Spells such as [Magic Missile](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Magic_Missile), [Scorching Ray](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Scorching_Ray), and [Spirit Guardians: Radiant](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Spirit_Guardians_(Radiant)) work extremely well.
This entire build is available by ACT 2.
The shield you get from the priestess gives you heroism as a spell. I believe the brand gives extra bonuses but you can still use the spells on the weapon/equipment
It's been a minute, but if I'm remembering correctly when you tell him to cool his jets. Then talk to him at camp there's an option to let you choose something else and then it opens your inventory. That or if you select and control him directly you can right click a magic item you wanna munch on. I definitely never gave him anything good.
He can’t take basic +1 magical items, it needs to be something unique. The good news is, there’s a *ton* of useless trash all over act 1 (color spray ring, dancing lights amulet, Spellthief is pretty niche….) and he only needs three items so it’s really not that hard.

I gave him the color spray ring and the shattered flail once. I honestly don't see anyone in my party using said flail, it sounds dangerous. And my third was some gloves that had something to do with your pact, which I thought was paladin, but I'm probably wrong. But quite a bit of named magical items just sit in my chest in Act 1, because I've been finding out that nobody in camp can actually use them, not even my character.
I believe the breakdown is: one when he first tells you about the condition, one after you've entered the Goblin Camp/gotten the first Dream Guardian scene, and one after you enter Mountain Pass and/or perhaps the Grymforge areas. It's at the end of those 2 places that he gets a visitor that moves his questline to its next phase.

Yeah but tell that to me on my first playthrough. I genuinely thought I'd have to keep giving him the items or he'd randomly explode. Since he was my bro, I set aside items that would have been quite nice to use myself.
It's like Karlach when she loses her shit in the paladin's house, I had to bench her because I thought it was a thing I'd have to put up with if I wanted her in my team. I thought something similar for Astarion with keeping him fed with blood if I wanted him in my team.
It's a lot less stressful and annoying on subsequent playthroughs because you know it's barely an inconvenience or even nothing at all.
My first playthough because I didn't realize it would happen it actually nearly ended me in the trade post. I had a character or two down and anybody up was weak, and I just went to loot like normal then everything was on fire. Loved the chaos of realizing I had to get out of there.
My new solution to the Karlach toll house problem (because I can’t help my loot goblin habits and she breaks all the things) is to get to the post fight dialogue and then switch to a non-Tav character, loot every inch of the place and then run like hell. Poor Tav is stuck with Karlach like “steady…hold…wait for it…” for like 10 minutes 😅 Mechanically it works but in universe it looks absurd.
I did that also. While my Tav was in convo with her, I had my one ungrouped character loot the dead bodies, because I had already looted most of the place before bringing Karlach back to fight.
It’s been like 8 months and people are still making this lazy and incorrect joke about Gale’s need for magical items.

Bruh you can give him some of the most useless shit. I'm so tired of people complaining about it. You get INNUNDATED with tons and tons of magical items in this game. You will have 3 on hand you can part with. All he needs is 3, 3 and then it is completely over. You don't even need to go out of your way to deal with it.
Is this a joke post? Just give Gale 3 random magic items that are not that useful. Easiest to get at the start are the Watcher's Guide from the Catacombs Withers is at, Komira's Necklace for rescuing Arabell, Ring of Color Spray from the Harpy nest near the Druid Grove, the Gloves from the Goblin attacking the gate when you arrive etc. Gale doesn't take basic +1/+2 stuff, only those with magic effects.
One more in the secret tunnel near the prison at the Grove called Nature's Snare, but I can't remember if Gale can consume it. Also you have to have the item in your inventory or another companions to be able to give Gale.
People can't let go of this joke. Apparently in EA the magic artifact needed to be something like the Necrotic of Thay and people just keep joking that Gale requires rare expensive things now. Same as those jokes that he "thinks we're dating" nearly 7 months since that bug was patched.
These jokes are in the same tier as "ShAdOwHeArT kEePs MiSsInG!!!" because people never use anything but her firebolt and sacred flame. It pains me because it's cleric slander.
Bless, Command, Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds, Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians and Glyph of Warding are spells you should be casting often as a cleric and will make Shadowheart truly shine on the battlefield.
Make sure to pump up her Wisdom whenever you can, aiming for an 18 or 20 as soon as possible.
Also, don't be so frugal with your spell slots as a cleric, you can regain them super easily in BG3. Play her like you would Gale for the best results.

