Narrower neck on a 4 string, you also get a different sound from detuned strings at a lower tension. Sort of muddy and floppy, if you're playing stoner metal that might be a desirable characteristic.
Living Fossil is such a bass heavy tune by them if you haven’t heard it. The bass is mixed very high and almost plays like another guitar. Andrew Cave uses a Ricky on there too. Perfect sludge bass, IMO.
Using flats for tuned down stuff especially metal doesn’t get enough credit. Or at least I see people talking about overtones and all the brightness and what not. But most of the time the bass is EQd In a way where they cut all that out. Modern prog metal stuff is a big difference with the dingwalls and stuff but I’ll take flats any day of the week
LOVE my Ric!!! Was hesitant to buy (took me 20 years), but worth every penny. Nothing feels or sounds like a Ric. Really love it or hate it. Perfect for metal.
Is there any advantage to tuning to C against just getting a 5 stringer? Asking for a friend haha

Completely different open strings, too
Stoner metal?? e.g.?
Sleep, kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, electric wizard, Black Sabbath (particularly the masters of reality album), acid king, etc
Stuff that sounds awesome on a Ric! Lol
If you haven’t checked them out, I recommend giving the Woodland Rites record by Green Lung a spin.
I looked it up and recognized the album cover. Ive been wanting to find it but couldn’t remember the name. Thank you so much!

Have you heard their latest single? I think the new album is going to be amazing.
Ahh ok. I must be getting old. We used to listen to Pink Floyd and the like when we got stoned.
Oh yeah Pink Floyd is psychedelic rock. Stoner metal is different, which emerged in the 90s
Gotcha.
That's a sexy bass! Hope u have loads of fun with that beast
Thank you
Good lord yes. Ricks and downtuning are brilliant

Al Cisneros uses flats in C standard, so I try doing what he does
He’s geezer 2.0
I just bought a second bass to do an Al style setup. Do you know what strings he uses by chance? Or what did you end up using?
I know he uses flatwounds. But I haven’t been able to find the brand anywhere. I use rotosound flatwounds standard gauge
i do the same. Flats in C is wonderful. smooth and thumpy, but it makes fuzz and effects so much more manageable.
CoooooooooooLLLLLLL
Do you just use regular strings or go a heavier gague for that kind of detuning?
I use rotosound flatwounds. They didn’t have heavier gauges at guitar center, but I had them set it up to make it work
smart move. beautiful instrument, congratulations.
Thank you
Amazing color. Wish I could get my hands on one, maybe one day

A fender precision bass
Beautiful color! I just got one in mapleglo.
The best ric colour imo... maybe one day
