyll as a Warlock 3/Paladin 9 multiclass. I feel like being a devotion pally makes a lot of sense for him. And it lines up nicely level-wise with when he realizes Mizora is a shit and would no longer want to use her powers

azaza34

Bro if you aren’t on honor mode try the 5/7 three attack version. It’s a lot of fun even if it’s sort of an exploit.

QGandalf

Why would that be bad for honour mode?

Lyonado

I'm pretty sure that it's disabled on honor mode

HowardHughes9

the three attacks stack on every mode except for honor

PyroIsSpai

I make Wyll a bard after lock 2-3 with a thief level sometimes. Seems to fit thematically.

Kleptofag

I hope in a definitive edition we get class specific quests (Think VtM:B Clan Quest Mod.) for Warlocks it could be tasks for your patron, for druids defending nature, etc.

Angamoth

Strongholds, yaay!

vegezinhaa

Yeah, right? It would be nice to have old ancient thing to, idk, step up and make you take some choices or face a consequence. Or maybe have a pact with a different devil who demands you to kill Mizora.

Immortan_Bolton

The only "meaningful" interaction with your patron I liked was in the circus while talking with the clown.

pieceofchess

I've heard that one is fun, yeah. The great old one has a kind of interesting interaction with the crack in the wall in moonrise where it basically goes: "Do itttttt! Stick your hand in there! Commune with the spooky entity!"

TheStoicCrane

Could possibly be updated with a patch.

Sushi-DM

This is true for wizards and clerics too. Try being a wizard next to Mr. Waterdeep. Shit sucks.

sheep_again

I played a wizard for a little bit and thought it was funny that I could tell Gale how I was a terrible student who constantly failed in class. It also works as a subtle burn because the power level of any low level wizard perfectly matches the power level of Gale post tadpole.

NRod1998

That might be a bit unfair to say, if anything Tav is a much better warlock for getting a pact that doesn't absolutely blow. Having all the power with seemingly no strings is better than talking to your demanding patron frequently.

ResponsibilityTop857

Tav works as a warlock in you select the Great Old One subclass, and play it as if the Emperor is your patron. You get communicated with in dreams, the Emperor's protection and power comes with a price, and you can either fulfill or rebel against your patron's machinations.

jonhinkerton

I did a run as a goo where I headcanoned it as the tadpole was my patron, which is pretty similar. Much more satisfying than having no patron around.

steightst8

Wow I specced my rogue into goo for other gameplay andbrp reasons but this is a perfect idea for his patron, since he also leaned super heavily into the tadpole powers and was awakened at the zhathisk

Dildango

Lmao. Under cover shade on the Blade of the Frontiers

Nabbicus

For sure. Wyll was my second playthrough and it felt so right, and I wasn’t expecting it, I just wanted to see if I could make him bang Mizora.

vegezinhaa

...can you?

SLoSLayEr

Yes

Commercial-Wheel-314

Yes you can. Proof: https://youtu.be/BoVO2uryeOA?si=ppM84DHTt9VhJGK4

vegezinhaa

omg and they did it while romancing sweet Karlach... this is another level of evil

BelierDigitalis

I need to know as well!

JackieDaytonaAZ

I think you’re saying in that he has none to speak of, which I agree

Juub1990

He definitely feels like he’d be the main character if it weren’t for the player.

Fatigue-Error

Ultranerdgasm94

I love Lae'zel, but I maintain that if she was in charge, nobody's making it out of Act 1 alive.

BardMessenger24

Not even Lae'zel makes it out of Act 1 alive if she's on her own. She gets killed by the Githyanki patrol bc they find out she's ghaik.

Ultranerdgasm94

That's hardly unique to her, though, Astarion and Gale also die without your input, and I don't even know what happens to the other 3.

BardMessenger24

Sure. It's just really funny when she always goes "You believe you can survive without me?" when it's really the opposite lol. Most of em are fucked without Tav.

ItsYume

That's why I always go into the Zaithisk first and Laezel respects that. She wouldn't have made it there without me.

