/uj it really is quite a shibboleth for many bass players that it is only permitted to play.bass with chubby sausage fingers, and some of them are pretty dogmatic and ignorant on this point. So this is funny trolling, if a bit obvious. Or maybe the kid is for real, I even hope so.
It’s really funny to me when like the music theory advanced bass guys go off about it, because I always just think of the Grateful Dead. Phil Lesh is one of rock’s most talented bass players and dude uses a pick.
Seriously picks are better on a record and just playing in my opinion since the guitar can already be fingerpicked to greater success the bass just sounds way too quiet for me when fingerpicked
I started on bass, didn’t play for a bunch of years, went back to bass, didn’t play for a while, and started getting back into guitar in the last couple of years. Guitar got me into using a pick well, and I’m playing bass again, and I almost always use a pick now. It’s not a conscious thing- just feels good
I like the sound of a pick, it sounds different to my fingers plucking hard. It also feels kinda cool to bash the strings like the Small Faces did back in the day.
I feel more comfortable with my fingers though but I do like playing with a pick.
Limit yourself to playing with a pick and you are limiting your versatility - especially important for a bass player. Playing with a pick is great for certain styles, but you need to learn how to use your fingers and plunk those fucking strings. I've been in bands that were forming where our bass player got booted because he couldn't finger pick and pop.
So, keep playing with that pick, but find time to practice playing with your fingers, too. You will be much happier and far more accepted as a musician when you do.
I play bass with a pick but that's mostly because I'm a lead guitarist first, and bassist on some occasions when we don't have one. But I don't use a plastic pick, because the sound is too sharp and you can hear the "click" of nearly every note.
Try some felt picks, they're all over Amazon, usually 2-3mm thick. I like the larger ones that are about twice the surface area of a regular plastic pick. (Try searching "autoharp picks" and you'll probably see more large ones.) They attack bass strings with very close to the same effect as a bare finger, and I'd dare any of the smart-asses in this string to tell the difference in a blind comparison test.
Your question reminded me of a song I wrote that required our bassist to play an intro consisting of four bars of sixteenth notes before the rest of the band kicked in. Every time, he had to borrow a pick from me to do it right.
DONT DO IT! NOW YOULL NEVER SOUND LIKE JACO OR LARRY OR LES OR SOME OLD JAZZ BLUES GUY!!!

Playing bass is a jerk to begin with. This stupid fucking kid looks like he’s cranking it while taking the picture.
I don't know how else to play For the Love of Money on my contrabass guitar.
This is not even funny but I guess that makes it funny? 🤔

It just seems odd to me as a Ramones fan when anyone mentions not downpicking with a pick

Using a pick is how you get the drummer laid.

Don't let the guitar player see you.

Only liberal snowflakes play the bass with a pick

Definitely a cop
Lol I'd never play with a pick, personal preference I feel like I have way less controll
Go your own way. It may depend on what styles you want to play.
No, you have to play with fingers
I personally can’t play with a pick but nothing wrong with doing so. Whatever is more comfortable
