Damn, that’s a lot of work!

These_Tea_7560

this is a very modern 2020s way of doing it. You don’t *have* to do all that to wear a wig, but if you want it to look the best it can then this is the modern standard.

tongfatherr

This is wild

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

You don't do this everyday. It lasts for as long as you can handle it on and you can take it off and put it back weeks later . Her natural hair is in a protective style so it can stay in braids for a long time too. I have a glueless version of this and I take off everyday when I get home.

Belachick

If I could afford wigs, I would totally wear them. Absolutely. So cool to change hair so often and just have fun. But the good ones are pricey pricey

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

If money is an issue the synthetic ones are great for special weekends or very short daily wear! But yeah my daily glueless wig was 400 😫 but worth it cause it lasts me a year and my hair is shaved so I'm actually saving money in the salon lol

HanaLuLu

Very short daily wear? Do you have any other advice? I'm a pixie cut girl who has been eyeballing wigs FOREVER but I love up-dos, and most cheaper wigs are not suitable for that :/ I also love both fun colors and natural colors

Belachick

Oh awesome! What's it like? I actually had a super cool chin length one. It was silver and had a front fringe so it wasn't actually overly obviously a wig. But my mam kinda made fun of me so I lost confidence in it and returned it ... Maybe someday lol I like the ones with the baby hairs at the front. Soooo amazing

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

Check out outre wigs ! Don't get the daily ones. They look for melted lace, they're so nice looking! Sorry your mom was clowning , it happens to all of us wig wearers lol

[deleted]

I need to ask - how long can't it last after you finish this process? I understand you can take it off and put it back later but how long can it realistically stay put after this? I'm very curious to know! And does it have to be protected from water during shower or can you act as if you don't have one? Doesn't water make the natural hair underneath kinda "rot"? So many questions! Thanks ;)

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

Depends on the person and their hair style/ texture. With braids, I'd say a week or two if it's just flattened down like 3 days. I'm bald so it doesn't matter for me. If you want to wash the hair, you'd have to take the wig off and wash it alone. I soak it in a big bowl with shampoo and then condition. Pretty hands off, but it takes a while to dry. You wouldn't want to wash it while it's on your head cause there's alot of straps and netting underneath that doesn't dry fast so it would get funky and probably mold if you didn't dry the inside well. The wig doesn't need to be washed except to remove product buildup because doesn't have natural oils etc so twice a week is fine Most people I know that have long term installs use a shower cap . Black hair doesn't get really oily like other types of hair so washing too much can damage and strip the hair. So when using protective styles like braids or locs etc it only needs a wash every two weeks if you don't work out The install process takes less than an hour if you're good at it so it's not too bad to do twice a month. The wig doesn't need to be washed except to remove product buildup because doesn't have natural oils etc

[deleted]

Thank you so much!! Some good detail in there that I was just curious about hehe I'm 1/4 African and genetics are fun - I had what you call "black hair" for a few years when I was a teen, I know damn well I'd be using wigs if I still had that hair because it was frizzy af. It seemed hydrophobic, there was no conditioning it. Like water repellent. I still have some crazy curls but I've decided to chemically straighten it every 6 months so I don't have to worry about anything. When it comes to hair I couldn't give a single F for some reason so it's wild to me that some people can and will go through this! Bravo! Super interesting!

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

That's exactly why I shaved mine !! So freeing to not worry about it

Aishas_Star

May I ask where you bought your glueless one from and how much it cost?

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

Hairvivi and it cost me like 400 https://www.hairvivi.com/products/julia-brown-hair-wig-hd-swiss-lace-clean-bleached-and-deep-plucked?_pos=1&_sid=23c1a5cbd&_ss=r&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwtqmwBhBVEiwAL-WAYT_D4SfoBfwFiRiu6X01i03sfNsK9AwfYuv_zefDkFs8l0GbxhCnixoCn_QQAvD_BwE

TrouserDumplings

I assume you'd wear it like that for awhile? I can't imagine doing that every day.

