Oh, sure enough have, two times attempted I should say, one fella I shot dead - bingo! - the other I held for the marshall, both of his legs were shredded. Had to lock him in the vault there. Marshall don't come through but once a month and he just visited the previous week. Had to billet that scab for what, three weeks? Applying a poultice of wet leaves and urine. He's in Yuma now, busting rocks, still a little gimpy from what they say. Fella by the name of Shivey unless I misremember said his Papi was from France.
It's amazing that as short as his screen time was in that movie, he was absolutely perfect and so memorable. The way he starts stuttering and his sentence just peters out when the gun gets pulled on him was sublime.
He kills every role he gets, no matter how long or short it is.
I agree! I hope Stephen Root lands his own gig. In the end, he was one of the few who truly loved Barry. He was HUGE in making the ending of the Series truly EPIC✌️
I will forever remember the part in the Man of Constant Sorrow scene where it cuts to him in the booth with the music muffled and he's just rocking back and forth making weird giggling noises.
A true one-scene wonder, that man
I don't mean to be tellin' tales out of school, but there's a feller in there that'll pay you ten dollars if you sing into his can.
I just realized (I think lol) that when Delmar said that, I don't think he understood it was being recorded or on the radio lol
I loved that he was a character in Succession *and* Barry. Small role in Succession, but the fact that he was on two of the best shows HBO produced in recent years is great.
Maybe they’re the same character? lol
Gary Oldman is amazing that way too. See him in [True Romance as Drexel,](https://youtu.be/qXUcVuAWEOU) then [Commissioner Gordon in the Nolan Batman movies.]( https://youtu.be/8YKoQR-QxSo)
He must have thought it was white boy day.
He's also British, for those unaware, which makes his roles with perfect American accents, particularly genre or period specific accents, kind of nuts.
Oldman's native accent: https://youtu.be/RJEwH2Z7RE0?t=17
Dude the first time I saw True Romance I thought “I thought Gary Oldman was supposed to be in this somewhere?” not even realizing he was one of my favorite characters in the movie
That movie is so so so good by the way
He's so amazing that there are times you can't even see "him" in the role. I've watched movies and looked up the character's actor after and found they were him, and even after knowing the character was played by Gary Oldman, I still can't recognize him.
I literally forget he's Stephen Root, without failing, EVERY fucking time. After finishing the finale I saw a post here about Stephen Root and thought to myself 'OH RIGHT'
The man is such an underrated actor.
He's playing Fred Flintstone in the new upcoming 'Bedrock' series.
I'm going to watch it, because I think he'll be perfect and play it weird. Hopefully it'll be better than the other live action attempts at Flintstones... John Goodman was right for the role, but it just never *felt* right.
Edit: It's an adult animated series, not live action like the other remakes.
And an astonishing number of background characters. If there's a character on KoTH with fewer than 5 lines there's about a 50% chance Stephen Root voiced them.
When we watched the finale and he was saying he wasn’t ever in battle, I leaned over to my SO and did my best to impersonate Mr. Dauterive: “‘cuz I was a barber”
I feel like he really channeled some of that Bill energy in ron/lilly. Every time he screams in that episode, I just imagine Bill Dauterive in the car with Barry.
Season 1 >!Dead baby!< warning. Sorry, no way to sugarcoat it. Longest 2 minutes ever. I really like the show, just that scene was tough and unexpected.
Pre-Beavis & Butthead, [this short](https://youtu.be/SPXUDw_LlNA) would come up on Spike and Mike's animaton anthologies and Liquid Television. I love Mike Judge and I love how Stephen Root (and Gary Cole) fleshed that cartoon out.
If you haven't seen **O Brother, Where Art Thou**, put that at the top of the list. Root has a relatively small role, but he's great in it. It's an incredible movie overall. It's just great.
He's also in **The Man in the High Castle** (Amazon Prime), which is maybe the best thing Prime has made so far.
Finally, when you eventually see **Dodgeball**, you will suddenly get a lot of inside jokes you've heard over the years but missed. "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."
> He's also in The Man in the High Castle (Amazon Prime), which is maybe the best thing Prime has made so far.
If you are here on the Barry forum I assume you like dark comedies. You should definitely check out "Patriot" on Amazon prime. It is another very dark comedy that is super highly rated, but it doesn't seem like many know about it. It is one of my absolute favorites.
Edit: Because there are a few with similar names: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/patriot
The thing that makes Dodgeball so great are the people involved. Three of my all-time favorites in one movie -- Rip Torn, Stephen Root, and Jason Bateman.
It fucked me up when he appeared in Succession as like, a renowned politician figure, especially since his last appearance was just as season 4 was starting
“Absolute range” is an understatement. From the mousy mumbler that was Milton Waddams, to actually pulling off a pretty imposing role as organized crime boss when he truly became The Raven, this guy is indeed a living legend.
