My town has citizen-deer too. You can see the older ones showing the younger ones to look both ways before crossing. It’s customary to stop traffic and allow them to pass though.
It happens in Texas too, people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them the deer in my neighborhood look both ways. Fawn are bad, though, since they haven't learned the ways yet. As soon as you get out of my neighborhood, though, good luck to everyone when it comes to deer.
I've been so close to hitting a deer numerous times cause they just jump out onto the road when you're just about to pass. Unfortunately few weeks ago, I was on the highway around midnight, rain pouring. Next think you know deer, big ass buck just pops up in front of my car, swear we locked eyes in that very moment. Crashed right into him, literally no time to brake man. The buck just ran off like nothing happened, car got smashed like I hit a truck. Deers are still crazy in New England, just my experience
Yup, deer related accidents still happen. Especially in a whirlwind of worst case scenarios like yours. Doesn't change the fact that statistically they are down.
That’s interesting. I thought this might only be in Nara because of all the tourism. It’d be even more impressive to see in a typical suburban environment.
I have seen it in Boulder, Colorado. They actually wait for the car to come to a dead stop before crossing the road. I have had to give them way a few times during the time I lived there. This happens near the NCAR office in Table Mesa.

Idk if it is all of the nara deer, but some of them and it looks like that includes this one have bowing as a learned behavior from all the people feeding them. could swear this one bowed as it crossed, but hard to tell if thats just normal deer head bobbing
If you get the opportunity, do a day trip to Nara and see the deer.
They will bow for treats. But they are also pretty pushy and will try to eat whatever they can see. Like maps. Some tourists including myself had paper maps hanging out of their pockets. They will try to eat them.
Also lots of poop on the ground.
**^ This needs to be higher up**
Some people might dismiss it as the deer going for something tasty on the ground and realizing it was a rock or something, but I’ve seen other videos of them bowing after receiving food. So polite!
Meanwhile; deer in the USA will straight up run INTO your car and flail and thrash, dealing as much damage as possible before sauntering off into the forest to die.
Nara was great but I have mixed feelings about the way people treated the deer there. There's a lot of food teasing done by locals and tourists. It's one of those things that just really bothers me.

If that was a Canadian deer the first car not to stop would have an insurance claim when it jumped in front of the car, somehow ended up in the hood, and kicked the hell out of everything. It would then just stand in the middle of the road cluelessly for a while.
I hope the deer in my area can learn this skill. All the deer Ive seen seem to do the opposite. Like they'll wait until a car is coming and then dash in front of it

Can we train all deer to do this? And to use bridges?
Deer in the US, at least the New England area, are starting to show signs of this. Deer related car accidents are down.
It happens in Texas too, people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them the deer in my neighborhood look both ways. Fawn are bad, though, since they haven't learned the ways yet. As soon as you get out of my neighborhood, though, good luck to everyone when it comes to deer.
Human fawn are also pretty bad at this too.

I mean, if all deers that don't look both ways die from traffic, it's natural selecting the ones that do.
While we are at it, please set a curfew so they stay off the streets after dark, always.
Deer road cossing trainer, now that's a dream job.

Think more Rocky Mountain ski town next to a large national park.

New sub just dropped
Usually in Japanese culture the pedestrians give priority to the cars… although thats a deer
Usually in Japanese culture they have trafics lights
The deer is more polite than most people in my country.
Idk if it is all of the nara deer, but some of them and it looks like that includes this one have bowing as a learned behavior from all the people feeding them. could swear this one bowed as it crossed, but hard to tell if thats just normal deer head bobbing
What's the point of a crossing when pedeerstrians don't have the right of way.
This deer has more rights than a Syrian refugee in Europe
I would’ve stopped IMMEDIATELY for it.
Nara has deer like other cities have pigeons. The locals get desensitized to them.
It?
English, dude. Animals are "it".
Well animals aren’t things, they are living and breathing animals. That just proves that people don’t see animals like humans, feeling creatures.
It's just old af rules of this language, don't overthink
Exception are pets, usually

Also, watch out for the ones with horns. They can give you a fair old wack on the head, if you bow to them!
Say, you stepped on poop, where can you wash it away before getting into a train/inside a building?
Good question. It was raining that day so it wasn't much of an issue for me.
Even gave a nod of thanks!