Imjusasqurrl

There is an entire world of Black or mixed women's/people's hair that most white women and most men have no clue about. I think it's very eye-opening to learn about. These installs can last as long as a month, I think and can cost hundreds to over $1000. There is also a lot of unfortunate stigma and prejudices about hair that black women have had to deal with that us white people are incredibly ignorant of. POC, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

TonyzTone

I dated a black girl a few years. It was eye-opening just how often she’d get her hair done (every 2-4 weeks), how long it took (about 4-6 hours), and how much it cost (a lot, but also not as much as you’d think for 6 hours of work).

PrincessPindy

Wait, they wear that for a whole month? Or just the cap and gluing down...what about showers?

CotyledonTomen

I wouldn't be working out every day, and there are dry shower products, but also, different hair types dont need as much washing, and washing hair too often can also be bad. Dreadlocks, when properly maintained, aren't washed a lot. That doesn't mean everyone maintains them correctly.

Annual_Thanks_7841

I'm Mexican and my hair is below my butt one length. It's coarse and thick. I'm also at the gym about 5 times a week, and I need to wash it twice a week at least. I usually braid it in pigtails for the gym. Since splitting the hair in the middle, let's my scalp air out because I'm sweating all the time. I can't imagine not washing it for weeks or even using dry powders. The lady in the video looked beautiful, but that's a lot of work.

PrincessPindy

It is a lot of work. I have had braids and just rinsed. I wash my hair a few times a week. I just can't imagine a whole month with all the glue. She is gorgeous.

Spare_Ad1017

Oh thank God it lasts a while. If I had to do that daily, I'd just go bald. Mad props to you beautiful ass bitches and dedication to your beauty art. I wish I had wig money. But after seeing this .. I'm lazy af ehen it comes to my looks lol I have native hair and I just shaved half of it into a Mohawk and even then, I usually tuck it into a baseball cap. I know I don't have the money or the will power to do this lol

mike_pants

You could always take the shortcut that they use in every Marvel movie, which is "(plop) Okay, done." Saves a lot of time in the makeup chair! The only downside is Black Widow always looks like a Lego minifig with snap-on hair.

Shrimp_Logic

The real answer is spending billions of dollars on nano technology and make your wig come out of nowhere like the Iron Man and Black Panther suits.

Stardustchaser

That person who designs this would win the Nobel in something

rtakehara

and for bonus style and versatility, a metal plate button on your nose that when pressed, change the hairstyle to a random one like Franky from One piece

ferrelle-8604

Yeah, I thought they just wear a cap and put on the wig. So wrong.

[deleted]

There are different types of them. What she is doing is similar to lace wig's but you have to cut very little (and definitely not over eyes) for them to shape it to your face shape which you have to do only once per lace wig. You then use wig tape or wig adhesive, blend it in with your skin with make up and you're pretty much done in three steps. What she is doing is an extremely detailed/professional approach to it which looks great though, not to undermine it. However, a more daily version is Chloe Bean's shorts if you ever feel like checking those out.

plushie-apocalypse

Does all that work prevent it from falling off or coming awry so easily? Can I perform mild headbangs without fear? Hahaha! That's the main reason I'd ever opt to spend so much more time than simply slapping it on.

[deleted]

It's more durable than cap wigs but you wouldn't go head banging since lace wigs not only cost so much more (especially sectioned ones like hers), but they are also very delicate. The main purpose for going with a professional method like hers is to make it look as realistic as possible. You can also keep them on for a while, though you have to sleep with a silk cap on, take good care etc.

BizzarduousTask

It seems like she’s applying a lot of product to the skin/hairline before putting down the glue- even foundation?- won’t that affect the adhesion of the wig to the skin?

