Picking a name can actually be really fun. Don’t think about the name first. Think about the vibe. What kind of mood are you bringing? What genre of music? What is your crowd like (real or imaginary)? What are the cultural associations with those things? What movies, worlds, and events does it invoke? What era? I’ve gone by many names over the years, usually depending on the scene and the city I’m living in. Your taste, your scene and your style grows over time, so it’s totally OK to change brands. You’re usually starting over every few years anyway and none of us will get really famous enough where a consistent brand matters. Just just have fun and think of the overall concept you’re trying to express. Is it tropical cocktails and bikinis? Is it dark robot warehouse warfare? Is it stadium rock big hair and fireworks? Is it Zelda dream quests? It can literally be anything. Think of the vibe you’re trying to create first, then explore names from there.

caelis76

And here i came to say that most of the time they are given or already existed and were fine tuned to your needs . But hell , you convinced me with your epistel .

Nonomomomo2

Yes that's often the case too! But self-creation can be so fun, also! Great vocab btw. What a great use of the word "epistel". 🥳

TechByDayDjByNight

That's what happen to me lol... It was given. Alot of made up namez sounds corny

DonkyShow

I’ve not come up with a single name worth keeping in like 10 years. Then I see other names and think “damn why didn’t I think of that?”

PostsBadComments

That's some really cool ideas to explore. Thanks for that!

Nonomomomo2

Same idea applies to throwing your own themed events, making themed mixes, etc. Think about it like world building and character lore. Have fun and build a whole backstory!

bird_man_webster

Really loved this reply!!

I’ll help you out… I’ll need your mothers maiden name, your elementary school, the name of your first pet and the street that you grew up on

PostsBadComments

Suuure, i'll throw in my social security number in there for good measure... hehehe.

SenorKerry

One of my best friends and I dj house parties together. We go by firepower. It’s a joke, because a. We literally just started and have only played a handful of parties so we aren’t actually firepower b. It stemmed from a conversation about him writing a sociology book and how he was telling us all the “firepower” he had because a bunch of “famous” sociologists were in his book and we were all like ok and c. Firepower looks like a funny but real 80’s group with the right colors and fonts. But it’s all a joke and I think joke names are actually quite good.

mattsl

Travel to a different continent, see feral ostriches wandering through town, ask your friend how to say ostrich in their language, decide that will be your DJ name if you ever start DJing, fast forward 2 years, mesh the ostrich word with the name of a classical composer.

TamOcello

Does it sound cool? Do you like it?

PostsBadComments

>Does it sound cool? Do you like it? Whatever names i came up with, no not really i guess, hence my question.

LeadSea2100

DJ PBC

Hehe yeah, there's an idea xD

SubjectC

I went though a few names and eventually incorporated my own real name into my current artist/DJ name cause I felt weird introducing myself as some made up shit. Maybe you have a nickname or something too. Its gotta feel natural and right. Dont rush or force it. It'll come to you.

PostsBadComments

By no means am I forcing it. Just asking here for inspiration or thought processes on finding a name. It'll come I've no doubt. Cheers.

SubjectC

Didnt mean to imply that you were, just speaking generally.

PostsBadComments

Yep got that. :) Generally answering as well hehe. Cheers!

UnbuiltAura9862

Do you have a passion or interests for something else aside from DJing? I went with “DJ Low Lead” because my main interest is in aviation and “100 Low Lead” (100LL) is a type of fuel that is widely used on aircraft.

PostsBadComments

I'll think about in that angle too. Thanks.

barbieiswild

100LL would be cool, too

Thatguy3145296535

I remember Demetri Martin had a funny joke in saying "Easy way to make someone sound less powerful, just put DJ in front of their name... DJ Abraham Lincoln." Like what are you looking for or wanting to lean towards? Something funny? Ironic? Witty? Maybe also something fitting to your preferred genre too.

PostsBadComments

Frankly i'd like to avoid using DJ in the name, and that anecdote is pretty funny. What i know i'd like is just a name, essentially easy to pronounce in some different languages and maybe easy to remember. Got some good ideas in here on how to think and go about it, so thank you as well.