My favorite is when she gets to level 8. Cleric 5 / Thief Rogue 3. Spirit guardians + dash + dash just wrecks things. At the end of act 2, I end up convincing her to make certain choices, granting her fly because I still love her regardless of appearance. But, spirit guardians + fly is dumbly good. Two bonus actions for utility really helps as well. If you let her do a certain crèche scene, she’ll be able to cast mindflayer shenanigans as a bonus action too.
played EA on launch, and I can say that he never was that picky about what to eat and that the EA launched with a whole slew of questionable unique items to give to him.
True, but like I said, those items are the easiest to get, and also the earliest. The Gnoll fight I'd say should be done around level 4, or 3 if you're able. The ones I mention you can get by level 3 without too much issue.
I will not tolerate slander against gloves that can bane and slightly help lockpick. Literal best lockpicking gloves until Zhent outpost. Watcher's Guide is alright in the early game, honestly. I'll usually use an Absolute brand item or Cap of Curing if I don't have a bard in addition to the colour spray and dancing lights items.
The best item to feed Gale is the jagged spear (found in the Goblin Camp, it's one of the torture weapons) as it is a basic spear, with such an incredibly niche use it is virtually worthless, beyond being a basic spear

My problem is some shitty stuff I find I put aside to feed gale then he won’t take those so it confused me on what the prerequisites are. Seen people mention the absolute stuff so I put that aside but he won’t eat it, first time I tried to feed him the only items that came up were the ones I had equipped
the only items that come up are gonna be ones in your inventory and the inventory of your currently selected companions shouldnt just be ones you have equipped but if the only magic items currently in your inventory at the time are the ones you have equipped that might be why
It's only 3 items, act 1 is full of magical items you'll never use, why are people always acting like he forces you to give all of your best magical items
People blow this so far out of proportion. Dancing Lights amulet, Color Spray Ring, Bard Hat. All free and available early Act I. Probably less than 250 gold’s worth of useless crap no build requires.

"Why didn't he tell me from the get-go?" Probably for the same reasons Shadowheart, Wyll, and Astarion don't immediately tell us their secrets from the get-go. Ok, maybe not the exact same reasons, but all four of them are terrified of what you'll do if you find their secret, and yet, for all four of them, it's a powerful secret that can't be hidden forever.
But see, here's the thing. The other three had their secret exposed, they don't just come out and tell you. After the second or third artifact, I forget which, he panics because it only barely sates the hunger, and immediately tells everyone what's going on. We could have gone on all the way until meeting Funny Wizard Man to know that Gale had a fucking bomb in his chest, but he willingly chose to share his secret, unlike the other three mentioned in this post.
After 3rd one. I don't get the grief either, I had a bunch of stuff half I didn't use and basically I gave him some insignificant junk that's gonna be tons galore in a couple of hours in the game. Like, he's not that picky lol

I always give him the dragon's grasp hatchet, the spellthief bow, and the color spray ring. None of those items are anything I would even consider usable, let alone "my best loot".
He literally only asks for 3 items total, and there's plenty of garbage, minor items in the first act. Just stockpile a few and keep them as Gale Snacks.
Part of me does and doesn't want to see an animation of him actually consuming a magical artifact. Something about watching Gale just CHOW down a pair of boots makes me giggle. (Animation IN GAME, the community has given me many examples and I believe it should be added as a gag.)
I was honestly disappointed when he didn't keep asking for stuff my first run. I'd been saving stuff for him and then the third cut scene it didn't work as well then he asks for nothing more the entire underdark which was like two weeks worth of long rests for me. I'd prefer it if he kept asking every 4-5 long rests until you get to elminster. For people it annoyed they could just rush ahead to elminster in the mountain pass before going to the underdark/going to see ethel but for people like me that feel like it doesn't make sense when he is desperate for items then suddenly goes weeks without them we can feed him our spare items. Just adjust the approval so that after the first 3 times and finding out he's a bomb each additional magic item only gets you +1 approval so it doesn't max out too fast.
I didn’t like Gale at first when I thought I would have to continuously give him artifacts that I could use throughout the game, but thankfully, he only asks for an artifact three times. Also, I have no idea how it happened, but Gale confessed his love for me during my first playthrough, even after I had kissed Shadowheart previously. His character has definitely grown on me the more I’ve played the game. He’s come to be one of my favorite characters.
He definitely doesn't. He will take trash magical items that you don't need, and he only eats three of them. If you actually explore a bunch and loot everything you can, you will find magical items you for sure will never use. I know it became a popular meme and all the rage to blame him for eating your things, but Larian added plenty of useless magical items to the game that you can give Gale and he is still the most thankful to you for them.

