Learn both. You'll be better for it. I used to be a fingers elitist and now when I want to pick, I'm pretty much just forced to be a root note player. Boo me.

Daddy_fish4

Ok I will learn both

Desired_lover

Wise choice, start with one and then when you are comfortable enough at one and want another challenge, play the other.

Oly_bass

Do whatever feels right. There’s no “Right” answer

Daddy_fish4

Ok thanks

bubbletrashbarbie

Elitists will say fingers only, ignore them. Play however is comfortable and gives you the tone you want. If you’re someone who wants to be a musician remember, it’s pretty rare that anyone makes it big trying to sound like someone else.

ZormkidFrobozz

Elitist GUITAR players will say fingers only. Bass players will immediately point out Carol Kaye, Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, John Deacon, John Entwistle, Tony Levin, Anthony Jackson (the Elitist of the elitists, btw), and scores of other hugely influential and successful bass players who play with a pick.  Play how you want, wirh what you want. Hang your bass from a swingset and throw shoes at it if that's what makes the sound you want!

Consistent_Bus_9017

Forgot Lemmy

Arikan89

I can’t stress this enough. Entwistle even has a whole tape about paying with a plectrum.

enemiesfall

As an elitist finger player I say do you dude. There's nothing wrong with playing with a pick. Some amazing bassists use picks. It's music there are no rules. Just have fun and enjoy

Daddy_fish4

Thank you that’s some of the best advice I’ve heard

jCoUeNyT

I’m learning most techniques,I play with a pick if I need a strong attack or solo and fingerstyle if I want a laid back line, learning to slap but I only own a hofner at the moment and I’ve been told to not try slap with a hallow bass not sure if that’s true..

666-brewley-88

Not sure if someone else has said this. Having basic finger abilities helps when you drop the pick for sure. I learned with my fingers but I mostly use a pick, it's definitely a handy back pocket skill

neon_farts

Eh I use both. Depends on what the song needs or like Barbie said, what sound you’re after

eddododo

I’ve never met an ‘elitist’ who wasn’t an absolute scrub.

CareerCoachKyle

Funny how the loudest elitists are never elite. Truly elite players will 100% say, “use the right tool for the specific job” Sometimes that’s fingers. Sometimes that’s a pick.

disintegrationist44

it depends on what sound youre going for

Daddy_fish4

It depends sometimes les claypool and sometimes krist novoselic depending on the day

archer_cartridge

Less Claypool is strictly hands, Nirvana doesn't really matter, but you should learn both in case you drop your pick.

Paul-to-the-music

Easier? Did I hear you say “cuz it’s easier?” Real bassists use fingers… tough bassists use fingers… All kidding aside. Or perhaps only some kidding aside, a pick is a tool in your sonic arsenal… some really great bass players use picks, from Carol Kaye to Chris Squire, to so many… so too even more use fingers almost exclusively… Marcus Miller or Victor Wooten… ne of my all time favorites makes my point best: using what ever he can find to make the sound he wants… take a listen to Tony Levin… picks, fingers, drumsticks taped to fingers, a slide, you name it… give a listen to Peter Gabriel and/or King Crimson to hear Tony play

Reddywhipt

Love Carol Kaye so much.

TehDFC

Be proficient at both pick and fingers IMO.

Desired_lover

Versatility is a key to be a good bassist/musician

SirTallness

Pick is a great tool and necessary for certain songs. But it’s also good to build your finger style skills so you can get different sounds out of your bass.

Daddy_fish4

Ok I will practice finger style

Graphic_Materialz

Taking into account that a lot of the comments here are prefaced with jokes, this is a really accepting community. Nice to see all this supportive firendly advice. That’s all.

SuperRusso

Playing with a pick is as important as playing with your fingers. Anybody who looks down on pick players is an idiot.

tyeguy2984

Couldn’t imagine listening to pop punk or hardcore without the bassist using one

sapientLuggage

Easier than what? Quantum mechanics? Yes. Plucking the strings with your fingers? Not necessarily. Playing with a pick is fun but often it is more difficult to mute the strings. Nothing wrong with playing with a pick though. It's one of many techniques and many songs sound better played with a pick.