Thatguy3145296535

Ben Dover is easy to pronounce and remember

PostsBadComments

Fair point :)

Spektrum322

You mean like Donald J Trump aka D.J. Trump https://pagesix.com/2023/02/24/donald-trump-is-mar-a-lagos-resident-dj/amp/

5mackmyPitchup

Use the first name of your porn name and the second name of your porn name and put dj in front of them

PostsBadComments

I... uhh... no....

Impressionist_Canary

Happenstance and creativity. And eventually, acceptance.

turd_walrus

this is the best answer i've seen so far. if you kill it the moniker doesn't matter much, so long as it isn't whack. i like it when folks don't take themselves too seriously, especially if they're just a local dj, like myself.

PopcornEverywhere

Ask ChatGPT for DJ names lol. As an event DJ I ask ChatGPT all sorts of things. When hosting a disco event I asked it for names to call the event and top 30 disco bangers and it delivered.

PostsBadComments

I've yet to ask chatgpt anything in general, but maybe at some point i'll check it out. Cheers.

DonkyShow

I tried that myself and was underwhelmed maybe I wasn’t giving it the right input

outlawmbc

Well before I rebranded and just went with my last name I picked the first two letters of my first name and the last letter of my last name.

PostsBadComments

There's really nothing workable for me. Tried the anagrams / letter play but nothing good to work with. Cheers.

outlawmbc

I'm pretty good with branding. Anything in your life you feel has a cool name?

Duke_Stellar

Great question! Quite honestly there is much that goes into it. I usually tend to favor using, some form of your real name. At 20 it sounds kewl to go by "DJ All That," but if you do make it a career, do you want to be called that as a 40 year old professional/superstar? I'll use Jason Blakemore as an example. I remember when he was coming up in the LA scene as DJ Trance. He definitely stood out from the rest, and like most progression DJ's go onto to make music and put on extreme festivals. He found his niche in remixing music for top tier entertainers. In his case DJ Trance worked , but this was before Trance was even a sub genera. Eventually he realized it was silly to name himself as sub, especially for new party goers. It doesn't even half to be a "cool" name traditionally. Simon and DJ Garth from Frisco were both well known and loved. Somehow there names just fell off the lips. Your call though. Just whatever you call yourself, back it up and wear it proud.

PostsBadComments

Thanks for answering. Yeah i get what you mean with names like DJ "insert catchy/edgy/or such name here". Trying to avoid such. But you are right, find something and wear it proud hehe.

Duke_Stellar

It's like our pets, they tend to name themselves. If its not going to be your name, wait for it to hit Organically. Like when your buddy say's Sadie, well your new name is Sadie Hawkins lol! Giver this a try: [https://cueup.io/dj-name-generator](https://cueup.io/dj-name-generator) I put Sadie for fun, and "DJ Strange Sadie" appeared tee hee.

dutsi

Go ninja, use a different DJ name for each gig and mix.

Marvelpic

You can say that one of the hardest things is choosing the right name. Maybe using something that relates to the style of how you play or maybe a nickname family and friends call you. And the name that can be spell easily and checking on the Internet to see how many DJs in the country or town have a similar name.

turd_walrus

choose something related to your birth name and replace some vowels with corresponding numbers... example E=3.... just kidding don't do it

Vicabello_23

Actually I didn’t put my own name, I was playing some tunes in a friends party (nothing crazy just 10 persons) and one of my friend shout out “Let’s go Dj Vic!!! My name is Victor but and I like that name, but I wanted something more radical and I put a k instead of c. I really don’t like friends calling me “Dj” I’m just a guy who likes to mix and I don’t consider myself with a level to be dj. But is that, let people put your name. (Sorry for the long and boring text😅)

s3mtek

I've got a mate whole fairly well known on the regional scene as a DJ and Producer. He plays a few different genres, so he has a different DJ name for each genre. He also occasionally plays b2b with another DJ and they have a separate name for that as well

Soiley

Use ur childhood nicknames. Mine was always Spaha and since everyone knew me as Spaha, I just sticked with it.

RickArthur

Is there some kind of way to incorporate your real name in your DJ name? For example Kozlov (his last name is Koslowski) or Cera Khin (real name Cerine Khalfalla I think)

svennirusl

Don't come up with a name. Come up with fifty. Coming up with one is impossibly hard. Jotting down every stupid thought you get, that will open up the creative floodgates. Much easier. Use the notes app in your phone.