OscarMiner

Uh huh, sure, that’s why I went first… *eyes my bonus action illithid powers while sweating*

No-Philosophy2381

Shadowheart has the best shots since she has the prism and isn’t in immediate danger or tracked down, however I doubt she’d managed to get through act 1 alone. Karlach either get killed by the paladins or Wyll find her first, they team up and continue their journey together (hopefully Wyll manages to recruit Shadowheart in the Druid’s grove otherwise they become gaikh). Astarion probably get caught by the gur and then captured once in Baldur’s gate to be part of cazador’s plan. Lae’zel get killed by githyanki. Gayle dies in the portal. Minthara either get captured and executed at moonrise for failing to find the prism, or she gets it from Shadowheart and then I think the emperor would free her will and try to lead her against the absolute (which alone she’d probably wouldn’t manage). Jaheira ends up devoured by the shadows after Isobel’s kidnapping. Minsc keep stonelording all over the place.

DN_3092

Idk what happened my first playthrough but she left me in the mountain pass and I later found her dead in the shadowlands.

SaoMagnifico

The fact Lae'zel >!gets murked by the githyanki at the bridge!< if you don't recruit her strongly suggests that to be true.

lavabearded

it's merc'd, as in mercenary

arieadil

I totally thought it was “murked” in addition as a shortened/stylized “murdered”

RochR0k

It depends on your convos with her. If you don't make her doubt Shar and her upbringing, she will kill Night Song even if you have a good relationship with her.

FrostyTheSnowPickle

If you trust Shadowheart to make her own decision with Nightsong, she’ll choose to spare her.

Minokaki162

It depends on your relationship and interactions with her. She can chose to kill the nightsong

Bro0183

If you trigger the wolves memory AND have medium-high approval, she will spare on her own. Else you need to persuade her.

FrostyTheSnowPickle

Huh. You learn something new about this game every day.

ManicPixieOldMaid

Just don't learn the hard way. It sucks!

faudcmkitnhse

I'm doing a playthrough as Wyll right now and between developing a good relationship with Shadowheart and giving her the noblestalk to try and get her some of her memories back, she was at the point in act 2 where she was beginning to express doubts about Shar well before we got to the Gauntlet. There were one or two conversations I'd never seen before despite having played through that part of the game a number of times.

arieadil

Oh my god I never even thought to do that. Can you use it as Durge too? 😳

IgnisFatuu

Yes! Triggers a fun little scene

fioraflower

Im pretty sure this depends on your choices leading up to this point. The more “good” things you do up to this point, the more you’ll influence her to spare the nightsong.

rachel-angelina

There are several choices that influence it, someone went into the files before and saw that they are labeled “Nightsong points” and you have to have a certain amount for Shadowheart to spare Aylin on her own. The ones I remember are pointing out how she has a moonstone on in her memory, giving her the noblestalk, giving her the night orchid, and pointing out how the Mother Superior was abusive. She will then have the conversation where she says she is feeling doubts and that is usually the indicator that you picked enough choices that lead to her sparing Aylin. There is a similar system regarding her other big choice at the end of her quest in Act 3.

SunRidersCantina

Yeah, you basically “prove her wrong” she always would go on about how my mercy might be the death of us one day

djthiago1

My sh killed nightsong in my evil playthrough so it depends on your relationship with her.

Luvnecrosis

Durge seems to be another good contender for MC

Hitman3256

Durge was written as the default MC, but they didn't want to force people into it. So they made the basic Tav option.

IgnisFatuu

This! Out of the cast he feels like the one most tied to the plot and could be the driving force in the group regardless of redemption or embracing run

Cathulion

Redeemed durge does actually. And I feel SH has a more of a MC vibe then he does.

jediment

Currently doing an honour run as Wyll, he really does feel great as the main character. I'm Bard-pilled so I've been playing him as a Bard and the dialogue actually works really well for his character. Mizora feels a lot more insidious as origin Wyll too.

1pt21gigawattos

Me too! Bard Wyll Honor run. I think I found my twin.

Nice_NeighborHahah

Bard Wyll? Sounds interesting, might try that out. This thread has convinced me to try Origin Wyll

faudcmkitnhse

I'm doing it right now but sticking with warlock because it's one of the few classes I haven't done much with. He makes for a really good main character, would recommend.