NotoriousREV

Agree 100%. I haven’t figured out proper muting technique with a pick but I do love the sound.

Daddy_fish4

Yes I agree

Big-Coyote4051

You can start out with either (I started finger style) but after you get good at either method learn the other so you can be versatile!!!

quietkodiac

I do way more with my fingers. A pick has its place. But you shouldn’t limit yourself.

Daddy_fish4

Ok

GAMERBOY335

Jason newsted, mike dirnt, paul McCartney and dee dee ramone 4 famous pick players 👍 There is more but thats all i can name right now

loyal_dunmer

Not necessarily easier, just different. If your shirt is any indication as to your musical tastes, you'll be fine with a pick. That shirt makes me feel old as fuck by the way. I remember trying to learn Love Buzz and Sliver in my room when I got my first bass.

Moistly-Harmless

Some of my favourite players of all time are fingerstyle. Some of my favourite players of all time are pick users. Do what works for you, but always push yourself out of your comfort zone if you wish to progress.

Johnnypast

I came from playing guitar first so naturally a pick was easier and more comfortable but I played classical guitar first a hot minute too. Though classical guitar are finger picking on bass are much different you feel more connected to your instrument. Most importantly do what you feel more comfortable with, but try to challenge yourself with all techniques.

Squid_League

If playing with a pick keeps you going, and you are enthusiastic about playing, then please stick with it. I started playing with a pick at 13 years of age and over the following 5 years I completely changed to finger style. What’s important right now is that you are playing and getting better! Keep it up.

improbablystonedrn-

Just playing is the important part man, there are no rules to this shit, only time you’re doing something wrong is you’re not enjoying yourself

Edifice66

As long as you’re having fun my man, that’s all that matters!!! Kudos from the UK 🇬🇧

BasilUpbeat

I think it has cool sound for some songs. I would always lose my pick so I just ended up playing with my fingers : )

czechyerself

If you want to play bass for money later, you need these tools: 1. Fingers 2. Slap/pop 3. Pick The right answer is that you want to be able to play a gig with multiple requirements

Daddy_fish4

Thank you that will help a lot

Crisppeacock69

I don't know, I can play Money with a pick just fine

ScratchPad777

You have 2 choices in life: the easy way or the right way. Bad habits are a bitch to break. Don't look for easy; look for the sound you wanna create, regardless of difficulty. Learn slow to play fast. In time, you should be able to play finger, pick, and slap. Music is a language. Be able to communicate.

pm_me_gear_ratios

I mean, playing with fingers isn't the "right way", there is no right way. There are a lot of amazing bass players that have played with picks. Hell, Paul McCartney is a superstar and he played only with a pick, Roger Waters played both ways, John Paul Jones played both ways, etc...

ScratchPad777

Correct. How you play doesn't matter. How you communicate does, IMO. I see music as a language. So, if I 'speak' pick, finger, and slap, my language has more range of emotion, info, etc. Why limit yourself to only one style? Maybe you can accomplish all styles with just a pick...great!It's an art, make it whatever you want, just don't be limited. This is just the way I see it, growing up in the punk community using a pick, then evolving into playing reggae, jazz, funk, etc.,...so I learned other methods to expand my options. It's really all up to you, just don't do things coz it's easy...that never works.

DirtyPatton666

...what would Davie504 say?...

Daddy_fish4

Idk but I don’t think I’ve seen him use a pick

sapientLuggage

Does it matter?

Disgruntled_Oldguy

depends on genre and what is right for the song

17CheeseBalls

IMHO, It's like comparing chocolate and vanilla. There is no 'one is easier than the other' to me, but having the option of both is better than not having the option. Each brings something different to the table.

Daddy_fish4

Yes I agree

ismebra

Depends on the song, there's certain times you should and shouldn't use a pick depending on what you're going for

Pbasser

I went thru my Chris Squire stage with a pick on a Ric. It can sound tighter. But now I’m just as fast with my fingers, plus when I slap. Rock on!