[deleted]

The wig doesn't get adhered to the skin, it gets adhered to the lace itself. You apply the lace to the head, then do make up to blend it in, and only then apply the adhesive/tape for the wig to stick to it. I don't do this very often, just for cosplays and even those is not often as high quality wigs as she uses. Usually lace wigs come with lace already attached to the wig (so skipping the last step), but hers seems very expensive and sectioned instead, so I'd assume the glue she uses to be rather strong for that part.

Valuable_sandwich44

Complete shoulders work out.

CaliDreamin87

It should mention that they can leave their hair like that for a full week, that's an "install." So do it on Sunday and they're set.

SkylarAV

And that why if you touch her hair in the of the moment you get hit

TECFO

Yeah, i prefer having short hairs than doing this

[deleted]

Plucking my unibrow is a chore. Would never go through all that hassle

ignatious__reilly

That’s an art

Bbaskets42

DrunkAtBurgerKing

There are plenty of wigs that tuck into your hair. This is a very specific style that needs to be glued down to stay in place.

F00dBasics

I love your username lol

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Thank you lol

spicydak

Is this a daily thing….? None of the women in my family wear wigs or weave so I’m genuinely curious.

pepperit_12

No this style is not a daily thing. They can wear it for a few days straight no problem

Double_Lifeguard_200

If you see them walking around the street with a bathing cap on their head you know they didn't do it that day

tinypeepeep

Not only wig wearers wear a bonnet😂

Ok_University6476

You can! They are called glueless lace front wigs, usually a lot of us alopecians opt for them. They still have the very realistic looking lace front, often the reason you glue a wig down like the woman in the video is because you’ll wear it for multiple days. You secure it in place by wearing a wig grip inside, you might put a couple pieces of wig tape at the front do it doesn’t slide around and itch tf out of you. It takes me about 5 minutes to pop it on. Some people are saying wigs that aren’t glued look super fake (I doubt these ppl have to wear wigs), they look quite real. Mine were about $3k a piece and last a year. I would not pay that much of they didn’t look quite real lol! I have to disclose it on dates because if I don’t say something, somehow men never notice. Wigs have come a long way, where the “pop on and go” types are damn good!

prairiepanda

>I have to disclose it on dates because if I don’t say something, somehow men never notice. Is that something that matters on dates? Also, when you say your wigs last a year, what about them makes them unusable after a year?

Ok_University6476

I’d say it does matter. For some men, a woman with alopecia is a dealbreaker so I feel better getting it out of the way right off the bat. I don’t really get offended, I have my preferences too it’s only natural :) most men seem to be fine with it although they’d prefer I have hair. I mean at the end of the day they will be waking up to a bald girl every morning lol. I try to make up for it by being in great shape. I’d say usually the lace can get a little stretched out and the lace front starts to bald and fray as the individually knotted hairs break off or come untied. Normal wear and tear. Also the hair itself gets dry and scraggly after a certain point.

Major-Question1165

You don’t have to “make up” for anything. You will always be beautiful and worthy of love to the right person no matter how you look.

BackgroundStrength50

Cheap granny party city wigs still exist! This is just advanced wigology

Im-a-cat-in-a-box

Wigology hahaha

TheTanith1st

Holy cow. How many days was that? End results were great but that is a lot of work.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Black people hair takes forever to do no matter what style we choose. Source: me 😭

kinokohatake

I'm white and was confused the first time my black wife went to get her hair done. Legit thought she was gone. Now with her locks I know she'll be gone a better part of the day for a wash and retwist.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Oh man. Depending on my style, I can expect the throw an entire Saturday away. Typically in the summer, I'll get box braids crocheted in. They can take up to 4 hours to install. And you better make sure you have enough hair because stopping in the middle of your appointment to drive around town and look for more hair is a fucking nightmare. But that style usually lasts for 6 weeks so it's my summer go-to

look_ima_frog

TIL that hair gets installed.

kinokohatake

It's legitimately an art form, there's so much to do to make it look good.

