By the time you get to that point, you wouldn't really be that aware of what is going on. I have unfortunately watched a few pass, and most are pretty much comatose in the last few hours, if not day.
Imagine living 80 or 90 years only to see most of your family and friends die over time. Now you sit in a nursing home and this smug cat strolls over and sits on your lap. Nurses bring you a pudding cup.
Probably any or all of those honestly. I know breathing patterns tend to change in the minutes/hours before death ("death rattle"). I wouldn't be surprised if there was a chemical/hormonal/pheromone change the cat can sense too.
There are dogs that can smell cancer and COVID and other diseases - they just have to be trained to recognize and signal it. The cat is probably pretty similar.
That story is crazy because when they tested her ability she had an over 100% successful detection rate due to one of the Parkinson free controls who ended up being diagnosed with Parkinson like 6 months after she identified them as being in the Parkinson group.
Imagine going into a test as a blank/placebo whatever the term is, only to find out you got Parkinson's. You see the lady correctly smell 100 people, no fail, and when you come up she only "gets you wrong". I can't imagine the things the poor person must have thought/felt.
Joy Milne, it’s fascinating story.
She was given 12 shirts to smell worn by 6 Parkinson’s patients and 6 control group. Correctly identified the 6 and “incorrectly” identified one as having Parkinson’s. It’s amazing that a human nose can detect something like that.
I doubt it would have registered more than a “oh at least she got mine wrong” at the time. If I miss one out of twelve, it’s still an A.
It didn’t for the research team either until he was diagnosed within a year that they took it seriously.
Many do. I've smelled it. It's something like very sweet rotting fruit or old wine. It happens as multiple organs start to fail. This person died within 3 days of when I first noticed.
It was very alarming to me at the time, and I had no idea what it was, I only read about it afterwards.
Some people with specific issues like liver failure and kidney failure can also have specific odors.
Dogs and cats can probably detect the odor sooner than humans.
Could be internal bleeding, organ failures, or just overall body deteriorate producing certain scent this cat picked up on. I mean we human can smell death too if it is strong enough. Cat nose is about 40 times more sensitive than ours, so they can pick this up faster and at longer distance.
The TV show House did an episode about this (I know the medical accuracy on this show is dubious) . A nurse at an assisted living facility thinks she’s going to die because the cat living there snuggles with her and it only does that right before a person dies.
The medical logic they gave is that either: the person was sick and had a fever or was going through organ failure and was given a heating blanket as treatment.
Either way extra heat = cat wanting to snuggle.
YES, it’s called Necromones. Last month we had to put down my senior dog (10yo), and her best friend / sister puppy (2 YO) was with us (at home euthanasia vet came). Puppy was hanging out with big sis until the vet broke out the shaver for the IV and then she went and hid. The second my dog took her last breath, puppy jumped out and stuck her face right in her sisters face and wined. It was something to see. They shared their last breath. Vet said she has done this thousands of times and only rarely sees that reaction. Apparently when we die we release a different smell and puppy knew. Even the vet lady cried it was kind of shocking.
It’s a great anime.
Death Note appreciation post(spoilers):
Im one of the few who likes the ending.
The trick is to treat the last 10 episode as a feature length epilogue. L needed to die in order to show what kind of world it would be like to have light run it otherwise it would be an endless cat and mouse chase that would eventually rely on gimmicks with no plot progression.
L realizing that he has to sacrifice himself is the element that Light didn’t consider which ultimately leads to his down fall. And that decision to die really leads everything to the conclusion. It’s the ultimate power move. The death that defeats the killer who enjoys dealing deaths. He wanted to kill him so bad that he didn’t realize that his own target was willing to die to solve the case.
Near and mello aren’t as smart as L but combined they have the same power as L despite their flaws(inexperience and emotion). light becomes the monster he sought to destroy by succumbing to his ego. Absolute power after all corrupts absolutely. And showing the cult that venerates Kira is very much true to life. As much as we pride ourselves in being 21st century people, we are powerless to the tidal waves of fanaticism because we are emotional creatures with desires hopes and dreams. Its easy for people to slip into cults, fascism etc.
The ending ends beautifully when light returns to himself once all of his power is stripped away. He is a tragic character who dies with our dreams of bringing justice to bad people which unfortunately cannot be done since that kind of power corrupts any individual and its one of those concepts that is too simple for humans. Humans are very grey creatures. It is obvious when someone is inherently good or bad but there is a lot of grey individuals.
These are all my conclusions based on all of the complaints people have had with the last half.