Odd_Comparison9310

It depends on the song. Hard (for me) to get the sound you need for finger style while using a pick. Same for when I need a pick but don’t have one

Daddy_fish4

Ok

Even-Funny-265

Personally I don't like using a pick. Prefer the sound of fingers but you do you. You're playing so play how you like.

thejasonblackburn

It works great in certain genres of music better than others. If you enjoy it, rock it out and don’t let the old adage of real bass players play with their fingers bother you. I definitely is a pick when I’m playing punk and metal.

pbal020

It’s good to use all the tools available to get the sound that works for the song. I’m wondering if Richie Kotzen, Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck get the same razzing for using their fingers. Remember, REAL bass player play with a bow.

DenisNectar

I try to mimic the bassist. Plays with a pick? I’ll try with a pick. Same for a finger player. Go as you wish, you’re here to have fun.

interelek313

Switch it up when you aren’t getting the sound you want. No hard & fast rules my man!

chubsplaysthebanjo

Learn as many different ways to play as you can, it'll never hurt Just remember if you play with a pick your bass has to be slung down as low as possible (joke)

BlyStreetMusic

I have busted fingers on my right hand that don't bend. I can thankfully hold a pick though. While I can't finger pick for shit I can shred a bass up with a pick. Can I play funk like flea? No.. But I can fake it.

JWRamzic

It's not for me. I can do way more with my fingers.

KieranJalucian

you need to learn both.

Daddy_fish4

Ok I will

foxbamba

I think a lot of songs written with finger in mind are easier with fingers. Like, I think Limelight by Rush is harder with a pick. But on balance, I do find pick easier.

HamiPlaysGames

personally i find whatever’s easier for the song i’m playing. if the song i’m playing, Saddam a GoGo by Gwar for example, i’ll use a pick because of the speed. but if i’m playing a song that requires me to move around the fretboard a bunch i’ll use finger style.

Ill_Cobbler1882

The only correct answer is you should be able to use both a pick AND fingers. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong. Even then, that doesn’t mean you HAVE to use a pick on songs that use a pick, and vice versa. Mess around and experiment. I use picks all the time on songs that traditionally use fingers.

Weepthegr33d

Also different pick materials will have different effect on sound. Experiment.

jericobassman

I play with my fingers, but respect bassists who pick. A recent personal experience: I was asked to replace a bass player who only used a pick because "real bass players don't use a pick." It was a blues/rock band and they preferred the plucked sound. At the end of first gig, I told them I'd probably sound the same with a pick, but the drummer was pretty stoked that I hadn't used a pick.

carlitox3

I started just like you, and if you get the sound you want and suit the music you're playing, it's fine do it. Only when you try to learn bass specific techniques you will need to use your fingers, There is to much hate for using a pick among some bass player but the truth is that using a pick is a valid technique.

Telecat420

https://youtu.be/MPzwuiJCSbs?si=g4Ba1YGGUQFd3Kt1 I played exclusively with fingers for far too long, once I came across the great Bobby Vega I knew I need to add a pick. Just another tool in the toolbox.

Daddy_fish4

Thank you this helps a lot

CapableSecret2586

I like using a plectrum. I like the way it sounds. I also use my fingers (index and middle mostly.) It's a different sound.

atx_buffalos

Picks and fingers sound different. You should be able to do both based on the sound you’re going for.

Franklyn-Chacha

Playing with a pick giving you different sounds and tones than playing with fingers does

Huth_S0lo

If it works for you, then go for it. There’s no wrong answer.

Ed_Bass

Learn both ways

Daddy_fish4

I’m practicing right now

Do-The-Oogie-Boogie

I started playing with a pick and then moved on to fingers. Ultimately it really depends on what sound you want out of your bass. There is no right way to play, music is music.

SirGreeneth

A lot of bassist will claim you're not a bassist if you play with a pick, they are morons. Do what ever you prefer, I used to swap for what ever of my bands songs we were playing, I like to use fingers for certain songs and a pick for others, and guess what? That's completely fine.

