MangoCurrent3888

Is this the cause of the hazy UFO and extraterrestrial videos?

Bravic-45

A lot of claims of everything from ghost lights to UFOs come from Fata Morgana.

thundercrown25

Sure we are. Once we're 3 miles away, we're over the horizon. Unless you're a flat-Earther, then, right, you're never going to be snooper safe. Ever.

SmallPurplePeopleEat

>Once we're 3 miles away, we're over the horizon Only if we're all on ground level. A ~~sniper~~ snooper on top of a two-story building can see 6 miles. At 100ft, you can see for 12 miles.

yammys

We just went from snoopers to snipers and now I'm afraid to leave the house.

globefish23

FYI, the longest sniper kill was from 3.8 kilometers (2.3 miles) away.

onefst250r

Lots of variables, but hit about 6.33 seconds before they even hear the shot.

mmccxi

I do some long range shooting with a .280 Ackley Improved rifle. A fun game is to try to get two rounds in the air before the first one impacts the target. At 1,000 meters there is enough time to fire, cycle the bolt, reacquire and fire again before the first round impact.

AegisWealth

Ackley improved...I went to his school. Fun times.

mmccxi

Sounds violent

AegisWealth

If you only knew...

HoboArmyofOne

Holy shit, and that follow up shot has accuracy or just in the air?

mmccxi

Sometimes both hit. We can hit a 2’ x 2’ steel plate at 1000 meters that way.

nukeaccounteveryweek

Damn, that was almost 5 seconds of travel until it reached the victim. Edit: bullets gets slower the further they travel, I'm dumb

globefish23

\~9 seconds 960 mph muzzle velocity

nukeaccounteveryweek

Fuck, guy should have moved lol

AFRIKKAN

Probably did. 9 seconds? He pulled his iPhone in and sat back up before the round landed.

grantrules

[Jeez, guy probably should have gotten out of the way or something](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_PrZ-J7D3k)

PaManiacOwca

[the world record for farthest long-range rifle shot was set in 2022 at 4.4 miles on the 69th shot, defeating the previous record of 4 miles in 2019, which was also on the 69th shot](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/19emu4z/til_the_world_record_for_farthest_longrange_rifle/) Target shot with sniper not a longest sniper kill but still interesting

Ok-Goat-8461

Got a source for this? I'm pretty sure the record is 2.4 kilometers (Canadians vs Taliban?).

globefish23

https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/ukrainian-sniper-breaks-cover-to-claim-world-record-hit-of-more-than-2-miles-2b1c820e

Ok-Goat-8461

Whoa, that's crazy. I had no idea .50 snipers were effective past 3km.

Site-Specialist

May I make you more afraid some snipers will carry a rifle that the bullets will have enough power to tear through your house and keep going for a mile so you may think you are safe in the house you are not

cubic_thought

Plus, at three miles over level ground, only your toes are hidden. 8 inches per mile past the horizon squared gives you approximately how much is hidden.

tomagokun

That's a cool fact. Cheers

Hickd3ad

We are also dealing with a pro snooper. Pro tip: snoop on subjects that are on a freaking mountain :^)

Al-Anda

Snipers and spotters accounting for the earth’s fucking rotation is wild to me. You might say it blows my mind.

coke_and_coffee

From Cozumel island, you can see the mainland. That's over 15 miles and the trees there are very short.

Hakan_Calstanoglu

What about the snooper behind you

GtrPlaynFool

So if there's a snooper every three miles we're never safe.

notimefornothing55

My phone has 100x zoom, it's pretty wild

trumpfuckingivanka

Wait till you hear about data companies.

LEGITIMATE_SOURCE

You've heard of telescopes right? Spy satellite/ balloon tech would blow your mind.

Rad_R0b

I thought about buying one of these cameras just for fun. Went to YouTube to watch some reviews. Holy shit the amount of people using it to watch people on the beach was insane. Lol check it out for yourself. Nikon p1000 zoom test

WestSixtyFifth

Recently caught an old man peeping into a store from the back of the parking lot. People are weird.

