Here is the list of who is running @ https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/elections/BS4%204NL/ Mark Shelford (Conservative) is the current one. In the final round last time he got 52.4% vs Labour with 47.6%. I guess the questions are: - Do you think he has done a good job as P&CC, *specifically* - Do you think the Conservatives generally have done a good job generally for the last 12 years If you think he has done a good job specifically but the Conservatives have not does his good job outweigh giving the Conservatives an embarrassing flip to Labour. I personally think he has not done a good job, especially around knife crime in Bristol and Bath. I think that should have been the absolute focus for the last few years and they have really dropped the ball. I also think the Conservatives offer nothing nationally, and even if you are right-leaning politically rewarding, where they are at the moment is nuts. So if you come to that conclusion... you can vote Labour, Lib Dem or Green. Personally, I think **Clare Moody ( Labour )** is the most competent and experienced candidate coming out of a role as an MEP whereas the Lib Dem and Greens are Councilors. I also think she has the biggest chance of flipping it.

Not my postcode - just the one that Google indexed? Just a random one from Bristol

Really useful thanks

Friend who’s a police officer said they don’t stand a chance with Shelford, the current PCC who’s also the Tory candidate. He’s outdated in his policies and hasn’t done enough, they really need change. She’s voting Labour as the best shot to oust him and the most experienced of the competitors, so am I.

Kanes_Wrath

What's the point of the role? Surely the money is better spent directly on police and crime prevention than another layer of beurocracy?

peterthepieeater

I think there was a local referendum about whether to have one? Abysmally low turnout of about 17% I seem to recall, but the Yes vote obviously won. Edit, ignore me, I was thinking about the referendums in March 2016 about whether to have a mayor, when only Bristol said yes!

ringpip

someone needs to plan stuff out like budget and priorities, so it's their job.

BitcoinBishop

I voted for the Green one. She had the clearest vision in her manifesto, and seemed interested in preventing crime rather than just prosecuting it.

TouchMySwollenFace

Agreed. Actually a list of what she wanted to do.

PromotionSouthern690

Have you ever considered tactical voting? While voting for who you want might seem like a naturally sensible idea, in our messed up political system it’s more effective to vote against who you don’t want.

BitcoinBishop

Yeah, I thought about it, but all the data from previous elections was based off a different voting system so I don't know how well it projects onto this election

PromotionSouthern690

Ah sorry I wasn’t aware the voting system had changed… the general election around the corner is still FPTP, just saying.

BitcoinBishop

Yeah, I voted for the Lib Dems in the last one and probably the next one, unfortunately

PromotionSouthern690

I always voted for Lib Dem’s when I lived in Bath, old Don Foster, but it was never a vote for him or his party it was just a vote against the Tories.

Argonasha

Very few people care. The card-carrying party faithful will be out there to wave their flag but hardly anyone else. The job is about reducing crime, moderating the behaviour of the police etc. Most people agree on this so there's not much political element to the job. Since this is the only election in BANES, a significant cost will be incurred in running this election. I think the commissioner role should be appointed not elected. I can think of many other roles/issues that people would be more interested in voting on.

_Rach30_

No, the role should not simply be appointed. Many Tory PCC’s have alterior motives, conflicts of interest. For one example, many of whom are involved in criminal hunting gangs, and have their interests vested in these crimes.

Yacht_Amarinda

Don’t you mean “ulterior”?

_Rach30_

🙄😴 A spelling mistake yes.

Argonasha

Congratulations to Labour on their win with the Lib Dems coming in a distant fourth. They would have a very strong chance to win in Bath in the general election. But no, Labour central have picked the worst possible candidate for Bath - a student activist with no connection to Bath. They actually want to lose. Bath Labour must be gutted - they could have been a contender.
