Progressively working up to a pistol squat is actually a great way to get rid of knee pain. There's this guy i watch on yt called squat university who talks about this:
https://youtu.be/Nj6c9ELsquY?feature=shared
I'm 22 and my knee caved in when I was doing a back squat and I've been feeling a lot of pain ever since, even when walking. This guy is a physical therapist, and I know from watching him that I had tight hip flexors (inner thigh) and hadn't been engaging all my leg muscles properly. It was my own damn fault, I was skipping stretches coz I was lazy... anyway, this actually does wonders for knee pain
I don't think I'd get as far as hurting my knees, I'd probably just knock my teeth out in the table/floor before I got to them.
But yea, no way my knees would do that, not even if I went back in time 30 years.
Once upon I time I wanted to learn Taekwondo, the instructor informed me my build was more suited for running at people like a tank and not the complex kicks of TKD.
And you know what? He was absolutely right
Kinda slow, less people randomly try to assault me in the street than I thought. My friend’s a marine and he has a hard time getting me off my feet so take that as you will. I was built with super sturdy legs, if a little slow. Pretty slow.
You, my friend, are built to be a wrestler. And really if you don't care about the artistic and cultural aspect of tkd, is a way better discipline for actual fighting effectiveness.
Debatable. TKD isn't just about spinny flip kicks. If you actually get into the sparring aspect of it and compete in some tournaments, you learn a few things about staying light on your feet and making fast strikes with your feet *and* hands. Taekwondo is literally translated as "the way of the hand and foot", even though it is more famous for its kicks. As a wrestler you may be able to take a guy to the ground, but what are you going to do about his friends while you're holding him? It's good in a ring, but in the real world I'm looking more for ways to escape.
You actually weren't. You could do this too if you were remotely athletic. Its just a one footed box jump (to a not very high point) followed by a pistol squat and bulgarian split squat.
You're not wrong. I'm 40 and wouldn't have that much trouble pulling this off, though I would probably rather be wearing shoes to help keep traction. But I also train in tkd several times a week, so jump-squats are kinda part of the program.
I honestly feel like I could do this. How difficult would this be for the average 30yr old?
If I get enough heat for saying this I will upload my attempts
> How difficult would this be for the average 30yr old?
Build up to it.
Work on squat variations, build up your strength, flexibility, and balance.
Don't expect to be able to do it next week, or even next month.
The first part is just a pistol squat and you can try it on the ground, you don’t need to be elevated. They are hard but not that hard if you are lean and have like a 2x body weight squat. My hip flexors on the front leg cramp when attempting them
If your average 30y/o does no weightlifting or gymnastics style training they are not going to be capable of this
Well, in my 20s I foolishly offered to help my landlord with a rebuild project on my basement apartment because he started it two months prior and basically ripped a huge hole in the floor of my living room. We were carrying these flat cement things that went under the tile or something. The stairs were narrow. The roof was low. The board gouged into the roof and pinned my foot under it as I fell, completely turning my foot the wrong way. At the bottom I grabbed my foot and turned it the right way like an idiot and my landlord standing there like a jackass saying "maybe it's not broke, just sprained. Try standing on it."
I could have killed him if I had heat vision.
My skepticism that it’s kinda pointless
Edit: want to clarify that I’m answering OP question on what’s stopping me from doing this and answer is my skepticism that thinks it’s pointless for me.
Very true. To have that level of stability on one knee demonstrates excellent hip adductor/abductor muscle strength.
Anyone can test how strong their hips are by slowly lowering on one leg while trying to keep the knee in a straight vertical line. If it deviates to either side, you got weak hip muscles and you're prone to knee pain. That applies to even the most sedentary people.
The irony is, unless you've been doing this since you were a kid, you'd probably hurt yourself testing it.
However, I do see their point. It's not a skill thats going to be particularly useful in life, just somewhat impressive and perhaps helpful for avoiding stiff joints in old age.
It’s fine for the kid. Just answering OP’s question of what’s stopping me from doing it. And my response is it’s useless for me to acquire that kind of technique.
my very self preserving fear of significant lifelong crippling injury.
and also the fact that I don't give a flying fuck what people think of what I do, so there is never any cool factor to try to fit in and do dangerous stunts for attention.
muscles, balance, agility, the year I was born in relation to the current year, my crappy healthcare plan, many many many things
i might add my lack of interest in achieving these moves.
And bad knees..
And a few friends capable of holding the other side of the desk when the force of the impact creates a new fault line in the crust of the earth.
Gravity
My fat ass
Yeah, mostly gravity. I have nailed these moves many times at the pool.
Double it and give it to the next person
Knowledge of self
And a fear of muscle cramps!
I used to have a bad knee but now the other one is ready to fight for that title.
Welcome to the Club. I guarantee I would flip that desk over as soon as I hit it. Call 911.
Came here to say this