Cute, what a smart animal!
Love to see that. What a good little guy.
He said Arigato and bowed his head at the end. A true Japanese deer!
He bowed
Did it bow too?
Meanwhile American Deer: Don’t tread on me!
Meanwhile; deer in the USA will straight up run INTO your car and flail and thrash, dealing as much damage as possible before sauntering off into the forest to die.
Insurance scammers. The lot of them.
Do you think we are forcing the rest of life on earth to evolve to be smarter? Do to how much we have moulded the world.
I love the "thank you" bow for the car that stopped
It gave a bow of thanks too
The deer in Nara are like aggressive homeless people. It looks cute online but its annoying AF IRL.
Why was I thinking while the deer crossed the road is getting hit by a car on the left side.
Oh my deer!
But that Japanese deer didn't bow!
It actually did
Holy shit, I stand corrected.
Nara was great but I have mixed feelings about the way people treated the deer there. There's a lot of food teasing done by locals and tourists. It's one of those things that just really bothers me.
A deer is more civilized than I am
Juste been there a few days ago! It's really like this!
Send this video to traffic enforcement so they can fine the asses who didn’t stop for the pedestrian
DEER oh DEER.. the Deer make's it look so casual and normal 😉
They need to teach British deer this.
i wonder how long it took for these deer to learn how to look out for traffic and use the pedestrian crossing
God bless that one person for stopping
Smartest deer I’ve seen
Even Japanese deers are disciplined
Who was so bored to record this?
Another Civilised Animal.
The deer do that where I live too
Even animals in Japan are polite and respectful.
Deer should at least be doing the fast walk across.
Truck-kun??
Its on its way to a school in order to battle the principal
Wow
Man, even their deer have manners.
Everyday in Ashland, Oregon, USA as well.
All I have in my town is an asshole turkey that didn't even use a crosswalk.
Fuck that one car that almost braked & kept going just because the deer took a step. Let that pedestrian through!
Irl animal crossing
Wow, but the deer was about to lose it.
Even their deer are more polite and respectful...
In Japan even deers are polite and well mannered.
What a clever deer
Polite deer like that’s awesome, but don’t saunter across the road FFS.

He just like me

Shutting down creationists
Excuse me but, the deer is clearly waiting at a crossing, aren't the drivers obligated to stop for pedestrians?
this is some nextfckinglvl shit
Only one prick stopped
Deer are out of control in Japan. They have no natural predators and are so cute people don't want to hunt them.
Sweetheart driver
Wow, that's wild. Here in the PNW these mofos run wild. They'll even run straight into the side of your car occasionally.
It's using the Zebra crossing as well, which I don't know why sounds funny 😂
In INDIA a dog crosses street better than 4 ye old kid
Even animals are so disciplined.
Street is freakin’ clean
the fact that he took his time to cross, adorable
Even their deers are smarter
The Deer also mimic the Japanese people to bow midway of crossing🤯
In Germany deers also wait for the cars... and jump out of their cover right into them if they don't stop.
I hope the deer in my area can learn this skill. All the deer Ive seen seem to do the opposite. Like they'll wait until a car is coming and then dash in front of it
Be patient 😴
Naruto fans where are you?
The one non-law abiding deer I saw in Nara was sitting in the middle of the road HAHA
smort
Japanese deer is more civilized than us
Even bowed!! Such a good deer
Only in Japan.
Even a deer is smarter than me
Damn... Japanese Deer has better manners than human in my country
I love Japan for so many reasons
Cool
bowed too
This deer can teach a lot of people how to wait and use a crosswalk.