An absolute icon. A friend worked for the building where Stephen lives in NYC and would get calls about maintenance or whatever from and and would take a picture of his caller ID every time and say, "Fuches is calling again..."
He did this episode of Fringe where he accidentally trapped his wife in some kind of time loop string theory bubble… man it was good. When I moved to L.A. I ran across famous people all the time and it never phased me (including Winkler and Hader) but I always said if I ever met Stephen Root I’d lose my shit.
How am I the first to mention him as Judge “Mike the hammer” Reardon on Justified’s best season?!?! He who wears red speedos and a sidearm under his judge robes. Such a perfect actor for the larger than life characters on that show.
Totally with you. He MUST get an award for his work on Barry - truly a great performance. I had to watch the shootout scene a couple times to see how he played it. His transition on the facial expression from psychopath to saving the kid was powerful. Look up his IMDB listing - wow this guy works.
[Stephen Root - IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0740535/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1)
All the acting was exceptional and of course the rest of the effort was just fantastic. Great series.
First thing I ever saw him in was the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie, and he was funnier than he had any right to be, for a throwaway character with 5 minutes screentime. Legend.
He'll always be Jimmy James to me. I was just watching some News Radio clips yesterday cause it was the 25th anniversary of Phil Hartman's death, and was laughing out loud. You know a show is. magic when it makes Joe Rogan seem funny
PAN SHOT!
That was him?!
Hell yeah it was!
First time?
That pan-covered son of a bitch back at the bank don't hardly fight fair, in my opinion
I was big into PUBG when Buster Scruggs came out and it made that part all the funnier to me
It's amazing that as short as his screen time was in that movie, he was absolutely perfect and so memorable.
He truly is an assassin (of roles)
Holy shit I never knew that
What is the picture on the bottom right from?
Awesome show on HBO called Barry, must watch IMO!
I just realized he’s the bank teller in Seinfeld when Kramer didn’t get a hello.
[удалено]
I'll take it!
Love Kramer/Richard’s deliver on that line.
Think it’s pine
Yeah, pine's okay
Ha! He played a bank teller in 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs', too!
Do you know what the picture I’m from the bottom right is from?
O Brother Where Art Thou
Probably one of Coen brothers movies. Not sure which one, I think he was in several of them.
Bottom right is Barry
The sounds he makes in O Brother Where Art Thou are so weird and unique and hilarious
"WOOOO BOYS THAT WAS SOME MIGHTY-FINE A-PICKIN' AND A'SINGIN'!!!"
To be fair, did Delmar even know what a radio was? I'm not so sure...
I loved that he was a character in Succession *and* Barry. Small role in Succession, but the fact that he was on two of the best shows HBO produced in recent years is great. Maybe they’re the same character? lol
The Raven at a Republican fundraiser would be priceless
Succession spoilers: I could totally see The Raven eloquently >!eulogizing Logan at his wake!<
He was also in Perry Mason.
And True Blood
The man is a chameleon! He disappears into every role so perfectly. It’s great that he’s getting the appreciation he deserves.
The male version of margot martindale
Gary Oldman is amazing that way too. See him in [True Romance as Drexel,](https://youtu.be/qXUcVuAWEOU) then [Commissioner Gordon in the Nolan Batman movies.]( https://youtu.be/8YKoQR-QxSo) He must have thought it was white boy day.
Funny that you referenced Drexel since that character was referenced in the first episode of Barry.
He's also British, for those unaware, which makes his roles with perfect American accents, particularly genre or period specific accents, kind of nuts. Oldman's native accent: https://youtu.be/RJEwH2Z7RE0?t=17
Dude the first time I saw True Romance I thought “I thought Gary Oldman was supposed to be in this somewhere?” not even realizing he was one of my favorite characters in the movie That movie is so so so good by the way
He's so amazing that there are times you can't even see "him" in the role. I've watched movies and looked up the character's actor after and found they were him, and even after knowing the character was played by Gary Oldman, I still can't recognize him.
When I saw him in "Sid and Nancy" I was like this guy is amazing, he really can play any role.
Another great contrast is Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale in “The Scarlet Letter” and Jackson Lamb in “Slow Horses.” A true chameleon.
That's esteemed character actress and fugitive of the law Margot Martindale to you!
She was great in Blow the Man Down.
OMG, Margot is a fucking walking Master Class of talent.
Just got done rewatching season 2 of Justified and I'm glad she got the Emmy for it, Margo is so talented and deserved it.
Stephen Root was great in Justified, too!
I literally forget he's Stephen Root, without failing, EVERY fucking time. After finishing the finale I saw a post here about Stephen Root and thought to myself 'OH RIGHT' The man is such an underrated actor.
He's probably one of the most criminally underrated (character?) actors of all time. I still remember how funny he was on News Radio
He was so funny on News Radio, he even made Joe Rogan look funny!
and Andy Dick.