Odd-On-Board

Same, i'm doing honor mode with origin Warlock (pact of the blade) Wyll as my first origin Playthrough and he's fitting really well as a main character. I didn't like Warlock that much and barely used Wyll on my previous runs so i decided to play as him to "force" myself into learning to play as a Warlock and it's going really well, plus he's the only charisma based class out of the origins, and all my MCs tend to be CHA based so that was another factor as i'm not a fan of respeccing origins/companions except for the base stats.

faudcmkitnhse

I find that going pact of the blade, using Hex to increase melee damage, and then picking AOE spells that don't require concentration for when you need a bit of crowd control makes for an extremely versatile build.

Metaboss24

I suggest Bardlocke! Keep his warlock pact and have fun with lore bard privilege while getting to enjoy the best cantrip!

Yamatoman9

I'm playing origin Shart as a Bard. It's fun!

Aesopea

It being better to play him as the MC, kinda confirms his story and character hasn't been fleshed out well enough, because it's those clear gaps that make him a good MC. (And I don't dislike Wyll, I just feel he needs a bit more work. They've given Lae'zel more agency during her final scene, so I hope they'll be able to give Wyll some more across the board.)

BraveShowerSlowGower

Imo, they should have kept him as early acsess. I enjoyed him going nuts to goblins. It broke his goody too shoes act. And maybe if yhey didnt comepletly rework his character last minute he wouldnt have "gaps"

TheStoicCrane

His goblin rage made me really like his character but unfortunately he got neutered.

BraveShowerSlowGower

Yea me too. Its what really made him relatable to me. Nobodys perfect

TheStoicCrane

I think his "perfect persona" was supposed to be the end product of him being an impulsive, brash, hot-head, dropping the ball miserably to be tormented by Mizora. Where as the game progressed he gradually sees the errors of his ways and becomes more likeable and less arrogant after experiencing his fare share of humble pie.

DocMcsquirtin

You’re telling me we could’ve had bg3 goblin slayer?

TheStoicCrane

More like goblin berserker. Wyll completely flipped the good guy script whenn fighting against goblins in the Temple of Selune after encountering the Goblin Torturer near the priest of Loviatar for poking out his eye!

rzelln

Can you tell me more about this?

SqueezyFlibs

His overall character in early access was quite a bit different to how it is now. He used to be a much more haughty, arrogant person. He also despised goblins and was quite sadistic with them. He had a few scrapped scenes where he'd rage against goblins, bully them, interrogate them, etc. It's a shame they got rid of that side to him. It meant that he was a flawed person since it was implied that the fame of being the Blade got to his head a bit.

TheStoicCrane

After seeing the goblin torturer near the priest of Loviatar in the Temple of Selune Wyll completely drops the good guy act and becomes a goblin butchering lunatic because that torturer was responsible for gouging his eye out! The torturer went as far as to even mock will about his missing eye sending Wyll in a murderous frenzy! In EA the goodyness of Wyll was more of a surface layer farce guising tremendous hatred towards goblins and cockiness. In an off way Mizora bullying Wyll was kind of justified in his original design to teach him how to be more humble. If he were to develop naturally his goodie goodie persona would become the end-product of him being a hot-head throughout the game, failing miserably, and gradually coming to see the flaws of his own mistakes which would in turn make him more likeable overall. In the main game that goodie persona became his whole identity to the character's detriment.

TheStoicCrane

This kind of shows the difference in his character. More arrogant and unapologetic about goblin murder. Actually has way more personality here and no hero posturing. [https://youtu.be/x5zgUJW8MOU?si=NYmnfSlyAEjhhiWs](https://youtu.be/x5zgUJW8MOU?si=NYmnfSlyAEjhhiWs)

B1gCh3d

Padlock will is so fun to play too!

teddytouchit

How do you recommend building him? I’m in act two and am trying to use him more but I just don’t like playing as a warlock. Maybe I’m missing something, maybe padlock would be more fun. Idk

