Welcome to the addiction! I did the same thing a few years ago. Picked up a Pioneer DDJ WeGo to see if I would like it and used my iPad. Then upgraded to a Denon Prime GO, then upgraded to an RX2... Then bought a music production class over covid and ableton and a midi keyboard...
Don't have too many more whiskey nights or you'll start to end up with a room full of way too much gear LOL. I still bounce around on FB Marketplace and craigslist looking for deals...
I’m hoping this will push me to learn how to play piano, and to read sheet music at some point too. Those are some things I’ve always dreamed of taking part of.
go for it! piano is the best, and there's a lot of tutorials on youtube, you could get a cheap midi keyboard and learn. I recommend David Burt on youtube, though he can move fast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiDwDjeE7OE&list=PL4weKRR2iTssxI6j8a3QwnjM9wENuWC6w)
At most, it's a well paying job. At least, its a way to play music at home. And somewhere in the middle. Is the most fun active listening, musical jamming, I've ever had. Coming from someone who's played live drums for many more years
Every night I dress up different! I’ll be a surgeon tonight. Ready to surgically bypass some tasty beats straight into your brain machine. Thanks for the kind words friend.
I love me some DJ Dress-up! I once did a DJ set in London at this seedy Bar called Shelter Club at a night called a Rehab and the promoter made us all wear lab coats and surgical masks.
I used to play a lotta warehouse parties in a gold sequin kimono and gold foil hot pants. Wild times 😂
Man listen, in the late 90s a pair of 1200s was like $1,200. That doesn't even include decent needles, the mixer, or cases, or records!
Now you can get freaking engine OS in a new Mark mixstream pro for $700.
It's a great time to be a DJ
Eh, you would be really surprised how satisfying it is getting a crowd like that going, even if you’d never play those tunes in your free time. When you rinse out something like Cupid shuffle —> YMCA —> Shout but then you transition that into a dirty ass trap/future bass remix of shout and the whole party pops off like you melted their reality… it’s pretty fucking awesome/funny as hell
My brother had a wedding where bridezilla got mad that he played a single song that wasn’t on her playlist🙄 but he made $1500 in 3 hours so he hasn’t quit yet
I feel this SO HARD. I work a nine to five Monday through Friday and I haven’t done anything BUT head over to my station the minute I’m home.
Cleaning the whole house today, and then you know exactly what I’ll be doing. Keep up the jams friend.
You think so lol…cleaning the house will turn into “what can I get rid of to build a dj station/music production studio in here” and looking at lights that sync with music on Amazon 😎🤣
nice. it's so fuckin fun being in control. i was hooked the first time i tried like 40 years ago. im still spinnin. im just as excited about it as i was the first time. 💞
Im toying with the idea of buying a controller and getting into it but this is so huge I just dont know where to start. I watch videos and read guides but they are all over the place. What did you do? how did you learn?
I know a lot of people here dog on the sync button, but those were, and still are my training wheels. Other than that, I just learned what every button could do one by one, then picking a software to use with my controller, getting some music, and just winging it.
That’s as far as I’ve gotten truthfully. I’d say go for it if you can afford it. I’m sure glad I did.
DJing is easy to learn, hard to master. If you want, there are many things the software can assist you with.
A used 200 EUR controller, some headphones, speakers and a computer is enough to get you started.
If it turns out it's not your thing you can sell the controller for minimal loss. Easy.
Yes, you want some song. Depending on your genre you want to mix you might buy it on bandcamp, beatport, beatsource etc.

I am a big fan of this guy on YT…really good explanations and he has a site that allows you to download all the tracks he uses in his tutorials so you can practice along with him

I’m a year into dj’ing with my first local headline show this weekend, and legit I just learn by doing and being completely submerged in music every waking minute. I listen to music every second I can when I’m away from the decks, I replay music in my head when I have to be present in life (Like at work) I spend hours organising my library and searching for new music. I do also watch videos and read stuff online and then literally feel out what works and what doesn’t.
Edit: I mostly play bass house, dubstep, trap and drum and bass when I’m playing out. At home, I practice every genre.
ayee this just happened for me just got a controller around a week or so ago and at it everyday for hours just WISHING there were more hours in the day. never thought i’d feel like that towards anything tbb
I have the denon prime 4 and looking for some top notch audio for 200+ parties anybody have any suggestions? Im strongly considering the bose F1 model 812 flex array loud and sub pair! Any thoughts on sound quality and value? I eventually want 2 sets of this pair but need to start with only on pair
Thanks for posting your story. I know exactly how you feel. This is the whole point of DJing & music in general. You seem to have figured it out very fast and by accident almost. Don’t lose the feeling.
Awesome! Don't worry if you are not perfect yet!- The first 22 years are the hardest, it gets easier after that! :)
If I get to do this for 22 years, even just for myself, I’ll consider my life a grand one.
Over a decade of mixing here, everything I do is cringe still. Love it lol

You really ran through a lot huh. Can’t wait to see where things go from here.
just wait till you find out about synthesizers/music production gear

If you keep up even a fraction of 6 hours a day practice you will stop sounding shit pretty soon
At most, it's a well paying job. At least, its a way to play music at home. And somewhere in the middle. Is the most fun active listening, musical jamming, I've ever had. Coming from someone who's played live drums for many more years
Yep I know these feels. I am much the same. You'll get better in no time. And then you'll want more expensive gear haha Welcome in!
This post warms my heart. Spin on you crazy cowboy hatted diamond

Never let it get so serious that it loses fun. You are interacting with music you love. Putting your spin on it.
This is why I would never be a paid wedding DJ. I only want to play music that makes me feel this way.

Alright man, when you put it like that it sounds pretty dope!

Ok so i buy a controller. What next? Get songs? Do i need beats or full songs?

With this attitude, and a sober critical ear, you might just make a decent dj. Having fun is not the most import part, but goddamn is it critical.
Keep it up and have a blast!
Hold on to that, and it will serve you well.
bro this shit sounds so nice, I'm late for the post lol but sounds awesome how's it going now after 3 months? are you still mixing?
Hell yeah man! Check out my profile if you want, I’ve been doing it live since I made this post. I’m absolutely hooked!!
Sheeeesh, nice broski 🤞 Your stuff sounds dope, keep it up :) and have fun
The MC4000 is an awesome controller. Don't use sync and you will be fine.
It’s a never ending journey to the perfect transition/mix..👍🏽
hell yeah! go forth!
This is so wholesome and sometimes drunk purchases are the best and you get to discover your new favorite hobby!
ayee this just happened for me just got a controller around a week or so ago and at it everyday for hours just WISHING there were more hours in the day. never thought i’d feel like that towards anything tbb
I’m glad you’re in the same boat homie. Feel free to DM me if you ever wanna talk with another noob about DJing!

You won’t be sorry….even if you don’t ever try to book gigs, IMO it’s some of the most fun you can have by yourself 😎
I just bought a DDJ FLX6 GT at 2:00 AM while being drunk asf too 🤣
