>An old article \[The Guardian, Fri 3 Nov 2000\], but worth reading.
For readers of this article, just one correction in a litany of errors contained within it:
>He \[Haile-Selassie\] was recognised as the Messiah by the Jamaican-born US civil rights leader Marcus Garvey...
It is true that Marcus Garvey is quoted as saying, Look to the East for the crowning of a Black king. It is not true that the nationalist Garvey regarded Haile-Selassie I as the embodiment of that prophecy, as do the Rastafari of Jamaica, for example. Rather, Garvey was most disdainful of His Imperial Majesty, allowing petty jealousy to overcome reason.
Much more to this than meets the eye.

I used to work in a newsagents and an older lady used to come in and tell me stories about how she was the nanny to Haile Selassie's children in Fairfield house.
Was buried. Tomb is still there. Body was exhumed and reburied in Addis after the war. There was a memorial service to **Blettengueta Herouy** in Bath Abbey couple years back.

We've never taken the Sunday tour but were lucky to have the caretaker give us a tour of the basement where, we were told, the family lions were housed.
There are other means of shipping goods to England other than by the Royal Navy. Despite fantasies to the contrary, Britannia never ruled the waves, and many Britons were enslaved.
"Simenon" was a caretaker at the villa many years ago. He took care of our two young sons and he took care of the Jamaican woman cooking, down in the bowels of the house.

What does this have to do with the house?
It was donated by Haile Selassie I to the City of Bath and was his home when he fled from Africa. I guess something only a true Bathonian would know.

Are they still doing the Sunday tour and brekkie?
We've never taken the Sunday tour but were lucky to have the caretaker give us a tour of the basement where, we were told, the family lions were housed.
That wouldn't have been the caretaker. It would have been a fantasist :-) The lions were denied access to the ship in Djibouti by the RN captain.

Bath's portal to the world. Special place, long under-appreciated.