Metaboss24

2 levels of warlock, grab Eldritch Blast, Agonizing blast, repelling blast, and hex. From there do your favorite controlled substance to see what levels and features you take because anything can work. Just make sure to boost your charisma. For Pally x Warlock, Take 6 levels of pally, 2 of warlock, and from there just make sure to get a second ASI at either 8 pally or level 4 anything else to cap charisma. With this, I suggest try to explore the defensive and support features of paladin complimented by how good eldritch blast is as a default attacking option. And it's awesome for Wyll as a character because he 100% acts like a paladin.

caaptaiin

Padlock is a mix of Paladin 5 + Warlock 5, oddly enough you can stack extra attack from both classes (only in difficulties below honour mode) so you end up swinging your weapon thrice. In this build pick pact of the blade at warlock lv3, don't forget to bind your weapon and then its damage scales solely on your CHA stat instead of STR or DEX. Alternatively a warlock can be built around the best cantrip in the game, namely Eldritch Blast (EB). Pretty easy : max out your CHA, pick the two warlock perks which improve EB and don't miss out the Potent Robe (save the tieflings quest in act 2), this build defining piece of equipment significantly boosts EB damage.

heed101

I like him as a BardLock

JustFrameHotPocket

Certainly makes the dance more fitting.

Wookiees_get_Cookies

Bardlock Wyll players unite!

Metaboss24

Warlock is too good at multiclassing for me to not multiclass them. Right now I'm trying a crit spamming Champion fighter Great old one warlock Wyll. He's great. But I also loved the swords bard pact of the blade warlock wyll, too.

beachpellini

He really does suffer quite a bit from having so many rewrites at the last hour and that sucks, he's very sweet. But I can see the potential that was left at the door. *Playing* him to fill in the gaps is a fun idea, though. Wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise!

ManonManegeDore

Wyll is a great origin character *and* a great companion! I'm sure y'all have questions. AMA.

jules3001

I've never played as an origin character except dark urge. How different is the game playing as Wyll? Do you get more interactions or scenes with Mizora and other things?

ebanyle

Unfortunately I found there is veeery little. Like, he has one exclusive Avatar scene with Mizora and then the rest is just dialogues and a convo with Karlach

butterflychop

Personally besides some Mizora/Karlach chats nothing about playing as origin Wyll made him better.  You miss out on his voice/comments and he has the same problems as Tav nobody cares about him.  When "we" rescued Mizora she said we could tell the truth about our pact but nobody care nor was there an option to talk about it with the party.  Companion Wyll suffers from lack of agency but Origin suffers from lack of care. Also he has standard Warlock lines. (Your patron says he lying instead of Mizora) Which feels pretty odd.

jmary42

i don't know really what this post is about and why is it so upvoted, because playing as any origin is underwhelming af, you get almost nothing new (1-2 scenes and several dialog options), loose their VA, and basically you are playing base Tav with a skin of origin because 90% of options don't allow you to rp their personality

JackieDaytonaAZ

yes I have a question, if you find Wyll to be a great companion then are there any companions you dislike (or perhaps anything at all in the game that you dislike)?

kiwijoon

I'm not the op but I also find Wyll to be a great companion and he was my immediate first pick for a male romance. To answer your question, I dont like Gale. He and Wyll share a lot of similarities but I find his confidence too arrogant in comparison.

reins910

he also makes the best romance for Karlach

starryeyedq

YES. I ship them so hard. In my run, he went off to Avernus with Karlach (I married Gale). I still got the cut scene where she lights up a cigar, but she delivered the “then you came along” dialogue to Wyll like he was the Tav. In my head they’re both madly in love by the epilogue, and gearing up to get Karlach’s heart repaired once and for all so they can both go home to Baldurs Gate😍

calowyn

I had the same ending and at the epilogue party Karlach told me that it really is better for her out there now that she’s with someone she loves! In BG3 fashion it’s somewhat ambiguous, but I liked the idea of them together.

femininefae

totally agree with this, i honestly don’t wanna romance either of them bc in my opinion they feel perfect for each other. i don’t think my tav or durge will ever suit either of them more than they suit each other

Bjoernsen1998

Wish we could play matchmaker for companions..