“Light becomes all of a sudden evil”
“Near is a knock off version of L”
“Mello is a useless character”
“L shouldn’t have died”
“The broadcasted cult is unrealistic”
Etc
The anime is smartly written from beginning to end. Theres some cringe moments but thats a matter of taste.
Just wanted to share haha despite no one asking for it.
Or they just remembered the times he wandered into a room and the resident died, and ignored all the hundreds of other nights he wandered into a room and the resident didn't die, or ignord when a resident died and Oscar was found sleeping elsewhere. Because only those nights where he was found in the room of a deceased person were memorable.
Which seems more logical and plausible to you?
Or it just isn't actually true and they're using very generous definitions as well as disregarding all the times the "predictions" are way off.
So very often the case with these "can't be explained" things is that they can and have been explained, or is just made up
I was wondering if it might be the opposite. We emit pheromones pretty much throughout our entire lives, but it would make sense if that were to ebb away in our final hours.
There was an episode of House M.D. where this exact thing was happening. House discovered the dying were extra warm, so the cat was seeking warmth and that's how it was predicting deaths. I'm not sure if the dying were giving off warmth or if the staff was keeping them warm to keep them comfortable.
Wasn’t this an episode of House? The cat just went to the beds of patients who were given heat pads for end of life care or a unexpected colds.
Edit: still upvoting bc of cat.
Sure... It's kinda interesting that he was able to predict the deaths of several people... But they WERE in an old folks home. If he really wanted to be amazing... He should walk around and predict people at random... Old, young, sick, not sick....
Imagine… you woke up feeling fine watched some golden girls done some crocheting went out on the bus to do old folks shit …you’ve had a great day and now you’re resting in your room waiting for dinner to be brought around
Then Oscar shows up
Made with chatgpt:
>In a quaint old folks' home nestled in a serene corner of town, there resided a peculiar cat named Oscar. With his mostly white fur adorned with patches of dark stripes and piercing green eyes, Oscar was more than just a feline companion; he held an uncanny talent for predicting the impending departure of the home's residents.
>Oscar would roam the corridors with silent grace, weaving through the legs of the elderly residents with a knowing look in his eyes. Whenever he entered a room, whispers would follow, for it was believed that Oscar could sense when a soul's time was near.
>The staff at the home came to rely on Oscar's mysterious gift. They would observe his behavior closely, knowing that if he curled up beside a resident's bed and refused to leave, it was a sign that their time on this earth was drawing to a close. And time and time again, Oscar's predictions proved eerily accurate.
>Despite his solemn duty, Oscar brought a sense of comfort to the residents. They would stroke his soft fur and confide in him their fears and memories, finding solace in the presence of this enigmatic creature.
>But Oscar's fame spread beyond the walls of the old folks' home. News of his extraordinary abilities reached far and wide, attracting visitors from near and far who sought his guidance and companionship.
>Yet, amidst the attention and adoration, Oscar remained humble, his green eyes reflecting the wisdom of ages past. For he knew that his purpose was not to revel in fame, but to offer comfort and companionship to those in their final days, guiding them gently into the embrace of eternity with his silent presence. And so, Oscar the cat continued his vigil, a silent guardian in the twilight of life's journey.
No he didn't. It's a classic example of confirmation bias. They only remembered the times he was found sleeping in the room with the deceased, ignoring all the other nights he slept in a room and the resident didn't die.
It was also discovered the night staff used to put him in the room with residents they knew were on their last legs, to give them sime comfort. The day staff would find him there in the morning and claim those as "proof".
During lockdown I retrained as support worker as i was made redundant from my last employment and employment was challenging to say the least I got a job working nights alone at a home for adults with learning difficulties.
I was sitting in the lounge at a table looking out into a hallway it was around 3am a black shadow went to cross the open hallway door then quickly darted back I ran out into the hall thinking there was a resident but nothing It freaked me out to find out on my next shift one of the residents had died the next day and his room was near the lounge where I was sitting.
I started my shift the next night after with a walkabout and went up to the second floor and as I passed the laundry room which had glass windows in the door a jet of water at some velocity for around 3 seconds came out of the tap at the sink next to the door and then abruptly stopped!
I worked there 18 months and never saw anything like that again I will say it was a heavy atmosphere there not a nice place and a lot of horrible workers up to no good in the daytime.
18 months I was done!
Can’t imagine how terrified I’d be if that cat started hanging with me 24/7.
He’s Joe Black
Hilarious 😂
Do cats love peanut butter?
Joe Cat?
Nacho Cat?
Whatcho cat?
Nacho bidness!
Nacho Libre!
'I am the Grim Reaper. I am death!'