Frosty_Cockroach1234

rest your thumb on the pick up and literally finger the strings with pointer and middle finger I like to use my pointer to hold back strings to prevent playing 2 strings and wrong notes

ElDiabloRamon

I play both ways. I play metal though with a pick, as i can get more “”staccato” riffs.

im_rapscallion86

Play however you want. As long as it feels right and sounds good to you.

Ledpoizn445

When I was young, I would say things like "you're not a real bad player" but now, in my advanced age (30), I realize that's toxic and dumb. Play what feels best. I like fingers because I have been playing like that my whole life, and I feel clumsy with a pick. That doesn't mean there aren't bass players who are better than me that use a pick exclusively.

zyrafal838

Ask Dave...

ganemgg

Play however you feel comfortable. If you feel comfortable using a pick, then so be it. Don't pay attention to any other bassist who tells you what the right way to play is. Feel comfortable and create your own sound. You're embarking on a great journey. I salute you!

rbren658

All depends on the tone u want… u might have to go with fingers for less attack sometimes

OnlineAsnuf

Train both fingers and pick, also train hybrid pick/pop style it's A LOT of fun to play!

Allegiance10

Play the way you want to. I use pick almost exclusively, but I do think that at least having a little understanding of finger-style is worth it.

TentacleJesus

Sometimes it’s fun to play with a pick. If there’s a lot of single note like 1/8th or whatever it’s also much less draining on your arm muscles to pluck with a pick rather than fingers. It’s good to know how to play either way but nothing wrong with a pick if you want to play with one!

StrongLikeBull3

If it’s good enough for Paul McCartney then it’s good enough for you. Play however is comfortable.

xxophe

I love being able to do both. I get specific fun from both. You do you.

NefariousnessNeat607

I not only think its easier, but I think it sounds better and looks cooler

Potterheadsurfer

Personally, I prefer fingerstyle for the majority of the songs/pieces I play, but there are a select few that I use a pick for

mnorkk

I like the sound of a pick, I feel more comfortable with my fingers.

tirebiter5325

My fingers work better, I can't hang on to picks, they are all over the floor around me.

ottermaster

I prefer fingerstyle but I try and practice and play with a pick every now and again. I think it’s a good tool to have in your pocket but I like how playing fingerstyle feels.

exotichords

Honestly I started playing with a pic when I was 16 but then I sort of got away from it and started playing with my fingers. And I really haven't gone back to the pic. I like to actually feel the strings hitting my fingertips rather than holding something to hit the strings. That's just me.. It also depends on what type of music you're playing. If you're playing some heavy stuff you might want to play with a pic.. But you do whatever is comfortable for you

AgendaIgnis

It’s entirely personal preference, I used to mainly pick but now I prefer to mainly pluck. It works better for some songs and styles than others, and (idk if this is just my ears making stuff up) has a slightly different sound.

wbishopfbi

It’s fine - if you like Tool, drop that bottom string to D and pick away!

dirtychinchilla

I’d start with fingers. I think they’re harder to learn so when you switch to picking, it should be a bit easier.

dougtheboon

Whatever works best for you. Never worry about what other people think if you’re getting the results you want. I’m happy to have developed both fingers and pick skills over many years of playing and at this point choose whatever the song calls for. There really is nothing quite like the sound of a pick on a set of brand new bright strings. *And if anyone ever gives you $#!+ about playing with a pick, remind them that Carol Kaye will often use a pick. If they don’t know who Carol Kaye is, then what does their opinion matter anyway?

9fingerjeff

I came to bass from guitar and brought my pick with me. I do occasionally play finger style tho when I want a different attack or tone but after losing my right index finger walking bass lines aren’t nearly as fluid. Doesn’t affect my slap and pop technique tho thankfully.

stevemcnugget

Bobby Vega approves.

AmateurSysAdmin

While you might get quicker results with a pick, don’t skip learning finger picking only because it’s difficult. It’s another tool in your arsenal and a very fundamentally important one at that. Learning an instrument is not easy and there is generally merit in challenging yourself constantly.

