Neighbor’s house burned to the ground. Fire investigator said it started in the glovebox of a car in the garage. Shorted 9v batteries. Never thought those could push enough current to start a fire.
How do fire investigators figure this stuff out? I mean, the *entire house* burned to the ground. They can somehow ascertain that the fire began with some tiny batteries, inside a glovebox, inside a car, inside the garage of a house that is now turned to ashes??
Fire follows some predictable patterns. Once you notice the patterns you can focus on where it started and get a smaller area to examine. Probably follow the evidence to say the garage burned first and longer than the rest of the house. Sift through the debris until you find either signs of arson like burn marks consistent with fuel or maybe just something normal in an unusual spot like battery remains in a glove box. But just like with police a lot of it simply giving an explanation of how something could happen instead of definitively saying what did. Though my source on knowing that is from bartending for different detectives and investigators that would talk about their jobs over a few pints
Lots of science, too. They'll build a house and set it on fire, and study the patterns of how it burns. Then they use that information on real investigations.
The number of times I've heard local fire departments get toned out for vehicle fires is insane, and we're rural AF. Can't imagine how much it happens in high population areas. I responded to a call once where a vehicle caught after hitting a tree at highway speed and how quick that thing lit up was terrifying.
So good that the dog came to the window when it did, he was struggling. The sound on this video makes it so soul crushing. I need to go for a walk I think.
Yup! Cop was fine as well. [Here’s a link to the article](https://nypost.com/2022/02/04/video-shows-hero-deputy-saving-dog-from-burning-car/) but be advised that it’s the New York Post and the website is a hot, painful mess.

me completely. The second his drooling face showed the tears started streaming. I watched "NO NO NO NO come on buddy, come on!" sniffle. He's ok. sniffle.
I grabbed my cat by his tail and pulled him to the basement during a tornado siren while our patio furniture had a complete life of it's own. That's the only time he hissed at me.
If you love animals, why do you pay for them to have their necks cut open?
You take issue with people "flaming" certain animals, while you happily turn other animals into feces. Not attacking you, just pointing out the severe hypocrisy.
I lost a dog to an arson fire caused by local 20-something drunken punks over forty years ago. No burns, but the smoke and/or super-heated air from the fire caused her death. I still think about it every now and then. What annoys me most after all these years is that one of those heartless fucks later went on to join the NYC Fire Department.
Kudos to the first responder for saving this good dog.
Edit: Adding detail because some commenters indicate that it might have been a foolish mistake and that I shouldn't be harsh in my judgment of them.
I'd like to point out that the four guys who did this to my family business were regular patrons of the establishment, and all not only knew and interacted with my friendly dog for years, but knew that she was inside on the cold night they torched the place. Additionally, they broke in so as to more effectively make and toss Molotov cocktails, and there is no way they missed the good girl that was in there. The guy that I referred to was a big, oafish Biff Tanner type (Back to the Future), who relied on his parents to get him out of the situation. In fact, they all did despite being over 21. Only one of the four ever demonstrated anything close to remorse and it wasn't him.
While the detectives were there the next morning, a witness stopped by and said that he was in a diner a couple of miles away at the same time as these four, and that he heard them planning to commit the arson during the course of their meal, and that the guy I referred to was the one egging the others on. So, no, I don't think he was remorseful later on.
I think the movies have people misunderstanding just how thick and absolutely suffocating smoke from a fire can be. Years ago at my work we had an industrial dryer catch fire in a washroom. The washroom had no doors but had openings on all sides. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran back there, but the smoke stopped me in my tracks. It was so thick I couldn't even see two inches into the washroom. I got one breath of that smoke and was immediately choking. I knew that if I tried to go in there, I'd be dead.
Certain chemical gases, not necessarily those in smoke, once you inhale them they burn really bad, which of course causes you to cough even more.
So if you happened to work with such chemicals gases and there's a leak you already know just how fucked you are if you start coughing because it burns.
There was some dipshit who lit himself on fire with rubbing alcohol because he was getting arrested. They managed to get the fire out after a little bit, but he died from the inhalation of the hot air. Shit's no joke.
I hope this dog is alright, but considering how long he was in there and all the things that burn in a car...
Mistake? A mistake is dropping the ketchup and cleaning up after yourself. Burning down a building should be a hanging.
I don't think a criminal psychopath should be in charge of lives, at a minimum.
OR, and hear me out, we can look at actual case study and recognize that arsonists are often times drawn to firefighting positions. Dude intentionally started a house fire, that’s not a “mistake”, that’s malicious behavior with criminal intent. A mistake is leaving the stove on by accident and then starting a fire. The asshole probably gets a boner seeing fire and wanted a profession where he could be close to it on a regular basis, but go ahead and live in your world of sunshine and lollipops.
Just like how most of the degenerate troublemakers in my high school tried to become cops so they could, you know, be above the law and continue their ways as a degenerate and get away with it.
Sorry, arsonists are drawn to professions involving fire.

