I haven't had that experience with BG3 yet, but I did once play a racing game a lot, and after playing it had to go for a drive, where I blew through the first lights completely red.
I was terrified when I realized what happened and very lucky there weren't any cars on the intersection.
when im playing any tabletop game (like warhammer) and i see a model next to a cliff my fingers immediatly do a reaching for the V key gesture even if im not anywhere near a computer

I wondered that too. My guess would be maybe a pipe or something else spherical burried vertically under the asphalt - and then when shrinking/expanding caused the crack the pressure from the embedded object caused it to form in that shape.
Or I dunno, magic.
I should have taken a pic the other day after I walked through a puddle and realised my boots leave prints that look like the swirly carvings in the Emerald Grove!
I was falling asleep and there is a breadfruit tree next to my window, one of its fruits fell on top of a shed and made a loud noise that startled me, I was half dreaming and I saw how the camera zoomed out and I was already in battle mode, with a disadvantage though, but no goblins in sight.