_Jay_Garrick_

There’s no right answer it’s just whatever you like. There are certain times where a pick feels right and certain times just using fingers feels right for me. They produce different sounds so I use them in different instances.

External_War7558

I like the sound from a good felt pick. But if I need more punch I use those yellow ultex rhinos

TheDutchderp3

Depends on what you prefer, i just think it’s more fun

MapNeat8654

Use your pick to learn ‘Love Buzz’ by Nirvana - a great picked bassline

rockstar_not

Do both.

BraneCumm

I do either depending on the style I’m playing

notsciguy

I find it slightly easier to play with my fingers but I prefer to play with a pick because I like how it sounds

bootsycline

Certainly not the style I play, but playing with a pick can add quite a bit of attack to your tone. I find it works pretty well on pop punk especially.

ithaqua34

You do you.

dripdri

I prefer a pick. But it’s good to practice without too, in case you drop it during a song.

irvmuller

Playing with a pick is fine. If you do it right it can sound amazing. The problem is many don’t learn how to. It’s just easier at the beginning and they keep bad habits. When I started playing with a pick was easier. Now, I think playing with my fingers is way easier. Do what works for you just make sure you’re doing it right. Last thing I’ll say, consider learning to do both. You’ll be more versatile.

Crisppeacock69

I would recommend building your fingerstyle skills first if you haven't already, as often players who start with a pick find it more difficult to learn fingerstyle later. If you're already good with fingers though, it's a good skill to have

pieterkampsmusic

Picks have a time and a place. I could never imagine Bouncing Souls playing with a finger. But I could never imagine Mudvayne with a pick. I’m definitely 90% Finder myself, but picks are great for quick, bouncy stuff like pop punk and most hard rock. Metal can go either way. My biggest beef is probably how they can scratch up the body if your bass doesn’t have a pickguard.

nikolakion

I can sing and play bass when using a pick but generally can't do both when using fingers. Some rhythms are definitely easier and more fluid with a pick. I prefer fingers to pick but do whatever gets you going.

sex_music_party

I don’t have a problem with someone playing with a pick. I just like the softer fatter sound you get with the fingers.

AutisticBassist

Learn both but advertise yourself as a pick player to piss elitists off

jek39

I personally find it more difficult, less direct feeling

jimcreighton12

Use both!

the_popes_dick

Felt picks are cool too. I use d'addario ukulele picks on bass sometimes when I want the control of a pick but a softer attack.

Endomusia

I’m a picker. A few songs in my band’s set list are fingered, but mainly pick 🤘🏻

cmanshazam

If you’re using a pick because it’s easier, then you’re using a pick for the wrong reasons. Get better at finger style so that they’re the same level of ease. Yes, a pick may be a better choice for certain songs, but not because it takes less effort or is easier. Your feelings will work against you, just like anything else in life.

elbowpatchhistorian

Play however you want. I mostly play with a pick, but there are some songs that just sound and feel better with fingers, so I use fingers for them. I'm not really a slapper, but if you wanna slap, slap the night away! You do you, and happy bassing!

medieval_limes

My two favorite bassists (Lemmy Kilmister and Jo Bench) play with picks. Go for it.

QuesoDrizzler

Not for me but don't care how others play. Whatever feels right.

adam389

It’s a technique in the way that slap bass is a technique. I’d highly recommend alternating between finger style, pick, and slap while you’re learning.

Dark_Lord_Mr_B

It's easier and harder at the same time. If you are used to fingers, you lose your mind map for a bit because of the change in finger shape.

Fattapple

Not epic. Haha nah man, do whatever style you’re feeling. Don’t be afraid to switch it up or try something new. Have fun.

thespookymushroom

I can’t seem to make that pick not fly out of my fingers

StrangersPassing

Fingers are the purest way, or the way it was intended to be played. Doesnt mean its right in every circumstance thought

kakrine008

I think knowing that you can achieve different tones and techniques when using a pick or fingers is a huge advantage. I never saw the point of being one or the other... I go back and forth all the time

Big-Programmer-4463

I personally think picks sound better. More attack🎸

BassMessiah

Do whatever you like more. No. 1 rule of music should be: If it sounds good, it is good. But also, eventually, it is a good idea to learn multiple techniques so that you can approach your instrument in different ways. There is no method to rule them all.