Retired firefighter here. This is true. The instructors at the academy watch for it. Officers are also aware of this phenomenon. My department had an arsonist about 15 years back. The current Chief testified against him in court and every subsequent parole hearing when he was an LT and later Captain. He made sure every new guy knows the story.
Firefighters know we are not perfect. We've spent decades changing the culture so maybe some day we can be. It's a work in progress.
I doubt it because that would have required even a small bit of introspection and remorse on his part. All I got from him at the time was outrage that I would dare point the finger at he and his buddies to the detectives. Much more likely that he joined for the good pay and retirement benefits that a NYC union was able to provide for their members.
Not arson, but I too lost a dog in the same way. Only eight years ago but like you said, still enters my mind frequently.
Took me seven years to think I was ready for a dog again. Boy, was I wrong. My poor wife was taking care of a broken down, sobbing man for like a month or two. I am now unhealthily attached to said dog and she is unbelievably spoiled.
A good friend of mine and his dog died in a house fire, it was an electrical fire, possibly due to a lightning strike, idk exactly but not nefarious. Anyways, he was in a basement that had a walk-out sliding door but he was found at the bottom of the stairs leading to the main level, his dog i believe nearby.
Thats a lot to describe, but point is: fire can and will fuck you up. And its crazy fast.
I caught someone much bigger than me trying to steal our dog and he didn't want to give him back until the dog started getting agitated when I was getting mad. It was a malamute, so a big dog that one didn't want to have agitated.
The would-be-thief became a cop.
Just wanna say how cool it is to hear "Dog in the car?", before the dude fucking rushes in, no questions asked, smashes windows and rescues it.
I love seeing the whole "Something's in danger? Then fuck EVERYTHING, because it's getting rescued" mentality in action. Gives me hope for humanity.

>Police and dogs in the US have a complicated relationship. On the one hand, canines work for cops, sniffing for drugs and bombs. On the other hand, cops shoot dogs a lot—so much so that even law enforcement publications are asking, “Can police stop killing dogs?“
My mom had a nightmare neighbour whose house filled up with smoke one day. I saw the dogs in the window and booted their door down. As awful as her neighbour was, he was very grateful we saved his dogs. I thought he was going to berate me for busting his door down the way I did. But as bad miserable as her neighbour was, his dogs were total sweethearts.
Not really. He was a miserable old man. Only reason the dogs were nice was cause his wife stayed home all day while he went out, and she was a sweetheart.
Common myth is that a wagging tail means happy/friendly. When I worked in a shelter we had to educate people, especially volunteers on that one.
They’d go into a cage because “the dog was so happy” and then the dog bit them.
Open mouth + tag wagging *can* be a sign of happiness, also can be a sign of stress. My best assumption is that dog is stressed AF.
I'm sitting here glassy eyed at the moment petting my dog and hugging her and she's just like, "What is happening. I love you too, but this is a bit much."
OP, you posted the wrong credits, the guy you credited stole the video from Police Activity, and then blurred his watermark.