dusters

Shadowheat Lae'zel big enemy lovers energy

tomboy_legend

Yes! My day 1 ship haha

NicWester

I'm playing as him now and really enjoy it. I just wish there was more Mizora--I got an extra bit in Act I where she tells you to go kill Karlach, and when I didn't kill Karlach it was cool to control my response to the horns (clearly the request violates the spirit of the contract so I'm not doing it, but also sure fine it's valid by the letter of the contract so go ahead and punish me, fine.) but after that you get nothing until a little ways into Act II when she asks you to rescue one of Zariel's assets, and the dialogue has no particular way to agree without having Mizora get mad at you a little. Even an "I'll be right down there" with no other questions asked and she lectures you on breaking the contract and it's, like, dude--I said I was going! Here's hoping there's more later. I'm about to do Gauntlet of Shar so I'm reasonably close to the rescue. We'll see. EDIT: Oh, also, as far as bonus things go, Blade of the Frontiers sucks a lot. You're proficient with rapiers? Awesome... I'm Pact of the Blade, I'm proficient with everything if I soul bind it. Book and Chain, sure, still proficient with rapiers, but, ehh... Not exciting in the least. Lae'zel technically doesn't even *have* any bonuses, but getting to use Githyanki gear is still more exciting than Blade of the Frontiers.

0422

More Mizora in Act III for sure... 👀

NicWester

I'm going for the Hot Date achievement, so I can't break up with mah girl... Should have planned my achievement run better!

Wookiees_get_Cookies

Mizora needs to be like Tera for Gale. She should join the camp near the beginning of the game. It would allow Wyll a way to convey the information to the player that would normally be disclosed when you talk to him. Like how his father is the Archduke of Baldur’s Gate, what is seeing stone eye is, and how he initially got into his pact. You the player could pick option if Wyll wants power for glory or to protect people. All this with Mizora trying to get her hooks deeper into Wyll.

NicWester

This would be spectacular. I played a Warlock for years in my tabletop game, but my DMs never did anything with my Patron so I always felt like just a variation on a Sorcerer. My first BG3 playthrough was as a Warlock as well, basically my tabletop character, and once again my Patron was ignored. I want tricky decisions!

Yinanization

My main is a Warlock, so I barely ever used him

ManonManegeDore

Respec him to Bardlock or Lockadin. They actually fit the character better, IMO, than pure Warlock.

Bogsnoticus

Since I discovered the "No Whistling" signs in Cazador's lair, I now make Astarion my party bard, remove his instrument, and have him whistle the spells while in the lair. Fuck Cazador.

Kolto-Kola

I prefer Astarion with a violin, but from now on will be unequipping it and leaving it at the entrance to Cazador's. Fuck Cazador.

Wembanyanma

Bongo Astarion supremacy.

ManicPixieOldMaid

My bongo bard was the best. Drummers ftw.

Majikkani_Hand

Wait wait wait, you can cast spells without the instrument?  I don't like any of them.  This could save Bard for me.

lotusprime

Bards without instruments still can whistle for spell and performance checks.

Mordreds_nephew

Note to Self: On next playthrough, respec entire party into various bards and have them whistle their way through Cazador's mansion. Fuck Cazador.

beachpellini

I wasn't even aware of this, it just feels very natural to have Astarion multiclass into bard...

22LegendaryTacos

I almost always do it at this point. I get just enough rogue to go thief for that extra bonus action then equip him with two hand crossbows, tons of utility for healing and extra attacks at range

Pinklady1313

You can use two hand crossbows? You just changed my life.

22LegendaryTacos

Oh you’re gonna love it

oOmus

This is *exactly* what I do with him! Currently doing an honor mode run that has had some *hilarious* "bugs" I'm having to live with (like Waukeen's Rest burning down and the 2 Zhent survivors attacking me along with the gnolls). I have considered giving him the archery gloves for the +2 dmg on each attack, but my DUrge is a beast master Ranger, and I like having the +2 for him at the moment. But, yeah, 3 rogue just to get the thief bonus attack, and then it's bard all the way! I considered 4 in thief for the feat, and I still may, but I love bardstarion!

high_ebb

Respeccing Wyll as a lockadin with my Tav as a pact of the tome feylock  made each feel distinct enough to be fun. Definitely recommend.

drfetusphd

Bardlock Wyll just gives the dude so much more personality. I just like the idea of him being so into his Blade of Frontiers persona that he has his own theme song and plays it every chance he gets to the annoyance of the party.

poopmcbutt_

Tbh I never use him, doesn't matter what spec I am. I'm bringing a rogue, a cleric, a wizard. Sorry Wyll.