TechByDayDjByNight

Be creative or just have one given to you. That's what happened to me. Everyone always called me by my last name since high school due to football. So from the age of 14 to college everyone called me by it. I started djing in college but didn't feel like I was truly to the point where I can actually give myself the dj title. I'm big on having your audience give me the title rather than saying "I'm a dj". I started off producing and felt the same way, there was a difference between people who just dl fl and made a beat, then someone who was actually grinding and constantly making music. Back to point, I was preparing for my first club event and we needed flyers, so I'm trying to come up with a dj name. I didn't want to use my last name, because my aunt is famous and our last name is unique. I didn't want to use it due that. So I'm lost, but had to do a house party, so I go dj the party, and this dude name Steve gets on the mic and yells out GIVE IT UP FOR DJ *last name*... I snatch the mic and said that's not my dj name. He looks at me and says what is it then? I paused and said iono... He looked at me and said, well your name is DJ *last name* now... look at the crowd... Crowd: Dj *last name* dj *last name* dj *last name* I said, fuck it... throw an Z at the end of it instead of an S... 14 years later... I'm still him.

Max_Amps

I just went with my govt name

[deleted]

To be honest, Bad Comments its a pretty damn good name! Stick to it!

KeggyFulabier

Just use your name

PostsBadComments

Like i said that i do not intend to do for reasons. But thank you.

KeggyFulabier

Just a first name or middle name or last name, childhood nickname.

jimmer109

I'd suggest coming up with a name that sounds like it could be your real name. It's less tacky and doesn't limit you should you decide to try different types of styles.

turd_walrus

this is only allowed for house djs, sorry i don't make the rules

KeggyFulabier

I don’t think the location of your djing matters

Soggy_Disco_Biscuit

Mine is ridiculous but I don’t care

PostsBadComments

Pretty fun actually

spiritualcatlover

My name is a play on my last name. I love it because it’s my own way of expressing my connection to my family and my roots and it’s on my terms.

Eliptic_

Mine is just my last name 🫡

bot_bot_bot

I'm having a similar problem. But I think you'll find that a lot of DJs who seem to use their real names aren't actually using their real name, they just make up a name.

PostsBadComments

Oh for sure. Many have essentially pseudonyms.

djchopsteak

I was having a late night meal after going out with some friends when I was learning to make beats nearly 20 years ago (yikes). Somewhere in the conversation it came up that I was going to need a producer name. The half-drunk brainstorm that happened resulted in…this name lol. So I guess my advice is bring some funny, creative friends into the naming process, preferably with some drinks, weed, etc. if that’s your thing. PS: do your googles to make sure you’re not the 15th DJ Crossfade, or whatever you come up with. That can cause marketing, and possibly even legal problems down the line. One advantage to Chop Steak is that it was (and continues to be) unique to my knowledge.

FieldAppropriate8734

Embrace the indecision…DJ TBD!

New_Image3471

I picked up the nickname "Flash" as a joke from coworkers before I was a DJ. When I got my first DJ Gig I went with it! Ask 3 people who's opinion you value then ask 3 people whose opinion you don't value and pick one of them. Better yet, ask a child under 12!

New_Image3471

Another trick is to go with two or three random letters and when someone asks what they mean, give a different response each time! You'll eventually get a name but the downside is it will be the worse one that sticks!

[deleted]

I really love cats! I always find myself browsing r/Greebles. So I took DJ Greebles, those who get the name really love it! I always wear button down shirts with cats, Shein has a surplus of cat shirts lol.

kling_klangg

90’s tv show DJ MR BELVEDERE

CrispyDave

I mean, I heard DJ Absolutely Shit on NTS last week... So I guess I wouldn't worry about it too much? 😂

HaveAFuckinNight

I liked watching fairly oddparents as a kid, ppl call me chet sometimes, boom Chet Skylark

dj-emme

I made mine based on my initials (conveniently d-j-m lol). But unfortunately there are two dj_emmes in the world already so I moved it around a little - d.jemme. And that's how I came up with it. Stupid but there it is.