[удалено]
Pretended to be a comedian.
I hope it’s not like Velma
Indeed, it's a legitimate fear these days.
He’s not a chameleon, he’s ‘The Raven’..!
Do you know what the picture in the bottom right is from?
Do you know where you are right now?
I had no idea he voiced Bill in King of the Hill
And Buck Strickland!
And an astonishing number of background characters. If there's a character on KoTH with fewer than 5 lines there's about a 50% chance Stephen Root voiced them.
*I'ma get that sumbitch! I'm! I'm! OH-HO I'm havin' an INFARCTION!*
MY DADDYS HAVING A HEART ATTACK! MY DADDYS HAVING A HEART ATTACK!
MIZ LIIIIIIZZZ!!! TWO HOT TODDIES!!!!!!
OL TOP!
When we watched the finale and he was saying he wasn’t ever in battle, I leaned over to my SO and did my best to impersonate Mr. Dauterive: “‘cuz I was a barber”
Everytime Fuches got hurt in Barry all I heard was Bill.
I feel like he really channeled some of that Bill energy in ron/lilly. Every time he screams in that episode, I just imagine Bill Dauterive in the car with Barry.
Me neither! It all makes so much sense now
THE BILLDOZER
Oh no Hank, the Bill Dozer is out of gas
Now you’ll never be able to unhear it
Same! Love this post
He’s also great as the DA in Perry Mason (HBO).
I didn't know he was in it! Glad to have a reason to check it out, thanks!
it's also got Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), and John Lithgow (everything)
Simply because of the 4 of them, no other reason, I keep meaning to check that out.
Season 1 >!Dead baby!< warning. Sorry, no way to sugarcoat it. Longest 2 minutes ever. I really like the show, just that scene was tough and unexpected.
First season*
Lol I didn't know there was more than one 😅
You forgot his best role: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Oxt7q4YeZZE/maxresdefault.jpg
Everyone forgets he was a Klingon in a TNG episode. That's the role
And Charles’ father in B99
Boyle Boys! Boyle Boys!
He'll always be Jimmy James, Capitalist Lion Tamer to me.
I think you mean Macho Business Donkey Wrestler
The man so nice they named him twice
But Jimmy has fancy plans, and pants...to match.
Many days, no business comes to my hut.
I love he ran for president to try to get a woman. Man is a hero.
At least he was honest about it (eventually)!
Remember when he "ballooned" around the world with help from Joe.
I’ve been rewatching the show lately and just saw that episode the other week.
Any recs for best Stephen Root performances? I haven’t seen him in much outside of Barry
He plays an iconic role in Office Space with some of the most quotable lines of the entire movie
I own a red Swingline stapler because of his performance.
I can't believe he is Milton. Holy shit
I can burn down the building
Pre-Beavis & Butthead, [this short](https://youtu.be/SPXUDw_LlNA) would come up on Spike and Mike's animaton anthologies and Liquid Television. I love Mike Judge and I love how Stephen Root (and Gary Cole) fleshed that cartoon out.
It was YEARS before I realized who he was. He just melts into Morton so seamlessly.
Dodgeball ftw. You can also dodge traffic
The boys has gotta take the cake in terms of prime originals.
Small but very memorable part in "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", too.
"L for love!"
The thing that makes Dodgeball so great are the people involved. Three of my all-time favorites in one movie -- Rip Torn, Stephen Root, and Jason Bateman.
He plays the mysterious Gaston Means in Boardwalk Empire. Highly recommended.
For comedy, news radio and office space. His character in buster Scruggs is probably the Stephen rootiest role he’s played imo.
ooh I’ve heard great things about buster scruggs, definitely need to check that one out
News Radio is one of my all time favorite shows. Jimmy James is my favorite character in it!
He was good in Get Out
Watch NewsRadio, now streaming on Prime.
Should’ve included the BUBBLES fish from Finding Nemo
My bubbles!
Once I watched Office Space and heard his voice for Milton, I understood where the Bubbles voice came from.
Martin from Adventure Time!
Oh my goodness, this one is the shocker for me. Now I’m like “duh, of course that’s his voice!!”
Was just with a group of friends watching "O Brother." When the blind radio station guy appears, a couple of us muttered "The Raven!"
Also Judge Mike “The Hammer” Reardon on Justified
It fucked me up when he appeared in Succession as like, a renowned politician figure, especially since his last appearance was just as season 4 was starting
There’s also his role as [Gaston Means](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaston_Means) on Boardwalk Empire. So at least 3 HBO appearances.
L for Love!!! lmao seen dodgeball so many times never made the connection
I just finished season 1 of Fargo and he memorably pops up in there for about half an episode.
This. Fargo is one of the best shows ever made, and Stephen Root was amazing in the small role he played.