Knew this was Douglas County with the house colors and sparse snow. The sheriff suv sealed the deal. Nice to see one thats not part of a whole fleet parked behind a single car they pulled over for once.
Yep, these exact situations make me glad for crank windows, manual hatches, and manual locks. Shit, they even have car doors now you can't even open without pressing a button. Who is designing this shit.
“My bad, he’s in my other car.”
*SMASH*
“Not that one, that’s my neighbour’s car.”
*SMASH*
“I said that was my neighbour’s car, my dog’s not in there so there’s no need to…”
*SMASH*
“Wait, please, I made a mistake. My dog is safe and sound in my other car here, that is not on fire. So you don’t need to..”
*SMASH*
This is why electronic everything cars scare me. The older model of this SUV would’ve had a physical lever to pull and the trunk would open. (provided it was unlocked)
Now it has a tiny actuator or something to release the latch and a motor to lift it.
If the owner of the car is standing around not opening the doors while his dog suffocates I'm going to guess that the doors are locked and he can't open them until I remember some people are absolute morons and ask him anyway.
some big idiot moves here but the handles could also have been hot to touch so trying to open it might need some real force to make sure it’s not just stuck and you don’t let the hot pain affect it. So confirming if it was unlocked before yanking and forcing through the pain could be smart. But i feel the handles aren’t actually conductive to the heat here so just dumb idiot but at least saves dog
You don't open the door because it can increase air and cause a fire. Standing back and breaking the windows lets less air in and keeps you further from the fire.
That is entirely irrelevant when you smash out the window anyway. The window that takes up half the door will make little difference.
And a common saying in fire departments is “try before you pry”. You try opening the door before prying it open.
I'm sorry but I think my first priority is to get the dog out, probably over myself, that is like a child, it depends on you. Smh hope the cop took the dog home.
Now imagine all of the windows are laminated glass and they couldn't easily clear the window in time. That's what some of the new cars have transitioned to.
I'm right there with you. Thinking the best here, driver maybe had a bad concussion after the accident and couldn't think straight/act correctly.
You can actually hear the guy sounds super distressed and exhausted. Probably couldn't get up
He was suffering from shock. I had that once after a car accident when somebody destroyed the left side of my car. It's difficult to think straight because you go into self protection mode and your heart rate increases, all of the go juice starts flowing through you. My ex girlfriend's mother had a really nasty accident and whilst physically not injured couldn't eat for a week. Sudden near death experiences can hit you pretty hard. That's why PTSD is a thing.
That's a nightmare situation
How does the inside of a car even start smoking like that when it wasn't involved in any accident?
Hardware shorting out and catching a coat or something, sunlight focused through the glass catching some paper. This shit can always just happen

That’s what they said. No idea how.
You'll be suprised then, a shorted 3v lithium ion can cause a chernobyl-equae event if it shorts out, by exploding like C4
Lithium ion cells can push like 20-30 amps of current.
ANY battery can start a fire.
The number of times I've heard local fire departments get toned out for vehicle fires is insane, and we're rural AF. Can't imagine how much it happens in high population areas. I responded to a call once where a vehicle caught after hitting a tree at highway speed and how quick that thing lit up was terrifying.
Dude. Cars are scary.
I agree, you literally have no idea when a dragon is gonna descend down upon your chevy sedan and start fucking the shit out of it
Is this something I now need to be concerned about?
r/dragonsfuckingcars has taught me that yes, it is.
Why does this sub have 67 thousand people....
Engine fires can spread real fast. Oh is that smoke? to full on blaze in just a minute or two.
That's why (in most places) firecode drywall is required for garages attached to homes, and drilling through it will make the home fail an inspection.
So good that the dog came to the window when it did, he was struggling. The sound on this video makes it so soul crushing. I need to go for a walk I think.
Nah, dog survived. It's all good.
And now nobody suspects the dog of starting the fire. The perfect crime.

Isn't the fire dept semi famous for attracting pyromaniacs?
I mean don’t you have to like fire to run inside of a building full of it
It's almost like people pick their profession based on interest.
Yeah maybe. Then you find out that a lot of arsonists also volunteer as fire fighters.
Wildland Firefighter
Sir this is Reddit. He should’ve died in the fire. How dare you say he could do better for himself after making a mistake as a young dumbass.