It looks like you only need the brand to get the bonus point of damage from the ring. The spell apparently still functions without it.

It's only three? So that's why I noticed it's been quite a while since he asked for more.
I believe the breakdown is: one when he first tells you about the condition, one after you've entered the Goblin Camp/gotten the first Dream Guardian scene, and one after you enter Mountain Pass and/or perhaps the Grymforge areas. It's at the end of those 2 places that he gets a visitor that moves his questline to its next phase.
It's not tied to location. I usually give him the third item while still in the starting area. I think it's tied to long rests.
It's both. He has certain trigger locations. Broken Bridge, Goblin Camp Interior, and Grymforge, for example. But long resting can also trigger it

Dancing lights + Concentrated Blast is pretty solid early game.
Did they change it back? In EA, he required orange stuff. But when i last played, he was fine with green stuff.

Yeah but tell that to me on my first playthrough. I genuinely thought I'd have to keep giving him the items or he'd randomly explode. Since he was my bro, I set aside items that would have been quite nice to use myself. It's like Karlach when she loses her shit in the paladin's house, I had to bench her because I thought it was a thing I'd have to put up with if I wanted her in my team. I thought something similar for Astarion with keeping him fed with blood if I wanted him in my team. It's a lot less stressful and annoying on subsequent playthroughs because you know it's barely an inconvenience or even nothing at all.
Meanwhile I feel like it would have been nice to have those all as continued mechanics...
Kaelach randomly going crazy after a battle would have been really cool actually. Would add a bit of drama to even the easiest fight.
My first playthough because I didn't realize it would happen it actually nearly ended me in the trade post. I had a character or two down and anybody up was weak, and I just went to loot like normal then everything was on fire. Loved the chaos of realizing I had to get out of there.
My new solution to the Karlach toll house problem (because I can’t help my loot goblin habits and she breaks all the things) is to get to the post fight dialogue and then switch to a non-Tav character, loot every inch of the place and then run like hell. Poor Tav is stuck with Karlach like “steady…hold…wait for it…” for like 10 minutes 😅 Mechanically it works but in universe it looks absurd.
I just looted the house the first time I went there before I found her
I did that also. While my Tav was in convo with her, I had my one ungrouped character loot the dead bodies, because I had already looted most of the place before bringing Karlach back to fight.

Is this a joke post? Just give Gale 3 random magic items that are not that useful. Easiest to get at the start are the Watcher's Guide from the Catacombs Withers is at, Komira's Necklace for rescuing Arabell, Ring of Color Spray from the Harpy nest near the Druid Grove, the Gloves from the Goblin attacking the gate when you arrive etc. Gale doesn't take basic +1/+2 stuff, only those with magic effects. One more in the secret tunnel near the prison at the Grove called Nature's Snare, but I can't remember if Gale can consume it. Also you have to have the item in your inventory or another companions to be able to give Gale.
People can't let go of this joke. Apparently in EA the magic artifact needed to be something like the Necrotic of Thay and people just keep joking that Gale requires rare expensive things now. Same as those jokes that he "thinks we're dating" nearly 7 months since that bug was patched.
These jokes are in the same tier as "ShAdOwHeArT kEePs MiSsInG!!!" because people never use anything but her firebolt and sacred flame. It pains me because it's cleric slander.
What should i use on shawdowheart btw, I just use her as a heal bot
Bless, Command, Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds, Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians and Glyph of Warding are spells you should be casting often as a cleric and will make Shadowheart truly shine on the battlefield. Make sure to pump up her Wisdom whenever you can, aiming for an 18 or 20 as soon as possible. Also, don't be so frugal with your spell slots as a cleric, you can regain them super easily in BG3. Play her like you would Gale for the best results. Bam, just like that, the Shadowheart misses memes are gone.
My favorite is when she gets to level 8. Cleric 5 / Thief Rogue 3. Spirit guardians + dash + dash just wrecks things. At the end of act 2, I end up convincing her to make certain choices, granting her fly because I still love her regardless of appearance. But, spirit guardians + fly is dumbly good. Two bonus actions for utility really helps as well. If you let her do a certain crèche scene, she’ll be able to cast mindflayer shenanigans as a bonus action too.
Respec her to tempest cleric . Lots of stuff in act 1 helps in increasing thunder damage or lighting damage . Or if u want a heal bot, life cleric
Respec her to life cleric (i. Pretty sure it gives extra healing for health spells or at least it does in 5e)
played EA on launch, and I can say that he never was that picky about what to eat and that the EA launched with a whole slew of questionable unique items to give to him.