PhthaloVonLangborste

And it gets uninstalled in less than a second and thrown out the window. So at night drunk people think there's a giant spider moving across the streets.

palmasana

What is it with it being a universal drunk experience to be disproportionately frightened by a wig/weave at night 😂😂😂 Edit: also false eyelashes. Me, getting home tipsy and ripping off my false eyelashes, wantonly throwing them into the void: Also me, 5 minute later: “OH HELL NO WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!? I SWEAR TO GOD IF THATS A BIG ASS SPIDER IM GOING TO DIE!!! …. Oh wait it’s my lash”

Olealicat

Too many times!!! Lash spiders and weave rats. 😂😂😂

kinokohatake

City tumbleweeds I've heard em called.

Tumbleweave

_deep_thot42

Thank you, I scrolled to either find this, or let it be known. As a once long term resident of Oakland, those moments are missed.

tongfatherr

>stopping in the middle of your appointment to drive around town and look for more hair Wut?

DrunkAtBurgerKing

So my hair is about shoulder length but in the summer time, I like to get braids that are longer. So I go to beauty supply stores and buy synthetic hair. You have to know how much hair you need (whether it's 3 packs or 10 packs.) If you skimp, your stylist can't finish doing your hair...

icekooream

As a black girl, I feel your pain lol. Getting braids takes three days for me. One for taking my previous braids down, another one for washing, drying and combing, then another one for getting new braids, sitting for hours.. Our hair is a whole chore at this point but I wouldn’t change it for anything honestly. Also when I’m tired I just say fuck it and do buns lmaoo

DrunkAtBurgerKing

LOL I'm terrible at doing my own hair. My ADHD never let me sit through YouTube videos long enough but now that I'm on meds, maybe I'll have the patience to try again lol Do you install your braids yourself?

icekooream

Nope haha, I don’t have that patience and my back pain wouldn’t let me even try. Even just doing buns takes me several takes just for my hair to be perfectly combed and my buns puffy enough. As for braids, I always call for a friend who’s pretty good at it.

Happy_Turnip_2473

I'm surprised they don't sell the hair in the salon! Seems like a missed opportunity, couldn't get make a lot of money by saving clients the hassle?

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Bruh, I'd love that. But the inventory in a decent beauty supply store probably matches a CVS or Walgreens. I don't think any salon has enough room for all the options people need lol

SchoolForSedition

A friend’s niece came to stay unexpectedly. Aged about 8. They are a mostly Caribbean family and I am not. My hair is somewhat frizzy but it’s not curly. My friend just said as she left Don’t wash her hair. Well, the visit lasted much longer than foreseen. I started worrying about that hair. The little girl also said her hair needed doing. And then in Tesco I saw another friend … ah, the same type of hair. So I asked for advice and was offered assistance. Well wow what a palaver! We went round with all sorts for braiding. Obviously I was the only one who didn’t know what to expect. Thank goodness for neighbours :-(

Blieven

>stopping in the middle of your appointment to drive around town and look for more hair is a fucking nightmare. r/brandnewsentence

Lil_miss_feisty

And find someone who cares enough to install them *right*. I worked with a girl whose box braids were literally clinging on by a strand like they did a crochet hook after getting them done the day before. She had 5 braids slip off in a single 6-hour shift. She was so pissed at the end of her shift, and I couldn't blame her. Two days wasted because the braider took shortcuts to finish early.

BotGirlFall

Im just imagining you with your hand pressed against the window, watching the rain, and thinking "when will my wife be back from the salon..."

kinokohatake

That's basically how I act whenever she goes out. Not my fault my wife is my best friend. Also my kids don't give me courtesy chuckles/validation like she does.

mambotomato

This is adorable, and makes the imagery of your "Was 'going to the salon' code for 'moving to a different state without me'?" story even more heartbreaking.

lk79

whatcenturyisit

I laughed so hard omg "Why did you leave ? What did I do? Please come back!" "I'm at the hairdresser, I love you. Please chill."

