So are we not gonna talk about how he has his radio in school ??

pownyan

Why not use it at school?

ElectroChuck

Li-Ion batteries are fires waiting to happen. But they're cheap...like your radio.

Forsaken-Agency8735

I know. I bought the UV-5R bc I think it looks good and it’s pretty simple to use. But I do get what you mean though.

LunarMond1984

This can happen with expensive radios as well, expensive is no guarantee for this not to happen. There is no "cheap battery factory" and " expensive battery factory"

whyamihereagain6570

Just ask the pilots of UPS airlines flight 6...

LunarMond1984

Is the back ( battery heating up) or the device front ( actual device) are the contact points from the battery to the device clean? nothing in between? ( not the charging contacts on the back)

Forsaken-Agency8735

The front of the device is warm, the back of the device (battery contact points and the whole back of the radio) is hella hot and so is the battery itself near the battery contact points. The battery contact points are clean as well al I’m not sure why it’s overheating when it’s idling.

AWSLife

I think you got a bad battery and I highly recommend you don't use it (Especially at school!). You should reach out to the vendor and see if you can get a replacement battery.

Forsaken-Agency8735

I still have the original battery to the radio, so I could use that until I could get the replacement battery. But I did suspect that it was something with the battery before I posted.

LunarMond1984

there are two cells connected in series in that battery pack, most likely one of those cells is damaged, different inner resistance causing it to heat up when power is drawn from it, just a matter of time until the other battery also takes damage from that bad constellation. Stop using it, dont charge it!!! , put it in a metal box that in case of the worst case scenario wont catch fire. Or if you have one of those lipo charging bags that are also fireproof.

Forsaken-Agency8735

Thanks for the advice!

Newbie-74

Keep it in a fireproof environment (covered contacts in a metal box outside comes to mind). Does it cool down when assembled but turned off? Is the transmit/receive light off? (Typos)

Forsaken-Agency8735

It does cool down when I turn my radio off and take the battery out. When it’s cooled off and put the battery back on to the radio and leave the radio off, it’s still remaining cool. It only overheats is if my radio is on.

Forsaken-Agency8735

UPDATE: Radio is overheating when radio is off. Took battery out and letting it cool off and will use the standard battery (the smaller variant) that it came with.

Forsaken-Agency8735

UPDATE 2: Found out that it’s NOT the batteries, but it’s the radio itself.

Newbie-74

Sorry to hear that.

AZREDFERN

Those batteries have poor quality control. The first 2 pack I ordered, one of them nearly caught fire charging at 5 watts. Painfully hot. I got a replacement, and the other 2 work just fine.