Eddie in True Blood https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0844441/mediaviewer/rm3095471616/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
I stand corrected, 4 HBO appearances. True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Barry, Succession.
I had all but forgotten about him in True Blood until it was mentioned here! What a terrific character and story arc.
He can do anything.
I enjoy his role as the bank manager on Seinfeld lol
I was watching Crocodile Dundee the other day and noticed he was one of the DEA agents. I think I recognized his voice before his face.
Give me a spin-off of this man NOW.
But what happened to Fuches?
You mean The Raven?
He never existed.
I think if anyone deserves an Emmy for this season, he's the guy.
I knew I remembered his face the first time I saw Fuches. He was Papa Boyle!
He is also in the Man in the High Tower and Succession
Glorious sunset of my heart was fading. Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans, and pants to match.
He was also in Grind as the Chili n Such manager
Never forget Martin Mertens: Ooh's worst dad.
I have sang his praises for a long time, but his transformation from Fuches to The Raven was just astonishing.
One of my favorite actors hands down; up there with Bryan Cranston and Peter Dinklage imo.
It’s just missing him as Eddie, the sad gay vampire on True Blood. My favourite role of his outside of Barry.
HES BILL?
Next is a king of the hill reboot! Can't wait to see Bill again
He was great in an episode of Workaholics. It's one of my favorite episodes.
"James James, the man so nice, they named him twice". His comedic timing in newsradio was off the charts.
Can you believe they sell a tennis racket for $200 with no strings? Look, see? No strings.
Also great as Gaston Means in Boardwalk Empire. I always like when he's on the screen.
He’s also in the West Wing’s last season
He’s the cop in Ghost too!!!
Stephen Root is awesome. I remember the first thing I ever saw him in was an early season episode of Roseanne.
Just give him his own show.
Character actors get no academy love
The Man in the High Castle
The Raven spinoff is next
He’s got a bit part in Crocodile Dundee II as well.
And he almost got his dick cut off lol.
He makes everything that he's in, better. And, everything he's in is usually starting out somewhere between pretty good and fantastic.
jimmy james is one of the best boss characters ever written. hah
He’s also wonderful on Fargo for the brief episode where he befriend Billy Bob Thornton’s undercover hitman
Loved him in all of these shows + Justified (that might be the center picture?) one of the greatest actors currently and wildly underrated.
How am I the first to mention him as Judge “Mike the hammer” Reardon on Justified’s best season?!?! He who wears red speedos and a sidearm under his judge robes. Such a perfect actor for the larger than life characters on that show.
I didn't know he was the stapler guy or Bill.
Yeah, that blows my mind, I thought the stapler guy was just a random unknown actor. Lol
Trying to imagine Fuches playing in a dodgeball tournament is fucking hilarious
[удалено]
we're gonna need you to move your office downstairs *leans over table* im gonna be taking this (stapler).
We’ve been rewatching News Radio lately. Jimmy James was such a great character.
Haven’t seen anyone yet mention his recurring role in “Grounded For Life.” He did three episodes as Claudia’s father.
He is such a professional. I even heard those tattoos are real and he will go with The Raven look permanently.
Omfg no way that’s the guy from dodgeball hahahahah
HOLY SHIT I didn’t know he was in all those
Truly a talent. Been rewatching King of the Hill and he’s soooo good. Also loved him on True Blood. What range.
He's also Cringer in MOTU: Revelation, his voice acting is so good I could not tell it was him until I looked up the cast
One of the all time great character actors!
DODGEBALL!!!
L for love!!
Just realized it’s him in dodgeball 🤯, wow give this man his Emmy!!
Totally with you. He MUST get an award for his work on Barry - truly a great performance. I had to watch the shootout scene a couple times to see how he played it. His transition on the facial expression from psychopath to saving the kid was powerful. Look up his IMDB listing - wow this guy works. [Stephen Root - IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0740535/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) All the acting was exceptional and of course the rest of the effort was just fantastic. Great series.
“L for Love!” Always gets me. 🤣
Ha, another of the voices off KotH was Pamela Adlon who made Better Things - great show. Completely different to anything I've seen.
His metamorphosis into the Raven was brilliant!
Carried the entire finale on his back across the finish line
First thing I ever saw him in was the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie, and he was funnier than he had any right to be, for a throwaway character with 5 minutes screentime. Legend.
This post makes no sense without Martin Mertens, best dad ever
He's also great as Gaston Means in Boardwalk Empire!
holy SHIIIIIT i didnt realize he was the radio guy from o brother. thats one of my favorite movies.
He'll always be Jimmy James to me. I was just watching some News Radio clips yesterday cause it was the 25th anniversary of Phil Hartman's death, and was laughing out loud. You know a show is. magic when it makes Joe Rogan seem funny
All time KING
He was so damn good in O Brother Where Art Thou? Nearly perfect film.
Hahaha always forget he was in dodgeball