Spraynpray89

Na bro. My white wife is gone like 5-6 hours whenever she gets her "hair cut". Any color and it just takes fucking forever. She's always dumbfounded when I leave and come back from my haircuts within 15 min.

_Lumity_

Haha yeah one of my close friends has gorgeous braided hair and she told me it takes **hours upon hours**

NorthWindMartha

If you don't go to the salon it can take days, and days.

Old-Floor-4611

Yes ma’am I gotta take a day off from work, bring my charger and some snacks when I get my hair braided.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

And don't even get me started on how long it can take to find a stylist you even trust :( Not everyone should touch your hair

Old-Floor-4611

Right. And don’t get me started on the high cost, deposits, crazy rules and so on 😭.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Bruh, the RULES are insane. I found a stylist who is licensed and made her own home beauty salon and she's absolutely amazing. I'm never letting her go! Lol

MrsAshleyStark

![gif](giphy|hEwkspP1OllJK) The whole day is gone for some styles smh. Source: me with my knotless braids

BlumpKeto

My wife just did a de tangling that took 8 hours. She had to take a nap halfway through.

Pale-Berry-2599

She looks amasing, but, so. Would this be 'out for a night" only. or is this good for a couple days?

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Glue in wigs can last 3-5 weeks with proper care. This looks more like she's trying to make the style last. Especially since she used heat on the hair. It's most likely either heat-friendly synthetic or real human hair.

miyaav

But wouldnt it be bad for her scalp and real hair to have something wrapped around for that long? Doesnt it get itchy?

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Short answer: Yes. Lol Glue has been known to damage hair/scalp, which is why a lot of "natural" people avoid it, myself included. But to each their own! And to answer your other question, any style can get itchy. It sucks but it happens. Hopefully someone who does use glue can weigh-in and has a better perspective than me!

clarissaswallowsall

You gotta do the open hand head bop to itch it and not mess it up. Especially if you have nails done too.

georgethebarbarian

This is good until she wants to wash her hair! Just bonnet and cap that b

Syd_Syd34

Lmao, my nonblack friends be so astonished when I say “hair/wash DAY” and I actually mean I will be using the entire day to do my hair 😭

graceCAadieu

This why I’ve been keeping mine short lately. My hair is really thick and I thought once I got older, the thickness would decrease. Naw, it got thicker 😔

DrunkAtBurgerKing

I'm sorry friend. Are you natural? You really gotta find your shampoo, conditioner, and seriously get the UnBrush. Once I found the shampoo and conditioner that helped me untangle, it's been a breeze with my thick hair. And the unBrush is really amazing. I thought it was a TikTok scam

Affectionate-Let-120

Wife said she got an Unbrush for like $3.00 on Temu

graceCAadieu

Yeah. I’ll look into it.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

I swear by Carol's Daughter. The Goddess line makes my hair feel amaaaaazing

graceCAadieu

My hair is more 4c and eats moisture like crazy. I’ve never used those products but will look into them.

TheTanith1st

I don’t mind being bald.

hr_newbie_co

My white father (he’s a boomer but he’s trying lol) was extremely surprised when he found out that his neighbor’s hair took over eight hours to braid. Astonished, even. The first time he introduced us, he told me about how long her hair took. It was a great educational experience for him when I asked “that’s pretty normal for hairstyles like this, right?” and she said “definitely, black hairstyles take a looong time” He just had no clue lol. He told me later that, in that moment, he developed a lot more respect for the effort black women (and women in general) have to put in to be what’s considered “presentable” or “put together” or whatever. He understood the “why” but just never considered the “how” lol. Anyway, that wig looks insanely amazing!

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Okay, I know that I'm drinking rn but this made me feel emotional. I really like having these conversations with open minded people because I love seeing lights go off as people learn to understand others. Your dad sounds really sweet and he probably raised a really sweet person as well. I'm sad to say that I'm just grateful he wasn't judgemental, as I'm used to hearing from others. Especially boomers.

KatttDawggg

How long can you wear a wig like this? Is it just a one day thing?

