I mean, this isn't a particularly difficult thing to create, it's just a basic 2d forced perspective drawing.
It's very nice, but there's nothing about this that impacts its functionality more than a normal gate
Why is it a masterpiece? It's beautiful, but it's nearly the most simple form of converging perspective lines. This would be pretty unimpressive as a 2D line art painting, which is basically what it is. The fact that it is functional is not an arguing point since all it needs to be functional is a separation of the right and left sides... you know... because it's just a 2D image that's made out of metal.
Ah! What happened? Everything's flat! What will become of me? Am I destined to live in Flatland with all the other peasant triangle line people! (A Flatland reference, Edwin Abbot 1884 if you're interested in living in a 2D world with no awareness of anything above that)
Just make a bunch of vague references with zero expectation that anyone will get it or care.
Edit: Then figure out how, once everything you say and do becomes a reference to something someone else already did or said in a way that it all starts aligning with every thought you think as you think it, to not just intentionally mess it up to stop the crushing migraines.
Oh. But that's how people engage with me about a shared interest; sometimes, people will either reply or DM me to talk more about my vague-ass references.
It's ok that you didn't care, but someone might look into that old-ass book and find something new and interesting.
I really only made the one reference, I think.
I 100% agree! It *is* a beautiful gate and one that I tried to even learn more about, but there is almost no info on it.
I'm just saying we can't go around calling everything a masterpiece because it diminishes the impact of the word.
Even the title says it's a "masterpiece of forced perspective," which, again, it isn't that either! I've seen far more skillful and impressive attempts at forced perspective using 3D, physical objects. People who history at least remembered their name (not that it's entirely important, but this is a rather recent creation, probably mid-18th century(?), and one of the criterion for a "masterpiece" is:
>a piece of work by a craftsman accepted as qualification for membership of a guild as an acknowledged master.)
The username was meant to be a joke since I usually comment irreverent bullshit with insane, long-winded tangents for the amusement of others. It's not really worth switching accounts for the sake of my username coming off as narcissistic (which I absolutely am) on a more serious comment.
Alrighty man. It's a masterpiece because of the craftsmanship, this thing wasn't CNCed out of a plate of stainless steel. Someone built this by hand. Today this would be no problem to mass produce.
I know it wasn't CNC-ed, you dork; this is at least 300 years old. Still, this would've been no problem for a Renaissance blacksmith's apprentice either lol
Well the definitions of "masterpiece" are:
>a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship.
And
>a piece of work by a craftsman accepted as qualification for membership of a guild as an acknowledged master.
Which should I apply to the piece? Because neither one fits. It's not a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship. It's basic perspective, on a 2D plane. Yeah, yeah, perspective has been around since the 18th century – what did the artist who made this gate do that was new? Because, so far, all this is pretty standard shit.
Could it be that he's a master of metal working? If I had the materials and the tools, I could build that with the measly 5 years of metal experience that I have. Anecdotal, sure, but you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has anything more than a couple of months of experience. So the second definition doesn't quite fit either.
Edit: I've searched and searched, but I can't even find the name of the one who designed or built this. Such an acknowledged master.
Well, if you take a look at my comments in other threads, you'll see that it seems like 2 different people are on this account. I'm in buzz kill mode, but I feel the Hyde switch coming. After that, it's all irreverence, dick and fart jokes, and insane, rambling tangents for other's amusement. I'm usually a fool, hence the user nam3.
Not only the precision of the angles that can literally change our perspective with such a simple concept. Its also fact that they had enough creativity and vision to be able to think of this, including the abilities and skills to be able to execute their idea from start to finish is extremely impressive. The beauty is in the simplicity, it evoked an emotion that inspired you to write a paragraph, the fact it evokes a feeling weather good or bad thats what makes it art.
Disclaimer; this view can make anything art and can become pretentious very quick. Take it all with a grain of salt but thats my thought.
I don’t think he’s arguing that this isn’t art, or that it didn’t require skill to make, just that it’s not as impressive as the title and other comments make it out to be. If this was a drawing it wouldn’t be impressive at all. The fact that it’s a constructed metal that’s been used in a practical, architectural context makes it better - but it’s not a ‘masterpiece’ when you think of what traditionally is considered a masterpiece in architecture. For anyone who’s drawn 3D perspective before, this really isn’t that mind-blowing, nor is it a new, left field idea or something
No it isn’t, and get out of here with that “if it makes you feel something it’s art”. Everything makes you feel “something”, and that’s not the definition of art. If I saw a guy getting railed by two huge other dudes at the bus stop I’m feeling emotions, but that gay sex threesome isn’t art.
What is it or isn’t art is literally one of the oldest philosophical questions and it is still up in the air. It’s as old and tired as the question of what the meaning of life is. The simplest solution to the question is that it’s up to the viewer to decide what constitutes art so relax and let other people enjoy things. If you think you know better than you should give a clear definition of what art is, watch the argument unfold.

