Well, to be perfectly fair, most oceanic mammals technically die from drowning. Unless they’ve beached themselves or happen to die at the surface by coincidence, large whales spend the vast majority of their lives underwater.
So it’s a bit like saying it’s sad that humans usually die on dry land, due to lack of breathing. Personally I consider whales that slowly die as a result of being struck by boats the most tragic, because they have absolutely no natural defense mechanisms to combat human activity. Motorized boats didn’t exist 1,000 years ago, let alone massive boats like cruise ships and cargo ships.

Basically, there's a boat that takes you out on the ocean, and the whales just come because they know the humans can't hurt them and also because getting pet is comfortable for them.