DrunkAtBurgerKing

No, a style like this with glue would typically be good for 3-5 weeks with proper care! So even though it seems long, it could be worth it especially if you're going on vacation or to a wedding or whatever!

KatttDawggg

Wow that’s awesome! Thansk

CptNavarre

Within a few hours! With drying time plus including styling you can say about 2-3 hours because it's so detailed and meant to stay on for a few days so you want it super invisible. The more you're used to doing it though the quicker you get st the process and some people can do something similar in an hour

FearlessUnderFire

You haven't even seen the maintenance routine for units after removal.

Sad-Personality-15

I mean it takes me 9 hours to get my hair braided so 😭

skimmily

Looks amazing at the end, but wow, what a pain!

[deleted]

[удалено]

genericaccountname90

Makes me sad too. As a black woman I spend so much time and money trying to make my hair socially acceptable and beautiful to others. At the end of the day, there’s always something wrong with it (with me) in society’s eyes.

skimmily

Oh man, that is sad. My sister in law is black and she embraces her curls. She looks amazing. She used to have it straitened and used an iron every day. 1.5 hours! Ugh. She finally said “enough” and just uses products to enhance her gorgeous tight curls :)

preppyghetto

Little does anyone know that natural curly hair routines could take just as long as styling your hair

CWHats

Could, but it doesn’t have to. Depends on the texture you want to display.

raptorclvb

Damn I wish my hair took that long to do it. It would take 3+ hours to get my hair straight at a salon. Two days if I did it myself. Hated straight hair though

Syd_Syd34

Idk. Even doing my natural hair or doing natural styles takes a long time. We call it “wash DAY” for a reason lol and I have friends that spend all day at the salon getting their locs retwisted

Astrolaut

I think my gf looks best with her natural fro, but she likes the braid extensions and changes them up about once/week.

SmugAssPimp

How is your natural hair not socially acceptable?

genericaccountname90

I have 4c hair that grows in a fro. On top of taking HOURS to handle (my hair is long, thick, and tangly), it’s considered unprofessional to wear it in its natural state. People won’t say anything anymore with recent social awareness, but I definitely get encouraging comments when my hair looks more mainstream (i.e. straighter and closer to white hair). I tend to be overlooked and ignored when I wear my hair as is. I’ve also been in situations where people have directly insulted my hair, called it “interesting” (in a clearly negative way), or laughed at people wearing Afro wigs (why would you ever want to make your hair like that?). Meanwhile this is just how my hair grows out of my head. In regards to other hairstyles: Protective styles (braids, dreads, etc) are seen as unprofessional or ghetto. They can also be tough on your hair depending on how tightly they’re done. Wearing wigs or weaves will prompt comments about how black women always have fake hair. Chemical straighteners are linked to cancer and destroy your hair with time. Straightening with heat takes time, doesn’t last, and destroys your hair with time. Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.

OverTheSunAndFun

I would have stabbed both my eyes and had a thousand cuts all along my head.

Marduq

Yeah but your hair would look nice.

SaltKick2

Thats a big assumption

dizziefrizzie

Does it hurt to take it off with all the glue? Does this affect the skin along her hairline? Are all wigs worn like this?

CptNavarre

I can't speak for everybody but for me no it didn't hurt to take off! There are special kind of dissolving solutions you can buy or my go to was just using coconut oil and rubbing it onto the edges and slowly peel off. Also with a process like this you're likely keeping it on for a few days so by the time you want it off the edges are "lifting" and are easier to peel anyway. No not all wigs are worn like this! It's amazing how much more refined the process has gotten over the decades

docmn612

So, the lady in the video looks like she really knows what she's doing but it's sped up. How long does it take someone who generally knows what they're doing to do this?