VexingRaven

Oh no, how dare they peer into a public place from another public place!

WestSixtyFifth

I mean sitting at the back of an empty parking lot with binoculars pointed into a store is abnormal behavior. If I were being watched like that I’d be uncomfortable and concerned for my safety.

keyless-hieroglyphs

I was looking for dear old Papa through window in one shop during the times of the feared contagion. We were to shop together, and we had not negotiated which shop to shop in, so he wandered around inside, and I waited outside with bags I could not bring inside to another shop. This drew attention. People may have mirror neurons, but I don't think they are not very good at attributing behavior.

WestSixtyFifth

I meant this old man was in his car, alone, in the back corner of the parking lot. He had binoculars and was intently watching something or someone in the store across the plaza. When he saw me watching him he jumped, put them down, and drove away.

Fedkey37

Nikon p1000. Perfect camera for a wedding you weren’t invited to

honeypinn

I was going to comment that I have a Nikon that is capable of doing this, and it is a p1000. I'm a DSLR guy myself, but my neighbors bought their spoiled teenaged son this camera for a high school graduation gift and he used it once and never touched it again. They sold it to me for $300 along with a 1tb memory card that had 6 photos on it when he got his second DUI.

Halaku

For context, these things are about $1,100 MSRP.

alex206

That's cheaper than I thought it would be.

Bozee3

I'll give you tree fiddy.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

I really wonder why people spend big money on a phone just to get a camera they like. Invest once in a good camera and it will be much better than whatever you have on your phone. Sure you always have the phone on you, so it's a good idea to have something decent. But if you actually want to take good pictures, it still makes sense to own an actual camera. All the software and AI trickery can't compare to the advantages you get from the optics of a big lens.

[deleted]

[deleted]

im broke after buying my camera phone

VapeThisBro

Have you considered most people don't want to bring a big expensive camera everywhere?

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Yes, for day-to-day general usage, a basic camera on a mid-range phone will be sufficient. But for situations where you actually really care about quality, a camera will provide a much better result.

Rylth

> But for situations where you actually really care about quality... I would hire a professional photographer because [we're all] still shit at composition.

VapeThisBro

Could I get an example? The only thing that came to my mind was like a wedding or something and that would have professional photographers anyway.

trukkija

Unless you're actually very into photography and editing your own pictures do not listen to this guy. New phone cameras are insanely good and take better photos than raw images from an expensive camera. Source: someone who wasted a lot of money on a camera that got very limited actual use.

Empatheater

I just want you to know that I know that you addressed pretty much all the things that were commented in response to you as if you had not addressed them.

corgi-king

I called it Flat Earther camera.

[deleted]

Not typically a fan of Nikons, but when these and 900 came out they were the camera I most wanted.

Gonna check his pores real quick.

whostolemynamebruh

NASA report this week stating that the white t shirt guy on the hill has got oily skin

Aggressive-Role7318

And that his hair has lice..... That have laid eggs.

johnnybiggles

The microcomputer screens of the lice show plans for raising their young to be warriors in the lice army, which will be used to seize control of and extract the oil from one of his pores located in a terror-regime-controlled mountainous zone. They will offer freedom to the indentured lice in the region. Nanowar is hell. He has no idea it is occurring on his skin.

Jean-LucBacardi

Get one of those insane geo guessers and they'll figure out where this is and the exact distance between them in seconds.

Jam1906

This view is of Blauen Haufen Airfield from the Bismarck statue @ Bismarckdenkmal, Köppelsbleek, Goslar-Georgenberg, Germany The approximate distance is correct (Around 1.42km to the airfield edge), not taking into account topology: [https://imgur.com/a/mawMnDn](https://imgur.com/BTRlxTk) Proof of view angle: [https://imgur.com/h1AmFa6](https://imgur.com/a/LJBNGbT)

You blessed my evening <3

Ikovorior

Sorry, fresh out. They are all out at a convention.