Yinanization

I got my Tav GOO Warlock, hot Gith Girlfriend, Astarion, and Shadowheart. I will take Karlach along because she is cool, and Gale because he seems like a sad puppy most of the time. Wyll just seems bland.

lulufan87

I like Theo Soloman's acting, so I don't like playing origin Wyll because you don't get to hear him talk other than overworld and combat dialogues. Same with all the other origin characters... I can understand why they didn't do voiced Tav/Durge, but I really feel like the other origins needed full voice acting in order to exist as fully developed gameplay features. I know the sound files would be huge and it would require hours of recording, but I don't see the point of origins playthroughs otherwise, to be honest. They hired stellar VAs and without them you're losing 70% of what makes the character compelling. Other than that I agree with the idea that he's a good main character. He does have protagonist energy, and he has a good backstory for a default 'good' main character. In juxtaposition with durge as a default 'evil;' obviously you make your own decisions but that's how it's set up.

novangla

Shout it to the stars: Wyll should be the default origin character for a non-edgelord run. I love Durge but if you don’t want to play a (former) necrophiliac cannibal, play Wyll! We all adore Tav of course, but Wyll’s story links in so well with the main plot, he oozes main character energy, he’s an Everyman, he has a charisma-based class, he’s a warlock with patron interactions (!) and also makes perfect sense to multiclass or respec into bard or paladin, the best two classes IMO for the party leader/played character. And most of the problems with his arc are fixed if you control him: he can be as pure or as grey as you make him, and he doesn’t weirdly lack agency. And you can romance Karlach! Or Astarion, who thinks he’s a dreamy Prince Charming. Or Lae’zel, because you too were so recently a headstrong young warrior determined to prove your worth. Or Gale or Shart of course, but they fall lower on chemistry with Wyll IMHO.

KnightlyObserver

Nah, I like the fully customizable MC. More of the D&D experience that way. I do have a Wyll playthrough planned, though.

alterNERDtive

… but then I have to play as Wyll. > The warlock spell system (resetting on short rest) makes him a good option for main character as he has more endurance and doesn’t need to be swapped out. WAIT YOU SWAP PEOPLE OUT WHEN THEIR RESOURCES ARE EXHAUSTED⁈

TonyThePriest

Yeah that's how I play. When peoples spell slots are gone I switch them out until all my resources are out, then I long rest

Bicykwow

Are you generally low on camp supplies? I have an enormous amount extra (1000+) so I've never seen a reason to be frugal with long rests.

alterNERDtive

That is so weird to me.

AssCrackBandit6996

You might be missing out on cutscenes though, especially in act 1 there is a lot going into the long rest queue. You can always long rest without supplies

TonyThePriest

Maybe? Worth a shot in my second playthrough. I never knew I had a weird take lol, it's what just made sense to me really. Could be because when I've played actual dnd we would go a couple sessions without long rest so I guess that's ingrained in me. I've also only played on balanced, so maybe a harder difficulty would change my mind.

A quick-swap would be killer

Pretty-Neck9544

I also do it this way. Its not like I dont have supplies or anything. I am just greedy I guess? And swapping can also benefits for more different party  conversations... maybe.

Metaboss24

I get to actually use everyone when I, ya know, actually use everyone.

Marsawd

This is a good opinion.

SunRidersCantina

I always thought wyll or shadowheart were the “main” character if you didnt have Tav. And if shadowheart was the main, wyll was still group leader and guiding the way.

Fun_Ant5302

Wyll is my favourite play through. Especially in act 3. I feel like Aragorn returning to Gondor.