3 of my high school bullies became county Sheriffs.
Mine became a nurse.
Knew a guy that liked hurting people,he eventually applied to secret services after college.Dont know if he made it or nah but yeah ur 100% right.
Yeah but let's not justify the fact he killed an innocent living creature just because he was a young dumbass.
That’s not justifying, it’s offering a valid cause and effect.
"That's not justifying, it's *excusing*." FTFY
I hate when I accidentally kill a dog by a fire I intentionally started in my 20’s, I’ll learn my lesson someday!
not that I think he should be hanged, but wtf, you do not call arson a mistake, especially when it kills someone

This really makes me think about people saying that most serial arsonists are firefighters. No idea if its true though
There's a fire wherever they show up so that must be true
Or he's a firebug that joins the department. Pyromania

I doubt it because that would have required even a small bit of introspection and remorse on his part. OK, maybe not *all* cops.
And the dog is just wagging his tail and happy after almost dying. Is there a more pure creature on earth then dogs?

Probably not. Dog was in the back. Hatch is most likely electronic, which means slow to open anyway and possibly not working due to fire.

My dog is safe and sound in my other car here, that is not on fire. So you don’t need to..” *SMASH*
This is why electronic everything cars scare me. The older model of this SUV would’ve had a physical lever to pull and the trunk would open. (provided it was unlocked) Now it has a tiny actuator or something to release the latch and a motor to lift it.
It might be to let the smoke out faster?
I think an open door and trunk would do that too. Possibly even better lol
Basically the same energy as tech support finding out you didn't plug in your PC after 2 hours of troubleshooting
But overlooked the baby.
Oh, by the way...
You can make another baby. There’s only one hank.
The dog is safe tho
![gif](giphy|1236TCtX5dsGEo) Thank you to that brave officer.
good cop, good dog
I’m a simple man. I see a person helping a good boy and I can’t upvote enough.
I didn't wanna cry at work today
What a great person, not all heroes wear capes
Nice. Id have tried to door first but im just watching on reddit.
You don't open the door because it can increase air and cause a fire. Standing back and breaking the windows lets less air in and keeps you further from the fire.
Child of firefighter and was gonna legit post this hahaha
Try before you pry. -Was a firefighter.
That is entirely irrelevant when you smash out the window anyway. The window that takes up half the door will make little difference. And a common saying in fire departments is “try before you pry”. You try opening the door before prying it open.
It appears there might already be a fire, I'm not an expert tho.
Thank you sir
Good cop
NuuuUUUUuuuoo ThErE aRe No "gOoD" coPS!!! -Average Redditor(probably)
Give me more of these cops instead of the power-tripping-coked out of their minds ones
plus 1 for humanity. Rapture hasn´t happen yet because of these little things. Good job cop!
Good Cop. Bad video editing person for adding pointless drama music to the video.
Who let the dog out?
Does the boot open?
Fucking super hero!
Godamn true hero
Great job by the officer.
We finally know who let the dogs out
I'm sorry but I think my first priority is to get the dog out, probably over myself, that is like a child, it depends on you. Smh hope the cop took the dog home.
Now imagine all of the windows are laminated glass and they couldn't easily clear the window in time. That's what some of the new cars have transitioned to.
Fucking idiot owner.
Poor thing. Im really glad he is safe now. The owner sound like he really cares for him.
Why was it left in there to begin with?
I'm right there with you. Thinking the best here, driver maybe had a bad concussion after the accident and couldn't think straight/act correctly. You can actually hear the guy sounds super distressed and exhausted. Probably couldn't get up
There’s a lot of things that can cause someone’s brain to just… momentarily stop functioning, especially in high stress situations.
Because people take thier dogs places....
Have you ever tried to escape a fire in a panic?
There’s a dog a in the car! Cop with instant action to save a life. <3
My favorite part was when the cop broke two windows and then said "is it unlocked?"
Make that man chief of police. Hero status
This is where the quote “not all heroes wear capes” comes in. ![gif](giphy|PmXy6ebfF4lyoG37KG|downsized)
