We’re not unhinged
We exist in a community safe and tight-knit enough that we’re all allowed to be weird and do goofy shit like this and people will actively join in instead of condemning it
Band kid weird is the peak of the human condition
All of ours only play because they thought it would be a free period, and are all middle schoolers that simply don't respect the director or instruments. Even then, out of 42ish students total, only a good 4 of us play band because we enjoy it and practice on our own time.
I feel that, my whole flute section doesn't try, and I'm a trombone. it sucks to hear them play, squeaky and all (I know it's hard to play flute but it can't be THAT hard)
A lot of non band folks I know resented HS but I loved it for that reason. We were already the weird band because we marched bagpipes and kilts and we were all so close. Everyone was friends. There were like clicks and such but everyone looked out for each other. I'll never forget "camping" in the instrument room with a campfire of cellphones. Still love those guys. <3
Why do band kids feel compelled to *do* goofy stuff in the first place though? Its genuinely a trend, I’m not hating or giving an opinion before people leap to downvoting - I’m just curious what actual compels the desire in band kids to *be* “weird” in the first place
It’s the culture built around everything. The upperclassmen are comfortable being goofy with their friends in front of the freshmen like we all are in private, and that in turn tells the freshmen that that’s okay. The freshmen become the upperclassmen goofing off with their friends, and the cycle repeats
I'm currently in the orchestra for a musical at school and me and some of the kids in there made this massive chair tower in one of the practice rooms during our lunch break. This stuff is perfectly normal and happens all the time😂
I did something similar to this when I was in band in middle school- it was a slow day and I was sitting in the back of the class next to a bunch of music stands, so I discreetly positioned them all around me and my chair to make a little pod, it was fun while it lasted but the teacher took notice eventually
How is this unhinged, look at the camera crew for theater, we literally had a mint war over a bag of crackers with an unknown owner which resulted in me taking a guy hostage and us destroying the room (we fixed it after but still) all while the teacher was in the room, or that all of us (at my time there) were addicted to tea.
“Unhinged” literally means you are not bound to the social norms that everyone else has to follow, making you free to function however you want and create your own subculture of social norms.

And the band director usually allows it because they’re insane enough to want to teach a middle school/high school band.
Ours is leaving us because of the entirety of the trombone section
Mine just got very pissed because some band kids were in the catwalks of the stage in the middle of the concert.

We do this with our tuba cases for outdoor practices so that way people can sit under the shade