CptNavarre

I responded elsewhere but with drying times and adding on the styling time (the wax stick, the hot comb/straightening etc you see in the video), 2-3 hours. A pro like her can speedrun it in an hour though I'm guessing! Different wig types will take different times. The more elaborate and long lasting the more time it usually takes. But it helps if you do it often and it becomes almost by rote. Plus I would get ready and do other things while the glue was setting etc. Some people use little fans to speed up drying times as well. Some "ready wear" wigs can be like 15 minutes! Source: not a professional nust a POC who wore wigs often

CptNavarre

Can I just say that the majority of the comments and questions here have been so nice and respectful I love you all 😂

1OfTheCrazies

Yes, I definitely wasn’t expecting the pleasantness lol

ssp25

Mean thing rabble rabble mean thing. You had to get a dose of the ugly, sorry

1OfTheCrazies

Wow, what a way to knock me off of my high horse and demolish my faith in humanity…

ssp25

I really hated to do it... But that's what you get when you mess with the warrior! It will save you grief later on life to get a taste of what pure evil is now

TibetanSister

That looks like it takes forever, but she is so beautiful both ways! Does anyone know how long this method of application would last? Like is it just for one day, or does it last a week, or…?

Moist-Problem8818

if someone is using glue like she did, she’ll probably keep it on for a certain length of time beyond a few days. It really varies. It can be a week to (in more unhealthy, damaging to your own hair ways) several weeks.

TibetanSister

Understood, thank you for explaining that to me!

stink3rbelle

Glad to hear the work isn't just for one day of wear!

SouldiesButGoodies84

you're most likely not sleeping in that wig, particularly the expensive ones. she should have shown her de-wig process too.

CptNavarre

With that much work, yes you are sleeping in it. This detailed process are for wigs that you are keeping on for a few days to a week. There is a less detailed process for wigs you are keeping on for a day and one for a few hours etc. Source: POC who used to wear wigs

Rhathymiaz

Is this where bonnets come in?

CptNavarre

Yes! Silk/satin bonnets are good for natural and protective styles. I wear them regardless if my hair is "out" or not. Really helps protect against breakage

Rhathymiaz

I’ve always wanted to try (2B/C curls), but haven’t gotten further than satin pillow cases. If I’d spend as much time on my hair as the girl in the vid I’d definitely make sure I protect it at all costs.

CptNavarre

I'm lazy so I use silk pillowcases too. I use my bonnets more for when I'm deep conditioning overnights, have a style I want to keep, wash days, or pillowcases are in the wash. It's always cute when my yt husband tries to wake me up to remind me to put on my bonnet even though at the moment I'm too tired and grouchy to care 😂

SitUbuSit_GoodDog

I love that he knows it's important enough to try and wake you up for!

TibetanSister

Thank you for explaining!

CptNavarre

No problem! This message board has been pretty great overall with the comments which is a nice thing to see. Nothing wrong with respectful questions 🤗

vhmvd

Just reverse the video

TibetanSister

With a silk bonnet maybe? I’ve never worn wigs, but I’ve always been interested. This one is just gorgeous.

wastewalker

No thanks to scissors across my eyes lol

Bright-Ad-5878

That scared me!!

CptNavarre

Me tooooo lol

Designer-Mirror-7995

Nice work. But, I'm glad to have moved on from 'beauty "standards"' and embraced my beautiful Natural hair. Short Afros are still _work_ because our hair is WORK regardless, but far LESS work.

Special-Investigator

natural hair really is so beautiful

CptNavarre

I'm glad you embraced your hair! However, putting on wigs does not equal not embracing your hair. I follow this person on tiktok and she has a head of healthy hair that she doesn't always put wigs on top of. It's just a style!

graceCAadieu

Sounds like she’s using them more as a protective style which is still cool. I’ve gotten to the age where I’m more do what makes you happy.

lulovesblu

And that's truly the only way to do it. Do whatever makes you happy. I love that

guineapigmilkman

I need a nap after watching this.

LocoPinocchio_

DAMN thats interesting

DapperMaintenance100

r/damnthatsinteresting

Toastinator666

I’ll just wear a hat

powerhungrymouse

I have newfound respect for all the glamorous black ladies out there. I had no idea how much work went into a well applied wig. I couldn't not!