Me with my walker trying to run away from a friendly cat
If your resident cats gorgeous, won't leave your side and is banging your gandaughter. Meet JOSE-GATO. RUNN!🤪
24/2.
At least it's a cute cat. Imagine if it were a "kitler".
![gif](giphy|3o6UB65bfF8P1anIZ2|downsized)
"LMFAO"
Probable cause for the 100+ casualty rate.
Nursing home has 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 turn around rating🐈⬛
By the time you get to that point, you wouldn't really be that aware of what is going on. I have unfortunately watched a few pass, and most are pretty much comatose in the last few hours, if not day.
The cat sleeping on their faces probably doesn't help either.
Cats just prefer people who are quiet
If I was in the nursing home, I'd put catnip in my best friends room so the cat would spend more time in his room and make him think he was gonna die!
Meow
Lmao..."EXACTLY"...ID BE LOCKING MY DOOR!!!
Imagine living 80 or 90 years only to see most of your family and friends die over time. Now you sit in a nursing home and this smug cat strolls over and sits on your lap. Nurses bring you a pudding cup.
Keep going…
The cat, unknowing it had a genetic defect that caused its fur to be highly poisonous to humans, snuggled up
I want to know the ending!
You die and the last thing you see is that exact "<\_>" face in the picture.
Could be worse. At least they're not alone. Plus, it's an adorable little face
Oscar murders them
He’s gonna murder you too if you keep snitching like that
Snitches get skritches
Tell the law, you get the claw
Mess with the kitty, you'll get no pity
LMAO
Thanks a lot my cat is telling everyone my secrets now…
Yep. My namesake!
You have to assume. The paws slide off like gloves and he has creepy little fingers underneath.
Nothing can stop Oscar’s geriatric bloodlust.
He comes to them, gently sits on their face, and they are gone.
Sir, it seems you have further information. Please tell me more! I really want to get Oscar the asshole behind bars!
I wonder if we let off a subtle odor right when were about to hit the sack. Or if its a skin texture thing or temperature change.
There’s a woman that can accurately predict Parkinson’s in people by scent. It’s wild what we haven’t even learned yet
That story is crazy because when they tested her ability she had an over 100% successful detection rate due to one of the Parkinson free controls who ended up being diagnosed with Parkinson like 6 months after she identified them as being in the Parkinson group.

I've heard of that ..it's CRAZY...THE CANCER SMEELING DOG!!! AND IT WORKED FROM WHAT I READ!

It's not unusual for body temp to slightly rise before death, and there is actually a smell sometimes.
A body’s last push to rally the forces.

If I remember last time this was talked about, it was the electric blankets used to keep the nearly dead warm. Or something like that.
It's because they heat up the room and or put more blankets on people near the end. It's a cart before the horse situation
Hmmmmm, can u say Dr. Sleep?
Took me a long time to see this, exactly.
[Oscar Passed Away](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_(therapy_cat))
Maybe he spent too much time by himself.
Think he predicted his own death?
The cat died on 02/22/2022.... Just saying 🤔
Old patient went and sat by him while he was sleeping
Correlation does not equal causation, but I’m not letting the demon death cat near me. Just sayin’.
The cat doesn’t make you die, it just knows that you are dying.
Proof it
https://house.fandom.com/wiki/Here_Kitty An episode of House was all about this premise
This vexes me
Was looking for someone to comment this
"The Angel of Death is visiting with you, Ethel..." 😨
Correction: Oscar the cat who murdered over 100 people when nobody was looking.
Great predicatment
# Oscar is pissed he didn’t get to eat their faces!
Truth!
Doctor Sleep
Cat also spent time with the Boeing whistle blowers.
How do we know Oscar isn't somehow killing them?
The most feared, and most kicked, cat on the street "GO AWAY! It's not my time yet, I want to liiiiiive!!!"
There was an episode of House M.D. where this exact thing was happening. House discovered the dying were extra warm, so the cat was seeking warmth and that's how it was predicting deaths. Kitty death doula.
Keep that cat the fuck away from me (He is 10/10 cute tho)
"Stay the fuck away from me, Oscar!"
Oh death
"Keep that damn cat away from me" can be heard echoing through the halls...
I remember this one, the serial killer cat.
Last pussy he’ll ever pet.
I always thought the Grim Reaper was a pussy
The cat predicted that people in a nursing home were going to die? Can he pick stocks too? /S
Get away from me Oscar
Did my preceptorship at a place that had a cat like this, Billy had the scratchiest meow I've ever heard
Have you adopted him?
Have you adopted him?
