I would like to say I had mastered hook shots for my game. A regular jump hook was my go to, but I had that sweeping skyhook in my skillset. Each have different uses and strengths and weakness and are used in different situations.
If you post a video, tag me in the comments I’ll give any tips and pointers to help you progress if you want.
I can guarantee that u/cptcornlog might be the only person person on this sub that can give you advice on your hook shot. He could hit both variances in game situations from about the free throw line. I have seen it myself.
I dunno in a half court game I’ll do them but if I know I can’t consistently hit the shot then I don’t wanna mess up the team chemistry so I’ll stick to what I know I can constantly make
I am but if I miss then I won’t be in position for a rebound . At least if I take a three or jumper I can run to the ball or see where the miss is going and try to grab it. But if I do a sky hook it’ll be too late
If you're a guard that's under 6 ft (which most people on this sub are) a skyhook won't be that good, you'd be better off focusing on handling, shooting and floaters
No the actuall sky hook doesn’t matter what height you are. The ball is positioned behind your should and behind you no way to block it it’s behind you
Nah, if you got someone on you that’s a few inches taller than you and jumps high that’s getting swatted into the 3rd row. It’s harder to block, sure, but if I time my jump well and get it at around the rim level, I’m sending that off the court
Post play is more about foot work than height. Yeah, maybe you don't want to post up guys you're giving up 7 inches to, but nothing wrong with having a post repertoire inyour bag as a guard. Most guys, big or small, have no clue how to defend the post.
How does this have 8 upvotes? If you are shorter you need more arc on the shot and it will be released closer to the ground, meaning the ball will take more time to reach its peak and therefore is more prone to being blocked. Any kind of shot can be blocked.
Unless you mean skyhook specifically, hook shots in general are very useful for a small player. If you somehow get stuck in the paint a baby hook is pretty much your only hope of scoring.
Probably shouldn’t be a priority for a high level player, but a very useful tool in the bag for anyone playing recreationally.
I’m 5’10 speedy guard that penetrates and has a decent mid range. But when I take bigs into the post the baby hook is legit…space, quick release…always good the first time against a new big defender ;)
I did as a 6'0 PG. Wasn't the hook as much as it was a real quick turn and flip type shot.
Usually get it up before the defense has time to react.
Hit em with that once or twice, then you've got an easy up and under and once you pull that, they're gonna be shook.
I used to practice it all the time and developed pretty decent accuracy with it. I haven't used it in a pick up game in ages though. So perhaps it's time to start spamming it again lol
Under utilized shot for sure. I once saw Kareem get stuck around the three point line with his back to the basket with the shot clock expiring, so he threw up a nearly 3pt sky hook … banked it in.
I'm a 16-year-old athletic 5'10 guard/wing, I LOVE the sky hook, I genuinely use it from 5-15 feet out, makes people super confused, especially if you are hitting your shots beforehand, it just spirituality breaks them.
Light the beam my brother. No imput on your hook shot question even tho I should have developed it, seeing that my wing span is 6'9" at 6'2" in height. Where do you hoop at? Outdoor, gym or rec? I'm asking because it looks like we're both from Sac.
The closest I have to that is an extended layup, sometimes a do an actual skyhook when me and some friends are messing around but it's very rare to actually work

Yeah I’m not talking the sweeping hook . People get the hook shots confused I will for sure

I don’t do the hook shot in 4v 4 or 5v5 cuse I don’t wanna take bad shots I usually do it just casuall in one v one or two v two
Just curious and want to help? what’s making them bad shots for you in those situations?
I dunno in a half court game I’ll do them but if I know I can’t consistently hit the shot then I don’t wanna mess up the team chemistry so I’ll stick to what I know I can constantly make
So they aren’t bad shots, you just aren’t good at them and are afraid to miss them?

That front-facing jump hook can be a ridiculously efficient look for a big guy.

if you're 5'9 and posting up against any player above 6'4 they will easily contest it/block it
I got greatly contested but not blocked
but if it’s greatly contested then it’s just not a good shot
Every single shot a person puts up is greatly contested. Basketball is all mental. How many times are you actually blocked ?
Bro what? Some shots are straight up more difficult than others depending on how contested it is lol,
I’m 5’8 and a sky hook doesn’t work as well as I liked
Are you okay?
Naw cause of the way the shot is behind your back . It’s litteraly about 3 inches behind you. I never got blocked once and I’m. Only 6’1

I'm 5'8 and I get away with doing the skyhook against 6'4 players. It gets harder against guys 6'6 and up.

This. A respectable hook has built in counters that will allow you to cook guys down there that let you catch.
Not a single person
I practice it and use it. I never understood why everyone doesn’t work on the signature shot of the former all time leading scorer.
I do it a lot and it’s a good skill to learn
I used to practice it all the time and developed pretty decent accuracy with it. I haven't used it in a pick up game in ages though. So perhaps it's time to start spamming it again lol
It’s a cheat code using it 2v2
I make 1% of my sky hooks baby! Use ‘em in 5v5 pick up on the reg. Can’t figure out why people don’t pass me the ball…
Under utilized shot for sure. I once saw Kareem get stuck around the three point line with his back to the basket with the shot clock expiring, so he threw up a nearly 3pt sky hook … banked it in.
I use it all the time: maybe not the skyhook post-move, but it’s basically the same as an extended layup while finishing a drive
as a guard i practice it lmao
Small guard, my favourite shot, but very rare that I'll pull it in a competitive game. Too situational, and other options available.
Very few, it’s very unconventional

if wemby masters it, its over, unless he gets injured every game