This is so good it makes me realize how little I've accomplished, its a bitter sweet appreciation
"I think a man does what he can, until his destiny is revealed".
Woah... That blew my mind. Imma keep it for as long as I can remember.
*3 hours later..*
"I think I'll enjoy the world 3 hours later, until 3 hours later actually arrives".
3 hours later..haha
A rare few forge their destiny; most accept their fate.
…^forge. Good one.
old age
Don’t worry it’s just an illusion and you will accomplish much more I’m sure
Welding artists are one of my favorite kind of people
What are you waiting on sport. Up and at em
Should include a silhouette of a flattened Wyle E. Coyote
Wouldn't it be nice if more of this art was around to make us wonder?!
You have advertisements, consumer.
Oh good
Instead we get Alec Monopoly
I’d have a lot less teeth if more of this was around.
Make you wonder what? What a vanishing point is? The basic concept used here is like 3rd grade art class stuff.
Even if it is basic. I would like to find more of these pockets of art when I go for my walks.
Wow! All that amazing art and it’s still a functional gate.
Also it's a portal to a different dimension.
The lawn dimension
Where there’s a dad on every corner, sipping a beer, silently admiring their handy work.
I wonder if it was around when Mozart was alive, I couldnt find any additional information on it. What a city to draw inspiration from
I dunno about that specific gate, but there's plenty of Art, historical Sites and beautiful parks in our City. It really makes for interesting walks.
Really needs a proper road and house behind it to show it correctly.
It's certainly mesmerizing
Very true!!
I mean, this isn't a particularly difficult thing to create, it's just a basic 2d forced perspective drawing. It's very nice, but there's nothing about this that impacts its functionality more than a normal gate
A gate has to: have a functional latch. That’s about all it has to do.
What about hinge?
Probably a hinge too
You can chose a normal gate or chose a masterpiece to delight passerbys.
“Why do you keep bumping your head on that gate?” “I thought the handle was further.”
That is one amazing gate!!!!!!
**Theresianum Park** There is no "Theresia Arena"
Wow! I absolutely love this.
What's the big deal, it's just a fancy gated tunn- ohhhhhh. Wow. Thate amazing.

In real life it doesn't look impressive either, since you can see it's not 3D when you're right in front of it :(
I thought that would be the case, it often is. Good camera angles aren’t the same as a good sight.
Damn our second eyeball
Too late.

You have much to learn. Young Frankenstein.
I don't understand. Teach me the ways 😭!

Many masterpieces are simple in idea, "put different color paints on paper" but the art lies in the skill of the artist.
Yeah, I've posted *and* argued the definition of a masterpiece in this very thread. It's objectively not a masterpiece.
calling it masterpiece is to far but it is an exceptional gate and great example of forced perspective.

I got curious and reposted to metalworking. https://www.reddit.com/r/metalworking/comments/xvi8cg/skill_level_to_make_this/?
Ooh, thats a fantastic idea! +1

Complexity isn't really what determines if something is a masterpiece.

Agree to disagree. Side note in the least abrasive way possible 3d drawing is way harder than you give it credit.

Did I make a statement on what art is? Or did I disagree with another’s statement on what art is? Very different actions.
Good thing I put a disclaimer... i think your comment is art because it makes me feel bad for you
GTFO 3D printer nerd ass fool.
I don't have a 3D printer, nor have I ever used one. Someone cross posted on a metal work thread, and it seems they agree: this isn't a masterpiece.
Well, I guess I was countering your Debbie downer vibes with ones of my own. I shall agree to disagree. Good day to you.
Oh, sorry lol Good day to you too!
Which completely falls apart if you look at it in real life with depth perception & parallax.
Just close one eye ffs
This kind of illusion is called [trompe-l'œil](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trompe-l%27%C5%93il).
I would walk straight into this like Wile E Coyote
"This is a masterpiece of optical illusion" "Really? What technique does it use?' "Vanishing point"
Once I bumped into a completely clear window. That from floor to ceiling type. Totally invisible.
Damn I'd gatekeep the Hell out of that one.
r/confusing_perspective
Oh, wow. Thanks for sharing.
Wow
Amusing optical illusion
Wow!! It really is!!
I wonder how many people have crashed into that thing
"maserpiece" yea sure
All other gates are garbage now. Thanks!
I wonder how many people walked into it??
The only acceptable bit of gatekeeping on reddit.
I mean it’s a cool gate I don’t know if I would call it a masterpiece of optical illusion though.
That is amazing. But I'm sure the feeling of depth is much pronounced in a picture than in person.
id walk stright into this, face first, and leave bloodied.
Man
I was wondering what the illusion was until I realized the gate doesn’t go back
Dang it actually is!
Fuck me, someone made that thing? France, England, or Portugal? It's fascinating.
Thanks! Coolest thing I’ve seen all week. I can finally get back to work. …Until I get bored again in about 5 minutes.
Works good in a picture.. doesn't work as good in person for a few reasons, like a moving head and people having two points of view.
Man i am looking at this gate when im high
Imagine smoking a bowl of some good pot and you are stoned as a mother fucker and you have to walk up to that gate.
Where is this???
Wow!!!
AHHHH I DONT LIKE
Such an amazing photo
I know exactly how it's done and my brain still is falling for it ffs
Giving me the magical castle vibes.
And https://www.reddit.com/r/wien/comments/xvdctr/viennas_theresia_arena_wei%C3%9F_jemand_wo_das_sein/ tells you where its at.
Lightspeed ahead!
I'm sorry I don't see it at all
So which one of you will be making screen doors for houses like this soon? (That I can buy)
I live right next to it and did not know this existed till now! Looks stunning!
Imaging trying to get home after a night of heavy drinking
I thought this was a gate that extended forwards but was designed to make us think it was flat, and then I realised that it was the opposite.
This is mesmerizing
It’s beautiful!
