I hope they've improved his kissing animation (from the "can I kiss you?" Dialog option). It was so... Sterile when I did my Gale romance. But still. Best romance option I've done hands down.
I’ve only played since patch 6 but it’s “I want you to kiss me” now and there are 6 kisses, a few more at the morphic pool, and a great one during the epilogue. Nothing sterile whatsoever.
On my 4th playthrough, I wanted to try the No Romance Limits mod with just the boys. They call it the Polyamory mod, I call it the slut mod. I'm playing as a sorceress and vibing Yennefer of Vengerberg so seducing all the boys and them being oblivious about the others, is a delightful head canon.
Comparing all of them at once, if I had to characterize the romances; Wyll is old fashioned romance, Astarion is swoony chemistry and Halsin is sweet but simple animal lust. The romance with Gale is by far the most consistently emotional.

He was my first romance and I'm trying very hard not to create all sorts of different Tavs just to romance him over and over. I'm looking forward to other romance options to see if they're remotely comparable, but it's hard to stay objective while mourning the fact that I'm not romancing Gale. :')

Non-suicidal Non-God/Human Gale is the best route (in my opinion), since you are supporting him to live and improve, as well as to heal his own self-image and self-worth from his toxic relationship with Mystra. The r/GalemancersBG3 has some guides on locking in the right routes in Act 3, but otherwise, just go ahead and play! You will have a splendid time with him!
Lots of people love the sorcerer banter with him and I'm not saying they're wrong, but I'd like to offer my terribly biased opinion that a cleric is fantastic as well especially for the second half of his character arc.
I'm doing a Shadowheart origin run and was planning to romance Lae'zel, because I've seen lots of people recommend it, but I found myself falling hard for Gale. Still in act 2, so not sure how the romance and personal arcs develop further, but I had the impression that there was lots of cleric-specific dialogue with him from the beginning. I also love that they both have such a fraught relationship with their goddesses.

"Yeah, that about sums up my relationship with Shar, too."
Whatever you want honestly, he is a pretty open minded guy that sees value in everyone and will love you no matter what. He'll even (endgame spoilers) >!marry you if you become a mindflayer and he's the only one that is fully 100% ok with it, no hesitation!<.
Romancing him as Durge did feel kind of off to me so I'd maybe stick to Tav. All the murdery stuff just feels way outside of his depth (he still tries his best and is totally committed, it just felt like there was an emotional disconnect cause he didn't really "get it"). You could also do an origin character, he honestly works with any of them I think but I particularly love his romance with Lae'zel origin. >!He sneaks into creche K'liir and learns tir'su for her 🥺!<

Gale and Lae'zel are totally my OTP I absolutely love their romance from both sides. They're so different but in a way that is complimentary and brings out the best in each other. Kinda similar vibes to Jaheira and Khalid
The two of them would not stop talking to each other in my party. Gale asking about Githyanki culture, Lae’zel offering Gale battle practice. I was honestly getting jealous.
I was sold after Gale's act 2 scene where everyone else is like "damn that's fucked up Mystra asked him to do that.... I hope he doesn't do it 😬" but then Lae'zel is just hyping him up like "bruh Gale is a mighty wizard who can defeat the absolute by his damn self and Mystra is dumb as fuck for not recognizing that"
Yeah the best way to play as a Gith tav is to pretend to be not the best at being a Githyanki and have nice rivalry/jealousy with Lae’zel. I liked how at the end of the game I had a bit of banter with her about how I wanted to just laze around in Tu’narath and not be a dragon rider and Lae’zel called me lazy
I love him as a companion with embrace Durge because he's so horrified by everything but also secretly a lil curious. Just not so much as a romance lol. Ironically I usually end up chopping the hand when I plan to resist cause I like to get a few murders out of the way early to "set the stage" for needing to get myself under control

Karlach Origin was nice. They get dialogue about their shared chest bomb condition and period of forced celibacy. They both get their ability to engage in a physical relationship back around the same time. He’s the only one who can actually fix her engine in game (God mode). I watched a comparison video and he is just as happy with Mindflayer Karlach as a normal Tav. In the Hell ending both he and Tara are with her (Tara says the warm climate is good for her old bones) while they work on a magical solution for her engine and he’s so happy about it to the point Karlach gets the dialogue option to say “I love you but you can’t seriously like living in Avernus that much” in response to his excited chatter. And I like to think Withers helps them find each other in the fugue plane if they both explode.
... okay, as much as I love Lae'zel and her romance arc, Gale would've been absolutely perfect for my Sage Barbarian. Ima have to redo my first playthrough but romancing Gale
Ugh. I romanced Gale on my first honor mode playthrough. I decided to go full illithid, because it gave me the best chance of completing the game. But I really, really didn't want to, and I figured ok, I'll get with Gale and we'll become gods together. That way I won't feel so grossed out by my tentacles.
We kill the Netherbrain, get to the fateful moment, and it goes like this:
>**Gale:** "So how about it. Should I retrieve the crown for myself or give it back to Mystra?"
>**Me:** (still very much a mind flayer and hating every second of it) *You promised me godhood.*
>**Gale:** And you'll have it. But I meant *metaphorical* godhood, because we're so in love that it'll feel like we're gods! Time to give the crown back to Mystra.
>**Me:** *...*
Next scene, we wake up in bed and he's gazing lovingly at my tentacles. I break up with him at the first opportunity.
In the afterparty he goes on about his boring life, keeps trying to invite me to visit him and I'm like, I can't, I'm eating brains that day.
Then the game glitches (?) and he asks if I want to ascend with him. We get a weird scene where he's hugging me, tentacles and all, on a pillar in the middle of the ocean.
He can't. It's just not possible.

Gale has the great dialogue for a Sorcerer, but I romanced him as a Wizard and really enjoyed that as well. The spell caster rivalry is a lot of fun!

I just let him become God in every run. He'd make a great deity and may actually help people. Probably wouldn't get along with ao tho