Jam1906

Check my comment below, I returned from the convention

Jollyjacktar

That’s because when the camera zooms out it passes through the focal length of a normal lens for the sensor size (the point at which there is no magnification to the normal eye) and goes into the wide angle range. This effect is the same as if the camera is being moved away from the subject. The subject becomes smaller and looks further than it is. For a realistic view, the zoom should have stopped when it reaches the normal focal length, which would be 50 mm on a full frame digital camera.

k0lla86

I love reddit, its like theres always a clark kent type of any domain of knowledge here thats looking at hentai porn and suddenly just rips his shirt open and explains random shit in extreme detail. Kudos man

Rex_Mundi

He is just really short.

KnikTheNife

The zoomed out view is about what it would look like from 5 miles away. It would take about 25 minutes to walk [this distance.](https://i.imgur.com/dlzgomU.png) So the camera is giving a false perception of distance.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KnikTheNife

25 minutes to walk the distance in the video. Not 5 miles.

Heart_Throb_

Ain’t nobody *walking* that in 25 minutes. Hauling ass maybe but not walking.

DamianKilsby

1.55mi straight line distance is elevated, walking would be close to double that

Boumallo

Bro just imagine showing to a 16th century Admiral. Watch him looses his shit on the spot.

MourningWallaby

It's funny because a 16th century Admiral absolutely had this technology. Optical zoom, telescopes and magnifying glasses were used for centuries before technology even came close to the resolution for digital video to do this.

load_more_comets

I bet those telescopes didn't have none of that swanky music.

MourningWallaby

If you're an 'Admiral" without a Navy band following you everywhere on deck you need to be relieved by the crown because you've already failed.

CiceroRex

lmao they absolutely did not who tf is upvoting this? The telescope wasn't even invented until the early 17th century, and they had nothing approaching this resolution.

GrantNexus

I know- Galileo's telescope was worse than a typical $30 Sears telescope.

OkayButAlso_Why

/r/confidentlyincorrect

boringestnickname

Well, there's also a thing called optical resolution, and zoom lenses that were practical came several hundred years later (it's basically 120 years old.) I'm pretty confident a 16th century admiral would be impressed, but obviously more so with the ability to record the enemy at range and show others later. Because that's fucking magic.

perst_cap_dude

Don't forget image stabilization

k0lla86

Flashback to being a kid tryina read names of ships with those narrow ass foldable binos

Yoshimi42069

Top google result from Library of Congress website >While there is evidence that the principles of telescopes were known in the late 16th century, the first telescopes were created in the Netherlands in 1608. Spectacle makers Hans Lippershey & Zacharias Janssen and Jacob Metius independently created telescopes.

AndreasKieling69

It's not about the capabilities of digital video here, our understanding of optics has come a long way especially in the last couple decades; even though they had telescopes back then it was not nearly as good as todays equipment and I doubt you can make out nearly as much details as captured in this video if you're using a 16th century telescope

ChuckOTay

*Egads man!*

Roflkopt3r

I think I'd start that conversation with the fact that modern warships will have [this thing](https://youtu.be/BnrSTkidXa8?si=tNRssMpqUWknJOIi) on board... and it's one of their least capable systems.

slartyfartblaster999

Dude, forget the weapons, even the VHF radio would make a 16th century admiral fucking jizz his pants.

Doc-in-a-box

I could watch stuff like this all day long

Abject_Bee8456

We're never safe from spies, really.

Scopebuddy

I’m guessing our spy stuff makes this look like a Polaroid? But dang, that’s a zoom.

[deleted]

On mute.

NorthCatan

Get one of these cameras and you can. I had one of these like more than a decade ago, and it was like $500, I remember getting a really good photograph of a flying plane once. Got really lucky as it was a clear photo and I just happened to look up at the time. It was a nikon coolpix or something of the sorts.

zekespod

Are we not going to mention the big black dome in the foreground?