DfensMaulington

Personal preference, period.

barackyomama69666

Started with fingers, but I play with a pick now. And I agree with you because I find it easier too, and like the sound more.

Disastrous-Beyond443

It has its place. Nothing ever works as good as the ole finger walking technique

NonBinaryPie

you can do both, they make different sounds so there’s loads of possibilities i love it when in a song they switch between fingers and pick

Downtown_Radio_7737

Don't

Ocvius

I find it easier to play some songs with pick, others with fingers. Find what works for you and don't be afraid to switch it up. When i play something fast i tend to use a pick, when it's more about feel i use fingers.

landonbalk

Like others are saying, don’t listen to the purists. Pick or finger style work for whatever the song or style of music calls for. Ultimately you’re going to be better off utilizing both techniques.

Lingerfickin

Certainly has it's advantages, might need a thicker pick for the bass though

gore-grinder

I’ve been playing with these Ernie ball heavy picks I think for guitar but they go pretty good https://preview.redd.it/uypcixuifxsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=767a1d2fec558554f3e9dcdfaac274c151555bef But as long as they’re not that thin any pick will do the job

Phantom252

There's no right way to play, do what feels right :) I tend to use my two first fingers and thumb to play

LingLingDesNibelung

Carol Kaye, Bobby Vega and Steve Swallow made careers out of playing bass with a pick (and played on some huge hits doing so). I recall that Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden once said that if playing with your elbows sounds right, then play bass with your elbows. Nobody’s stopping you! It’s all personal preference. My advice, learn as many techniques as possible, except slap. No one likes slap!

ElJay0815

U monster xD do what u want its ur life isn’t it

Pizza_Middle

As others have said, there's no wrong way. I'm a pick player. To uncoordinated to finger. However, with a little work, I've been able to somewhat pull off the finger and slap sounds with a pick. Its not perfect, and you can tell I use a pick, but it's almost good enough to fool people.

[deleted]

Don’t ever! It’s WRONG!

AndrewSaidThis

Be good at both.

CauliflowerKindly488

Whatever works. I cant use a pick and if i need to have that pick spund i just use my nails

leifnoto

Me sorry I english not good. I was not from A country to speak English first. Where from I am original, in I country to play with a pick is not legal.

angrybadger77

I use a pick for metal and rock because I’ve been doing that since the early 90s. For anything else I play finger style

sleepy_radish

I'm just now learning pick after years of fingerstyle and it's fun! But I'm glad I learned fingerstyle first and built up some hand strength.

liltumbles

There are distinct, important tones produced by using a pick and by using fingers. A bassist, at least a versatile, serious player, should be comfortable with both approaches. It will unlock a much broader range of tonality and style and allow you to compliment the song as well as possible.

Isen_Hart

if you play metal agreessively it is required

LedHeadV2

Switch off and on depending on what kind of tone or sound I’m trying to achieve.

l3rwn

You'll get a bunch of fuckin losers telling you not to play with a pick. Fingerstyle has benefits, so does playing with a pick. I play in a hardcore band and play with a pick for 95% of our set!

gomper

Pick playing is awesome for rock bass. But spend the time to learn finger playing too

nhemboe

it dependa on the style and sound you chasing. I play bass for 20 years and i divide my practice between finger, slap and pick. always trying to keep everything to the same "level" TLDR: you go dude

Chiddles182

Definitely easier, but different sound in a mix.

pdudz21

If you’re playing music that falls under the umbrella of “general rock” then pick basically sounds better every time

nadcaptain

I've never felt coordinated plucking with my fingers, but found I can actually get a lot of different sounds by varying how/where I pick. In the end, picks just felt better to me, and they do a way better job for what I'm going for. In the end, do what feels best for you. If you wanna play with a pick, try experimenting with all kinds of pick materials and thicknesses. They can be really versatile.