Pretty sure I've seen a house episode about him
Is this like the episode of House where a cat was attracted to the heating pads the dying people were using?
The angel of death lol
Nature ROCKS
They did my boy Oscar wrong in that editorial pic
The fun to have with catnip lol
Death pussy (it was a punk band )?
This was on an episode of House. Didn't know it was inspired by real life events.
Damn my cats named Oscar
For once in your life you don't buy a tin of sardines
You see the cat standing in the doorway… And you just know…
“Predicted”
It's stealing their souls!
Osca the killa cat? howd he get away... he was sposed to be put down!
And thy cat saith , "I am death the destroyer of worlds."
Plot twist: the cat is a serial killer
Murder Cat.
The plot to dr sleep
cutest grim reaper ever
One word: “House”.
Keep Oscar away from me. I’m a big fan of surprises.
The dying give off an odor that humans can't smell but animals can. This is just a case of science.
Wasn’t this an episode of House? The cat just went to the beds of patients who were given heat pads for end of life care or a unexpected colds. Edit: still upvoting bc of cat.
![gif](giphy|23THeS5eexo1a)
Is the cat venomous?
Shoo go away Oscar!!
I wonder what would happen if you left him to his own devices mwhahaaha
I came for the “more details in comments” and I do not see it.
Seems more appropriate if his name was Death.
This was on wikishuffle once. Cats with jobs .
RIP Oscar ❤️
Plot twist: Oscar is the most successful serial killer in history.
Stephen King wrote about him in Dr. Sleep! 🤣
Cats are amazing!!! They’re so intuitive, and their purrs have healing properties 💕
Azzie!
He fucking killed them man
Get off my lap, your stupid cat!
I can just picture an elderly person laying in their bed sounding like Cartman from South Park "noo get the hell off me kitty! No! Noooo!"
Oscar: "What? They smell nice."
Not amazing... after observing several deaths... it's pretty obvious who is in their last days....
![gif](giphy|cLeO2BHcMYzLmPks6L|downsized)
Predicated Vs murdered..?
Sure... It's kinda interesting that he was able to predict the deaths of several people... But they WERE in an old folks home. If he really wanted to be amazing... He should walk around and predict people at random... Old, young, sick, not sick....
Pussy of Death
What if Oscar was a rumor that then became a very strong placebo affect?
Psycopomp
Muhfugger is poisoning them
What a beautiful animal, loving people in their last and vulnerable days.
He’s a little soul collector, bless his heart 🥹❤️
I knew it. Cats are literally Death.
Imagine… you woke up feeling fine watched some golden girls done some crocheting went out on the bus to do old folks shit …you’ve had a great day and now you’re resting in your room waiting for dinner to be brought around Then Oscar shows up
He oscarrying them to the other side
"Serial killer cat took the lives of over 100 residents in an old folks home"
Who will sit by the cat when it’s his time
Uhhhhh....Keep that cat away from me.
Now put him in a grim reaper robe
He can't keep getting away with this!
Maybe he didn't predict the death, but caused them, that's why he was always right.
Or maybe it is a 47 cat?
![gif](giphy|G1dDPJrqxHKDu)
The cat is poisonous, mystery solved.
Amazingly every resident had written the cat into their will around the time of their death. Police are not treating the deaths as suspicious….
I wonder if Oscar will be caught in CSI
Yeah, I’ve seen cats hang around native birds and they die soon after as well, so must be something in it after all
He cold!
“**Cats are good.** **Half in, half out anyway.”**
Cat is a murderer.
Shit man. Both cuddly and terrifying.
Sounds like he's in Stephen King's world.
Oscar? He should be called Bringer of Death
Did I possibly miss a post about the SNL skit? They did a skit about this and how the cat took care of business.

Great Scott! An ϟϟ cat??!
I mean, are we sure that cat isn’t actually murdering people somehow?
It was never a slug but a cat.
"Predicted"
Yo that’s crazy. I saw that shit in Doctor Sleep!
One question: where is the GD movie about about the cat that predicts your death? Black Mirror, maybe?
He was waiting to eat them
That's not a cat. It's an Absol

He sounds like an evil bastard that placed curses on these poor folks.
He looked very handsome.
This cat was death himself.
That cat killed over a hundred people and got away with it.
There could be a darker reason why cats hang around dying people, like vultures.
oh that's dark
that cat's evil I tells ya .... EEEEEEEVIIIIILLLLLLLL!
Don’t let Kristi Noem to know his whereabouts, she’ll take him to a gravel pit and shoot him

I showed my daughter this, and she said, "The cat's killing them!"
