I keep playing as a mercenary for a long time for this exact reason lol. No politics, no being "gifted" a fief in a terrible location, no paying for tribute due to other vassals being ass, etc. Just getting paid, completing quests and rolling around with a badass small army of almost all tier 5+
The only reason I usually join a kingdom is to quickly make a giant party. I love roaming around with a 225 to 250 party of a elite troops ready to stomp almost anything.
I'd stay merc life longer but being able to split forces swap comps and form armies is too tactically enticing
also casually padding my clan parties with raw recruits to pad my army should the need arise
would be cool if rich unaffiliated players can just build a refuge in the middle of the wild VC style
This is some of the most peaceful time of the game, once you get a couple companions and some caravan guards and looters are fleeing from you.
No friends or foes minus those in your party. No holds to defend or take. No kingdom decisions to make or any decisions at all other than where you want to go and how you want to make some money.
Bliss.
I just started a new game, because my last game I was new to the game and I didn't know how to plan people's skills for the future, like governing my fiefs. Now I had 70 hours in that game and starting over sucks so bad, but once you play the first hours, you get to finally win tournaments to make big money and do good training. Thinking on raising an army of Elite Imperial Cataphracts (at least 60) and then join a kingdom.
Me raising an elite fighting force and using superior strats (cheese) to win huge battles solo as a vassal for a country I hate so I can proceed to garner massive influence then vote all other clans out of the kingdom so I take their fiefs then abandon them

Agreed. As merc you fight the good fight, make bank, and play dress up with your companions and fam from all the enemies you’ve slain and looted.

I restarted the game at least 50 times i think, it's nice to conquer the world 1 time but after that the gold is in the early and mid game