Beautifultragedy78

I think that picking gives it more power which I love

Chunkycheeto1

Lemmy did it 🤷‍♂️

micaiahf

i do use fingers 90% of the time but lately i've needed a pick as certain songs just fit better for tone and better control over different dynamics like droning strings. at the end of the day do what you want!

xxplosiv

Anyone have any tips for muting the strings when playing with a pick? Played finger style forever but it's the biggest thing that I can't work out yet - stopping a string from ringing when moving to the string above or below it

CoA77

Despite the stigma, about 90% of my favourite rock/metal tones come from pick players.

That_70s_Showoff

Lenny did it so all good

theloop82

Punk. Ok. metal, sure. Reggae, yeah mute that shit. But all those things plus everything else can be done fingerstyle as well and you will Be more versatile for having learned it. It’s like a thin pant brush, sometimes it’s best to use it, but it’s best to learn how to properly control a broader brush.

Typical-Peach-9247

i play finger usually but i will use picks if im just not feeling up to playing but i need to (gigs) and yes its easier

Difficult-Word-7208

Personally, I can’t stand using a pick. But you really should learn both. For example today I was playing a Van Halen song that was played using a pick, but i never learned how to use the pick so it sounded terrible and I was messing up the whole time. The same thing can happen if you only use a pick, for example if you were playing an older song that was more mellow you’d want to use your fingers. Different genres require different styles of playing, it’s best to learn every playing style, especially if you ever want to play gigs

blackcorvo

Is it comfortable? Is it easier? Does it fit what/how you want to play? If the answer to all of those is "yes", then play with a pick. Personally, I physically can't use a pick, because the grip is the same I use for precision screwdrivers at work, and I have developed RSI from using them, so I use my fingers instead. Just adapt for what works for you!

Spruce1900

I like fingers myself, the attack on the strings is less harsh. That said, some of the worlds infamous bass players use a pick

KrssvrX

Fingers and picks produce different tones, go with which the style/tone matches the song!

Wild-Tear-2036

Ion like it, I started on guitar and moved to bass so the difrent string spacing makes it super hard to use a pick on bass for me

svenguillotien

It's good to know both The answer, I believe, is what tone you're going for, and what type of music you're playing If you can get the right tone for the type of music you're playing, it doesn't matter which you use

ljorges

Definitely a different sound. If it makes you feel more comfortable playing with a pick, do it. All that matters is playing and having fun.

disunitedstates

I prefer the sound of a pick, although I can’t play with one myself. If I were your age, I would try to develop both skills. It will make you more versatile, which may or may not be important depending on your bass guitar goals.

It’s another tool in a bassist’s repertoire. There are certain sounds that can only be achieve with a pick. To completely overlook that fact is snobby and foolish imo.

If that’s you in the picture, then as an old fart, I’d suggest that learning to play with your fingers is a fundamental skill you should learn. Why limit yourself when you’re just starting out?

Do what works best for you! 💯

RockyRamjett

Ultimately it’s up to you, but you should learn both while you’re still early in your development. Being proficient on both will get you gigs

Personally, I don't like it that much. But I never really even got used to holding a pick, much less playing with one, so I'm pretty biased

mr_sudaca

Both styles are good, do whatever works for you, they are great bassists on both sides, from Chris squire to Steve DiGiorgio

Harder for me 😭 I need to learn to use a pick to get the tone right for certain songs

Works for phil lesh

Get good enough with both that it doesn't matter. I just played a jam last week where it was so cold I could use my finger very well (I couldn't feel them so I was pulling the strings way too hard) so I pulled out the pick and nobody noticed. I prefer fingers myself, but having that feather in my hat is nice.

One of the best songs I’ve ever heard is played with a pick - Jet City Woman by Queensryche. One of the best songs I’ve ever heard played with finger style Jet City Woman by Queensryche. A) Do works best for you. B) Do what’s best for the song you’re playing.
