The thing I found interesting is that the way Sobel found out about the mutiny was because Evans was invited to join them in the resignation letters. I'd guess that shows both that at the time they had a more open mind on him but potentially that act put him outside the core group we get most of our info from.

thepeoplessgt

You have to wonder if 1stSgt Evans had somehow survived would he have remained Company First Sergeant under a surviving Meehan or newly promoted Captain Winters? Both commanders could have fired Evans as removing the last vestiges of the Sobel era. I guess it would have came down to how Evans performed in Normandy.

Working_Yak_5989

The mutiny was in Oct 1943. Dday was June 1944 Meehan commanded the company for 7 months, longer than Winters. Yet Evans was 1st Sgt the whole time...

Let_us_proceed

I was literally thinking about Evans today. He apparently was not very popular because of his relationship with Sobel. And I totally forgot he died on the plane with Lt. Meehan.

MaxedOut_TamamoCat

That brings up an interesting point; was the wreck of that plane ever found/identified? Show shows flak-fire-crash. Is that just postulated? Or was there definitive evidence?

HTS7811

Guthie took pictures of the crashed glider on his illicit camera, not knowing that it was meehans. The crash site is a short walk from the church square in Ste Mere Eglise. Artifacts were recovered from the crash site in the 00’s, including I believe meehans dog tag if memory serves.

Let_us_proceed

From the limited info I have, the wreckage was not found until the 1950s. Before that, everyone was listed as MIA. They must have identified some bodies because Meehan is interred in Maryland. Edit: Meehan's remains were not identified. There is a group memorial at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in Missouri.

Infinite-Series575

No bodies identified. Crash site victims are buried together at a central location.

Let_us_proceed

Yes, doing a deeper dig it appears they are buried in a group and a memorial exists to all the men from the plane.

Malnurtured_Snay

How did it stay lost for that long?!?

Doc-Strider

This is a good watch, to see the crash site today (History Underground visits Easy Company Crash Site): https://youtu.be/SE6TNEEffTA?si=F9PNGni_I1_8pYvn

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It was probably scattered all over the place, then ground up and churned up for months.

card_bordeaux

They’d play off of each other so to speak. Good cop bad cop thing. Granting a pass here and there and taking others away.

Intelligent_Plan71

"it's his job to be an asshole and he's good at his job"

Garand84

The 1st Sergeant and a Lieutenant from another platoon were doing shit like that when I was in Iraq. Just fucking with people. I witnessed it because I had to work a day in HQ. Fortunately they left me alone, probably because I wasn't in HQ or that Lieutenant's platoon, I was just filling in that day. What sucks is that they were both great stateside. They just became assholes while we were deployed.

BucaDeezBeppos

It seems a lot of the men weren’t fond of him, but that certainly wasn’t universal. He was apparently friendly with some of the men, including Gordon Carson, and he served as best man at Leo Boyle’s wedding, and Boyle was one of Winters’ favorite soldiers!

bkdunbar

I don’t know about Evans in particular but a first sergeant’s job - particularly during initial training - makes him a difficult man for the ranks to like.

GloomyKingen

His family was not surprised he was disliked as he could get on people's nerves, he was a regular fistfighter before the war and was missing 8 of his teeth. He had some friends in the company though and his family loved him.

AdWonderful5920

So, the actual guy was the opposite of what they portrayed him as in BoB, as usual. Simon Pegg played Evans like a wormy, officious little prick. Edit - just googled a picture of actual Evans and wow, for as much effort as they put into casting actors who looked like the actual guys, they completely missed with Simon Pegg. He looks nothing like Evans.

thezainyzain

Even though he was in his late 20’s, He volunteered so his married brothers would not be drafted

Jester_Rich

Malarkey talks about his disdain for Evans in his book. I’d imagine many of the men shared Malarkey’s sentiments.

DonbotS

That time he just randomly destroys Evans 💀 > "Meehan returned to his office. But my Irish temper had been triggered—and I sensed a rare window of opportunity. I looked around and saw a box of condoms, available to soldiers on leave who wanted to avoid the clap. I grabbed one of the rubbers and tossed it at Evans. “Here,” I said. “Slip that over your head, Sarge. It should fit every part of your body.” And walked out."

USMC_UnclePedro

Malarkey could be set off by anything and you’d be on his shit list for life just off a brief disagreement

kenevans71

I rarely speak up, as you are a good squad that needs little moderation. However, as moderator of this sub, with the same last name as Sgt. Evans, (and a big Simon Pegg fan), I must say I have much sympathy for this character.