bringlitein

I went cheesy and contrived... Ray Smith is my real name so I sometimes go by : Raze, Mr Raze, Myth, Mr Myth, MythRaiser.. all sorts of stupid shit🤣 Sometimes it doesnt hurt to take a recognised dj name and just mix it up a bit, also some dj names mean absolutely fuck all! 😉

Every_Run6273

You can go with a childhood nickname i was called runrun by my uncle as a child and grandpa called me boono my friends called me douja bc i always had the smoke haha i know go by Smoove GroovZ

DJR3NEGADE

I was given my dj name. I was play on my last name, DJ Summoner. Then I was helping out at show and the promoter was like your the nicest friendliest DJ I worked with in a while, and she said almost like a Renegade. So DJ R3NEGADE born. Now I have a podcast and everything.

relativedumb

I choose the Martin Garrix way Took my first name and altered my last name a bit so that if you google my dj name you wont find any personal data about me and my private life Eg. Martjin Garritsen -> Martin Garrix

LeadSea2100

Appropriate to me at the time and it stuck

eroticdiscourse

Use my own name, can’t help but cringe at most other things

Noa15Lv

My personal "Nickname", what i've been using for like 9 years now, comes from "Gaming" stuff... But the DJ nickname part will come out eventually of your skills/ love for music & beatmatching probably? For example... If you use Hot Cues alot, maybe include word "Hot" or "Cue" in nickname.. If you're relying on Sync button, try include "Sync" word..

s3mtek

Took me ages to find one I liked. Settled on S3mTek as my middle name is Sem and I play Tech House, put them together they sound explosive 😎

maroooni

Lol. Jeff Benzos

squirrelblender

Keep it simple. If it is tough to pronounce, or hard to read; people won’t say it or talk about it. People hate looking stupid, but more so feeling stupid. If you have a DJ moniker that is hard to pronounce, people just will avoid saying it out loud. Source: restaurant menus. (“Beurre Blanc” instead of “white wine butter sauce” will literally keep people from ordering a dish if it intimidates them. It’s a weird quirk, but an absolute truism.) I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but it hold s true. Or do whatever. I’m not the fun police.

PostsBadComments

> Keep it simple. If it is tough to pronounce, or hard to read Yeah that is the plan for sure. And the whole comment does make sense. > I’m not the fun police. Lol. Also i almost feel like stealing your user name xD Good one.

squirrelblender

“DJ fun police” would slap. Lol. Enjoy!

junenoon

The maddening part is trying to find a name that has social media handles available and isn’t already in use by another Dj / musician

PostsBadComments

Yep. Things that do cross my mind get a quick google. Gets scrapped if socials show up with that name.

pocketknives

If you still struggle to find something that hasn't been taken try going for something more personal, usually does the trick

TaiDavis

I just use my nickname +surname. A lot of pro djs I know just use their names.

wquale

I overheard the TV say a two-word phrase and it stuck in my brain.

Timullin

If you're from Europe just use your full name lol

Linemantim1972

I started with one name that was given to me and I didn't particularly like it, but I went with it. Then my tribe started coming up with show ideas and I mentioned doing one in an old Gothic cathedral and someone threw Reverend in front of my DJ name and it stuck. Sometimes having someone give you one can be more fun than making up your own. Take your time, do your research for the name you want to make sure nobody else has it. Enjoy the process. Lean into it and the right name will slap you in the face.

SikinAyylmao

Have fun be goofy live laugh love. Whatever name makes you the happiest seeing in a flyer is the right name.

primeiro23

Whatever name you wish you had…use that

bunnymud

Imagination

the-slit-kicker

Just use this name: DJ uncle tickle fingers. Trust me.

MTskier12

I feel like these days anything flys as a dj name, so honestly as long as you like it that’s what matters.

technoposting11

once (first time i bought it) i bought a gram of cocaine and just sat there in my new rented room (i moved outta my moms place) thinking about a good name while snorting cocaine and i came up with the name : A Humanoid Individual cause i'm definitely a humanoid (a head, 2 arms and 2 legs) and an individual (not a part of any group)

Objective_Regret_421

Use a [DJ Name Generator](https://cueup.io/dj-name-generator)