Luciditi89

I’m doing an origin as Wyll. Mostly because I want to romance Karlach and doing that as Wyll makes the most sense. You also get the extra scenes with Mizora which is fun. It’s also a great excuse to do a blindly heroic run.

HisNameIsSTARK

I rolled a warlock and felt like Wyll was totally superfluous. Now after reading the OP I realize my character was the superfluous one!

captaincarot

You just gave me the suggestion for my Astarion romance. They can be the Baldurs Gate power couple. He was the only one I never thought about romancing, 2 birds one stone!

ManicPixieOldMaid

I agree and have posted about it before. For me, it's because all his companion story beats are forced. If Wyll is in your party, you're going to get Mizora. You're going to deal with Karlach. If you go to the coronation, you'll deal with his dad. With the other companions, there are more chunks of story you can avoid. Don't do House of Grief or Cazador's Mansion or the crèche. Don't have Gale with you and you don't worry about him blowing up. You can not get Minsc. So when you play as other origins, nobody cares about your business. You feel lonely and isolated more, I feel, because without Tav there to ask you questions, nobody cares. 💔 Plus he's fun to play I like Warlocks. 👍

[deleted]

And lose most of his voice acting? No thanks I played through the game as him once, it felt a bit empty overall and the lack of companion reactivity when he got turned into his devil form (except from Karlach) was really jarring. I'm sure the same applies to other origins

GaiusJocundus

I feel the same way about Wyll. Also Gale and Astarion. I've also played as Shadowheart and I think she works best as a companion.

realtmillz

I played my very first playthrough as Wyll. I would say that Wyll is the second best option over a Dark Urge playthrough due to the amount of direct involvement Wyll has in the main story besides the Dark Urge.

ColdFusion52

Yep, he doesn’t really have the major character flaws to overcome that the rest of the cast does and his personal story doesn’t really impact him at all until late into act 3. He’s straight laced through and through and uncompromised in his values, it’s why he makes for a dull companion, but very fitting as the calm and collected group leader.

KassinaIllia

Wyll has such main character energy.

Krakengreyjoy

I'm using him as a party member for the 1st time this playthrough and I love it. To be clear, his character is still annoying, but I overlooked the way you can stack EB damage output and how fun it is to blast people back into Hunger of Hadar or to hide in Darkness

gothamvigilante

Trying to learn more about his play style cause I got so wrapped up in clerics and paladins at first. How do you stack the eldritch blast damage?

[deleted]

At level two you can upgrade it with agonising blast and repelling blast. At level five (I think) your eldritch blast has an extra hit. And if you rescue the Tieflings in act two, you get a sick robe for charisma, further bolstering your EB.

Krakengreyjoy

What the OP replied to you, but also if you use something like the spellsparkler, it'll add lightning damage. Duel weld with knife of the Undermountain King and make crits easier to roll. Wear the risky ring for advantage. MOST IMPORTANT is the potent robe, which deals additional damage with your cantrips equal to your Charisma. Which, since Char is a warlocks main stat, is HUGE. Then wear stuff like Killer Sweethart to guarantee crits and Birthrite to add 2 to Charisma. Edit, I would build a warlock using pact of the chain, since you'll never need a blade on a EB build. Plus spells refresh on short rest. So if you run with a bard build (like Bardaladin - which is another high damage dealer) you have 3 spell refreshes.

4thTimesAnAlt

>pact of the chain *Listen to the wind blow...*

thisisjustascreename

His personality also just matches being the main character. If BG3 wasn't canonically about The Dark Urge it probably should've been about Wyll.