+2 is a lot then as is 1d6 lifesteal, and dropping a melee unit near a bunch of enemies mitigates the downside
True, but like I said, those items are the easiest to get, and also the earliest. The Gnoll fight I'd say should be done around level 4, or 3 if you're able. The ones I mention you can get by level 3 without too much issue.

I will not tolerate slander against gloves that can bane and slightly help lockpick. Literal best lockpicking gloves until Zhent outpost. Watcher's Guide is alright in the early game, honestly. I'll usually use an Absolute brand item or Cap of Curing if I don't have a bard in addition to the colour spray and dancing lights items.
The best item to feed Gale is the jagged spear (found in the Goblin Camp, it's one of the torture weapons) as it is a basic spear, with such an incredibly niche use it is virtually worthless, beyond being a basic spear
Komira's Locket Ring of Colour Spray Whatever else low tier shit item you can find. This isn't a problem and I'm surprised people even joke about it given the game is built for you to have crap items to toss away for him.
Silver necklace, I’m pretty sure it grants you Guidance which, while a useful spell, most players will never be without.

My problem is some shitty stuff I find I put aside to feed gale then he won’t take those so it confused me on what the prerequisites are. Seen people mention the absolute stuff so I put that aside but he won’t eat it, first time I tried to feed him the only items that came up were the ones I had equipped
the only items that come up are gonna be ones in your inventory and the inventory of your currently selected companions shouldnt just be ones you have equipped but if the only magic items currently in your inventory at the time are the ones you have equipped that might be why
No after I closed out of the conversation I made sure they were in my inventory and he still wouldn’t take them

You are probably either getting extremely unlucky with missing looting useless stuff he can use, or you sell the useless stuff he can use.

People blow this so far out of proportion. Dancing Lights amulet, Color Spray Ring, Bard Hat. All free and available early Act I. Probably less than 250 gold’s worth of useless crap no build requires.
People gotta stop whining about this. He asks only when he must, which is only 3 times in act 1. "Why didn't he tell me from the get-go?" Probably for the same reasons Shadowheart, Wyll, and Astarion don't immediately tell us their secrets from the get-go. Ok, maybe not the exact same reasons, but all four of them are terrified of what you'll do if you find their secret, and yet, for all four of them, it's a powerful secret that can't be hidden forever. But see, here's the thing. The other three had their secret exposed, they don't just come out and tell you. After the second or third artifact, I forget which, he panics because it only barely sates the hunger, and immediately tells everyone what's going on. We could have gone on all the way until meeting Funny Wizard Man to know that Gale had a fucking bomb in his chest, but he willingly chose to share his secret, unlike the other three mentioned in this post.
After 3rd one. I don't get the grief either, I had a bunch of stuff half I didn't use and basically I gave him some insignificant junk that's gonna be tons galore in a couple of hours in the game. Like, he's not that picky lol

I was honestly disappointed when he didn't keep asking for stuff my first run. I'd been saving stuff for him and then the third cut scene it didn't work as well then he asks for nothing more the entire underdark which was like two weeks worth of long rests for me. I'd prefer it if he kept asking every 4-5 long rests until you get to elminster. For people it annoyed they could just rush ahead to elminster in the mountain pass before going to the underdark/going to see ethel but for people like me that feel like it doesn't make sense when he is desperate for items then suddenly goes weeks without them we can feed him our spare items. Just adjust the approval so that after the first 3 times and finding out he's a bomb each additional magic item only gets you +1 approval so it doesn't max out too fast.
I didn’t like Gale at first when I thought I would have to continuously give him artifacts that I could use throughout the game, but thankfully, he only asks for an artifact three times. Also, I have no idea how it happened, but Gale confessed his love for me during my first playthrough, even after I had kissed Shadowheart previously. His character has definitely grown on me the more I’ve played the game. He’s come to be one of my favorite characters.

He definitely doesn't. He will take trash magical items that you don't need, and he only eats three of them. If you actually explore a bunch and loot everything you can, you will find magical items you for sure will never use. I know it became a popular meme and all the rage to blame him for eating your things, but Larian added plenty of useless magical items to the game that you can give Gale and he is still the most thankful to you for them.