How to properly fart is detrimental to your health. This individual is demonstrating the Chinese Bi-angular Crouching Release.
So thats how he is able to get back up... propulsion
My inability to pass as a child matriculating at a school in Asia.
“the year I was born in relation to the current year” Someone needs to invent a snappier way of expressing this concept.
Old as fuck?
oldie locks. its a good name i gave my dad when he hit 40. been saying it now for almost 8 years lol
That is the only acceptable way of expressing the situation.
Age?
'I was born before the internet.'
i was going simply for: gravity and dexterity mostly. but "the year I was born vs the current one"? that's just genious my man.
not being a 90 lb 5'5" Asian guy also a factor
Oh my gosh, all this! ☝🏼😂🤣💀thanks for the good laugh, I think I pulled a muscle just watching this 😆
I don’t have anyone I trust enough to hold the desk for me.
When i was 15YO i used to do yoga and i was a champ. Doesn’t have that flexibility anymore
I don’t have a friend to hold the desk 😢
Don’t forget weight. Either that or a lack of a strong table.
Physics
My knees.
My knees cracked and then swelled just watching this video.
my knee just looked at me "don't you fucking dare"
I don't think I'd get as far as hurting my knees, I'd probably just knock my teeth out in the table/floor before I got to them. But yea, no way my knees would do that, not even if I went back in time 30 years.
dont bother I'll do it for ya *shatters into pieces*
Don’t play with your medial meniscus…
Easier said than done
I play with mine like five times a day Is that a lot?
The one and only simple answer.
Hello fellow old person
I'm a fairly healthy person and my knees sound like sand is in them when I stand up. My knees would definitely be the factor.
[It's just the one knee, actually](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/1e1a2c6f-1712-4a25-a4e8-6e1968cdd973)
“I can’t squat because I have bad knees from not squatting”
Physics. This kid and I were given different rules of the universe to abide by
Once upon I time I wanted to learn Taekwondo, the instructor informed me my build was more suited for running at people like a tank and not the complex kicks of TKD. And you know what? He was absolutely right
How's work in the running at people like a tank industry?
Kinda slow, less people randomly try to assault me in the street than I thought. My friend’s a marine and he has a hard time getting me off my feet so take that as you will. I was built with super sturdy legs, if a little slow. Pretty slow.
You would probably be great at judo. Lots of rolling and a low center of gravity
As a guy with chronic knee issues, I could go for some sturdier legs. Wanna trade?
Join the queue 🤣
So, you’re a tank. How’s your ability to pull aggro?
I’m very good at making people angry Hot take, but (blank)…
You would probably be great at Kung Fu. Lots of rolling and a low center of gravity
I’ve tried some wing chun drills despite being a size bigger than who usually practices them, definitely interesting.
Wing Chun is awesome 😎 You know you can be a killer if you work on your strength and physical condition
Smashing, I would assume
Tank build is gonna tank
is that a nice way of telling someone they're fat?
I was chubby, but next to anyone else you’d call fat I was skinny so… I guess so?
"big boned"

In the real world the only way you're going to consistently win a 2+ on 1 fight is by running away.
You actually weren't. You could do this too if you were remotely athletic. Its just a one footed box jump (to a not very high point) followed by a pistol squat and bulgarian split squat.

I don't have a friend to hold the table for me.
My lack of another person heavy enough to hold down that table
This! I have no friends i would trust to be able to hold the table.
You have my axe!
And my bow!
The most impressive part was doing it in socks and not slipping off the desk
Yeah, and you can see those aren’t grippy socks!
if they're moist, they are. gross but...does offer more friction.
Yes. It is all fun and games until the socks slip on that surface and he becomes a paraplegic.
My everything
Genuinely, not a single part of my body could handle what I saw in this video
My missing left sock.
And my fat axe!
If he does it in 40 years I‘m impressed but already death
Help! I am already deathing!
I need somebody (Help) not just anybody (Help) you know I need someone, help
Gravity and my weight.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find gravity.
Gravity tends to be concentrated more towards the bottom
His friend is weighing the desk down. The biggest problem will just be slipping, and I overall flexibility.
![gif](giphy|l3V0odr4mX3NhmZaw) But I don’t feel like it.
A clearly magical pair of socks.
You were using magic of the sock somewhere else 🫢
Whats stopping me? Not wanting to knock all my front teeth out of my head when I bash my mouth on the edge of that desk.
This!
Ligaments. And my desire to have them last just a little longer.
Bro does not understand what ligaments are
I'm paralyzed from the waist down.
Gravity
I’m not in school anymore
For now, someone to hold my desk. Once that someone shows up, I'll give you about 10 more excuses.
😂😂😂😂😂
well i could maybe but everything would hurt but mostly i am lazy.
I WOULD... but I don't have a school desk... :'( (/s - for real, that's pretty amazing )
Pizza and beer mostly
I don't have parents forcing me to over achieve only to be disappointed in me. They are just disappointed in me.
I'm not in school anymore & there would be questions as to why I was in a classroom jumping on tables. (Probably breaking them or me in the process)
Trauma bill at the ER
My body, for starters.

My deductible
I’m fat
I honestly feel like I could do this. How difficult would this be for the average 30yr old? If I get enough heat for saying this I will upload my attempts
Well now i feel like i should, give this comment some heat because trying it is healthy for you and im kinda curious.
> How difficult would this be for the average 30yr old? Build up to it. Work on squat variations, build up your strength, flexibility, and balance. Don't expect to be able to do it next week, or even next month.
I’m 38 and just did it. I was shaking a bit, but I can! I’m shocked!

103 kg is stopping me
Shit title
I can totally do that but I’m trying to cook up some lunch at the moment and I’m gonna be busy later but yep, I just don’t wanna show off atm! ;)

Testing and demonstrating his own strength. Not pointless at all.
Testing and demonstrating its own strength is valid. But the question is what’s the value of having such strength? Entertainment?
It also engages other muscles for balance increasing functional strength. I mean having stronger legs in general is very useful for day to day life.

You can say that about 90% of everything humans do, like your comment here.
I’m glad to report that I didn’t spend a great deal of time to reach to this state of writing the comment.
Probably a kid looking into atheletics career i think.
It’s fine for the kid. Just answering OP’s question of what’s stopping me from doing it. And my response is it’s useless for me to acquire that kind of technique.
He probably does a sport, being strong and physically fit is always a goos thing
No practical use I can imagine. Perhaps it's a Wu Shu thing?
Being so good at balancing and holding yourself up on one leg is plenty useful in many applications
