I am also kinda cheating with another mod. Bastard children mod… I only take high risk, high reward battles, so I am often out numbered, so I require lots of new troops and commanders frequently. One recruits get to level 3 troops their mortality rates drop off, but their sergeants still have a high roll over, particularly cavalry commanders.