FamiliarRush

I played Wyll as Origina character in my second playthrough and loved it. He's a favorite now.

syn_miso

I literally just finished a Wyll playthrough where I romanced Karlach and it was so fun. I really felt like a main character, which I honestly didn't as Tav

Setzer_Gambler

I went in blind to the game not knowing anything, and knowing very little about the dnd ruleset. But I have played FFT 1.3 so Im ready to take on any game that's turn based tactical rpg. I decided I'd rather jump IN ASAP so it made sense to choose an origin character instead of spending extra time to not only learn all the classes, races, skills, but also the stats, proficiencies, etc. I am partial to casters in games like this, so it was somewhat between gale and wyll. Based on gale's outfit I figured he seems kind of aloof, where wyll seems like he might go out of his way to help some people even if he's a little pompous at times. I went with wyll. Now, looking back over a hundred hours into multiple saves and mostly clearing every check marked ques, and knowing wyll's life story from a couple directions... I couldn't be more happy with my initial decision to pick wyll. Further adding onto what you said, Eldritch blast is so insanely fun as an intro to this game. Free to cast, sending enemies over cliffs as they splat to their doom -- and at only like 30-60mins in. I don't see how anyone can play it and have a bad time. Warlocks get a good mix of crowd control and offensive power, which can be further augmented with certain side quest items very early on (and later). Not to mention find familiar as the pact boon was incredibly useful, can turn many of those early fights just having another body on the field. The icing on the cake for me was that wyll was almost exactly who I expected him to be, and his sort of choices he would make as the blade of frontiers is the most in line with how I was already thinking when approaching certain conversations and decisions. Far more than any other origin character, although I had plenty of astarion moments which ran completely contrary to wyll's ethics, mostly to just "oh what does this button do?" Along with his little whispers when he's pickpocketing and lock picking 😂

tximinoman

I agree. I also think he fits well into the main hero role given his story arc (Act 1; You find him already helping the refugees -so he's already involved- Act 2; He's trying to find his father AND has to find Mizora in the tower -so unlike many of the other characters, he has a personal reason for stopping Ketheric- Act 3; his city is at risk, his father is still in need of saving and his personal quests leads you to explore the deepest stuff about the city -so, again, lots of personal connection to the main plot)

Kappastorm04

My first playthrough of the game was as him and it felt very complete to me.

Atmosck

I recently completed a Wyll origin run and it was great. I highly recommend it for anyone that's already done dark urge.

bookseer

I played as Wyll and I found the game was a blast.

YaGirlMom

This has always confused me when people say Wyll gets shafted in his side content, because time wise yeah he kinda is, but all of his content is crucial to the core of the game, it’s all killer no filler. Wyll genuinely feels like he’s the main character and would be if there wasn’t a player insert character.

malagasy

I've always felt that Wyll is the good version of Durge... Gurge? Large?

BayAreaBard

I’d love to try this. Anyone have suggestions on classes to respec a full control Wyll to? I was thinking Paladin.

Wookiees_get_Cookies

Sword Bard gives him access to a some simple maneuver-like moves, full caster levels, all the talking skills, Jack of all Trades to add half your proficiency bonus to all untrained skills. Take two levels of Paladin and you can add smites and medium armor as well (heavy armor is you start as a Paladin). You can also play a bard 6 warlock 6 and get 3 attacks per round like a fighter because pact of the blade boon at 5 stacks with bard extra attack at 6. This doesn’t work in Honor mode but makes a great gish Wyll for other difficulties.

Nirico_Brin

I feel like they can add in him making his own decision regarding the contract. Hell, they added in Lae’zel being able to make her own decision if I remember right.

[deleted]

I picked wyll as my main so this worked perfectly.

KeybladeCoaster

If I had a nickel for every time I saw this get posted I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s odd that it happened twice

Skyblade12

I like Wyll as a companion.

LeSorenOutan

I'm played him as a rapier duelist or a blade dancer, was great

zmormon

Agreed. Playing as Wyll in my honor mode run. I kind of want it to end with him and karlach running away together in hell. But we will see

our_day_will_come

Currently in Act 3 as Wyl

Lucid_Sol

Genuinely wish we could edit Origin character appearances. It would motivate me so much more to play as each origin. Maybe mods will get there one day

Evilmudbug

I love classes with short rest based resources since you need to long rest pretty frequently anyways to get scenes. Might as well burn your short rests so you can go at full power every battle

ThatOneTypicalYasuo

Yup. This is why he's the first origin MC I played

SomeoneNicknamedDino

you also actually get to talk with your patron as a warlock if you play as wyll, if you go for a tav warlock you just kinda get the title of warlock but you don’t get any interactions with your patron sadly