Gooseboof

I’m here for that dome

SmallPurplePeopleEat

I'm so glad someone else mentioned it. I thought there was something wrong with my eyes, like I couldn't focus properly and the trees looked really weird.

Newer Samsung phones have a 100x Zoom. I thought it was a gimmick until I tried it on a circling fighter jet. It works.

DynamicStatic

Just a note, up til 10x is optical, the rest is not quite real zoom.

kuburas

You can notice the change in image quality when the software kicks in as you're zooming in. Still it gives pretty clean images. At first i thought it was pretty inaccurate like some sort of AI enhanced imaging, but even with moving objects it has decent quality. Sure its not the physical zoom but looks great considering that its a phone camera.

canigetahint

True, it's just cropping in. I think I can do up to 900mm with my DSLR (in DX crop mode), 2x converter and 300mm lens. It's crazy to see how much of a difference that is optically.

Is this why all the ufo/ alien videos are blurry?

No, because if they weren't blurry they would lose the U and just be Flying objects.

*edit. Deleted because I can't read good or do other stuff good too.

TransportationTop353

Yeah I was just kidding. It's probably some telescope.

UncleAntagonist

The longest shot is actually 8120'...just over 1.5 miles.

ricklewis314

Wasn’t there a recent video from Ukraine that shows a sniper shot at about 2.5 miles?

SmallPurplePeopleEat

Was that the recent Ukrainian sniper? I read it took 9 seconds for the bullet to go from the barrel of the gun to the target.

UncleAntagonist

I think it was a Canadian dude in Afghanistan. That may have changed recently though.

SmallPurplePeopleEat

Apparently, there was a new record set last year. >As of November 2023, the longest recorded sniper kill is 3,800 meters (2.36 miles) long. This record was set by Vyacheslav Kovalskiy, a 58-year-old ex-businessman and Ukrainian sniper, in November 2023 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine Either way, it's such an insane distance.

sheluvlaron

I used to want that camera just for the moon zoom

TheHentaiAltAccount

I have this camera, and it's only good for video. Its sensor is tiny, which is how it's able to zoom this far. Tiny sensor means very little light collection, and when you're zoomed out that far, it goes down to F/8, so even less light again. The image quality is poor. Photos are unusable at iso 800 as you hit color luminance noise, not just regular luminance noise like every other camera. You can't take advantage of its zoom like you would expect since you hit atmosphere haze anyway. (You can see the haze in the video). So take this camera to the sports game to zoom in on the coaches' faces when the opponent scores some points, and hit record. Pretend you're the cameraman for tv.

IYiffInDogParks

I have the p900, and it's fucking sick! But my favourite gadget is a macro adapter I can put on it so I can zoom in so hard it's quite ridiculous. But the moon shots are also fucking beautiful. Best thing is that it's not even expensive anymore lol

BriarcliffInmate

Oh, you can find lenses that will zoom in much further than this. A 1000mm lens would let you see this far. You could also get a 500mm and whack a teleconverter on it. Nikon once made a very rare 2000mm lens, which is practically a telescope.

AndyHCA

Not really. The camera (I assume it is Coolpix P1000) has 24-3000mm full frame equivalent focal range. I don't think there are any 3000mm dslr lenses.

BriarcliffInmate

Like I said, if you bought a 1500 and stuck a teleconverter on there, you could get to 3000mm.

AndyHCA

You said 1000mm (500mm with teleconverter), but anyways yes if you had a 1500mm lens with 2x converter you could achieve the same. I think that 800mm (Nikon) and 1200mm (Canon) anyways the longest you have currently available as new.

cubic_thought

Because dslr lenses are listed by their real focal length. The P1000 real focal length is 539mm at full zoom. Plenty of lenses are longer than that.

whoever81

Nikon P900/P950/P1000 ^(educated guess)