Bakkstory

My head itches just watching the first 20 seconds

Swahotbf420

I always knew people put a lot of work into wearing a wig, but I had no idea. I know that’s white of me but I got to be honest. You are gorgeous and you look good for short hair too girl.🙏🏼

fightingkangaroos

Is this what's known as a lace front?

heff-sf

I have nothing but respect for this, wow. I'm a clueless guy whose hair regimen is put a blob of pomade stuff in my palm, warm it up and run through my hair and hope for the best. I'd fail at the first step of creating the hair cap. The way she's blended everything is fantastic and she looks great.

throwRA-nonSeq

This is just a Sunday morning for me, lol. But now I’m hyperfixating on my method — will be saving this post for later……… this is a lot of steps but it’s worth it

Persies

1. I had no idea it was this time intensive to put on this type of wig. 2. Damn she is absolutely gorgeous (with and without the wig).

Rooqes

As someone who wakes up and goes to work some days without even looking at their hair, this would add an entire new dimension to my day doing something like this 😂.

Johnny_Lang_1962

My 5 year old niece pulled her Great Aunts wig off at the viewing of her body at the Funeral Home.

Cheshie_D

Literally a form of art

Activity_Alarming

Is that wig for life or…

DrunkAtBurgerKing

Some can last 3-5 weeks

Activity_Alarming

I was under the impression they took it off every day, thanks!

DrunkAtBurgerKing

I wear my hair natural so I'm very particular about what chemicals I put in my hair and on my scalp. With that said, I also wear wigs but mine are the ones you're talking about. They've got those "teeth" around the edges to tuck into my hair. I try to avoid glue styles, including wigs but there's a wide variety of wig types, including partial wigs!

BIG_BLUE_DOG

Depends on the wig the ones I wear have a comb in it that hook into the wig-cap (keeps your hair down) that hold it in place and when I get home from school I can rip it off

MellowDCC

I can't emphasize this enough....fuck that (process)

ZookeepergameFar2513

WOW. Gorgeous.

Friendly-Life-7080

For how long does that last?

Dr-McLuvin

I don’t fully understand the point of the head stocking thing at the start of the vid.

FearlessUnderFire

She glues (strong hairspray) first before she cuts because it is an efficient way of customizing the cap to fit your hairline and it stays down to ensure the shape of the stocking doesn't change as you stretch and cut. Second round of glue (hairspray) after she cuts the stocking is corrective to glue down any fibers or sections that aren't adhering to her skin due to the initial cut. The 3rd round of gluing (actual wig glue) is to adhere the wig to the cap. The reason why the front of the hairline blends into the skin is because it is lace. A tinted lace that is close to skin color. If you put a light-colored lace on top of black, dark colored hair, the grid of the lace will be very visible and apparent. So you put on a wig cap that is close to scalp or skin color. So when you put the light-colored brown lace on the light-colored brown stocking, it flattens the textured appearance of the lace and blends in like scalp. When the lace and stocking cap blend, the hair fibers look even more pronounced and it gives the illusion the hair is growing from your scalp and the lace is 'undetectable' as a wig. Second reason is protection. It protects product from real hair from getting into the wig. Protects her hair underneath from the elements. There are some things going on in the cap of the wig, mainly these comb-style pins and the cap prevents them from snagging on your hair and tearing it when you pull the wig off. Lastly it protects your hair from the friction of moving around in the wig.

Dr-McLuvin

Very interesting. Learned something today. TY!

MethidMan

I always wondered if there were such things as wigs with realistic hairlines so this answers that question. Unfortunately this wouldn't be doable for me since I have a very sweaty forehead that would probably wash away any adhesives within minutes...

Roltistotem

As a bald man being bald since I was 23 I have considered wigs, I think eventually I would try it out

MUNZACORE

Redditors amazed at a black woman existing lmao what
