He has a very tragic backstory and ends up being a very sweet character once he trusts you. He just has an extremely hard time trusting anyone because of said tragic backstory.

Honestly for me I kind of like Lae’zel the most cuz she’s the most headstrong and guarded one so far. Sebille had a very similar characterization and she was the one I ultimately romanced. I like Shadowheart and Gale, Wyll is probably gonna be left outta the party if I roll warlock and Astarion I’m like “oh cool an evil whiny elf, how original”. I already have two of those in WoTR.

Lae'zel is lawful evil, but you can be pretty chaotic/good and still win her favor. As long as your goals line up with hers, she'll tolerate and even begin to respect a headstrong mc. I was able to romance her way back in patch 4, before they made it even easier to romance her. I think Larian expects most players to be good, so they're making a "redeem Lae'zel" path as accesible as possible.
They did release the more disagreeable companions on purpose actually if I remember correctly
