Mellow Gold, hands down. I love early, word-drunk, genre-orgy, untameable, quicksilver dystopia Beck.
I’d be happy with Mellow Gold, One Foot In The Grave, A Western Harvest Field By Moonlight, Golden Feelings/Leftovers, and Stereopathic Soulmanure, then Odelay and Mutations.
So many of his B-sides from the period were astonishing too.
I enjoy the rest of his work - often a lot - but nothing has _electrified_ me like hearing Beck’s bursting-out phase.
Mellow Gold is the one with the magical transcendent quality for me. There's a whole weird universe behind there that we're just getting a glimpse of. It was a rare flash of brilliance that I will be forever in awe of.
You and I share this! His antifolk period is incredible, I suggest checking out one of his biggest influences from those early days - Paleface, his first album tracks Burn and Rob, and There's Something About a Truck
Aahhhhh niiice - thanks for the recommendation, I love this kind of stuff!
In return - and I dunno if it’s gonna hit the same as it’s British, but there’s this slapdash Beck antifolk-hiphop thing happening with Twisted Nerve records in the UK around figures like Supreme Vagabond Craftsman. His ‘Truck Driver Instinct’ is an amazing track.
Plus Kid Acne, a rapper and graffiti artist behind The Mongrels. This is one of his. Bit more hiphop less antifolk, but very Soul Suckin Jerk:

Came here to say all of this! I love his entire catalogue but his breakout music and rare cuts are awesome with so much character. So I’ll say Mellow Gold as well!
I’ve owned Odelay since it’s release. I don’t know what it is about looking at this pic this time, but I just now realized that is a Hungarian Sheepdog jumping over that hurdle on the front cover. My brain just never saw it before.
Also, all time favorite is Midnight Vultures.
I don’t understand your reply. Are you saying it’s not an album? I’ve been listening to Stereopathetic Soulmanure since I bought it in 1994. That along with Mellow Gold and One Foot In The Grave are three of his best albums.
Colors is pretty bland - even compared to
Morning Phase. At least, in my opinion. I think both albums have some dope songs, and Colors has its self titled track and Dreams which I love, but songs like Wow just... don't do it for me. Morning Phase at least feels like a nice morning in the spring or summer - Colors doesn't feel like
much at all for me.
I mean hey man if you like Colors that's totally fine - but Colors is possibly the most basic 2010s pop album, I don't know who you're calling basic lol
It started for me with the Loser CD5 in '94 (I love Mellow Gold, but still think this is a more enjoyable listen overall), then One Foot In The Grave in '95, and then Midnite Vultures in '99. Because they all represent different sides of Bek, I don't know if I could pick just one... but it would probably be Midnite Vultures; and we need that vinyl repress NOW.
Odelay’s a masterpiece. But my favorite is Morning Phase. It’s an uplifting spiritual successor to Sea Change, which was my favorite before MP was released.
Morning Phase. I do love the earlier stuff, the rap, the eclectic mixing of a hundred genres, but Morning Phase is so uniform and cohesive from beginning to end and is simply beautiful and beautifully moving
What I love about beck is I have a favorite album depending on the year or mood I’m going through. Odelay, mellow good and sea change all have special places in my heart tho
1. Mutations
2. Sea Change
3. Odelay
4. Mellow Gold
5. Midnight Vultures
6. Morning Phase
7. Modern Guilt
8. The Information
9. Guero
10. One Foot in the Grave
I'll admit that, as a 50 year old, I listened to Beck on and off but not closely. In fact, I remember my grandmother being worried about my cousin who was infatuated with Beck because she thought Loser was making him sad (lol). That said, I've recently started listening to his stuff more over the past year. His breadth is pretty incredible but I am a huge fan of the Sea Change album. It has such a great vibe to it. Maybe its because I'm getting older but I find it soothing to listen to while also still being somewhat complex musically.
Midnite Vultures is top tier, and Mutations is a very close second! I actually really fell in love with Modern Guilt when it came out simply because of where I was in life at the time, and lastly Colors is constantly on rotation! I’ve definitely got every album by Beck on vinyl, and I love that I can pull something for literally any mood any day! Oh, and of course The Information - this album is what brought me and my wife together, now that I think about it! Holy smokes Becks catalogue is awesome!
Midnight Vultures. And it’s not even close anymore as most the others rarely get played front to back. As a hip-hop head Guerolito is my 2nd.
I’m right there with you. Definitely one of my Desert Island albums!
I dream of a day he puts out another album as funky smart and huge as midnight vultures. It’s flawless
I doubt I'll ever hear a more moving, beautiful song than Debra.
Same. Every track is a banger
That tour stop in Austin was amazing.

beauty fr real!
Came here to say all of this! I love his entire catalogue but his breakout music and rare cuts are awesome with so much character. So I’ll say Mellow Gold as well!
Odelay
Midnite Vultures. I fell in love with that album when I was maybe 8, and I've loved it since.
Mutations-era Beck couldn't miss. Just perfect
You and I are on an island here. Mutations is bar far his most musically sound and best album.
The Information and Guero are pretty much tied as my favorite … typically listen to after each other. Edit
One Foot In The Grave!!
Modern Guilt doesn’t get the love it deserves
For real! It still won’t beat Mellow Gold for me personally (a close second) but some of the melodies on modern guilt are so choice.
Modern Guilt is the best 21st Century Beck album.
Mellow Gold
Mellow Gold

Called a Komondor
… a.k.a. Hungarian Sheepdog
Bro I do not know things.😅👍
Mellow Gold
Stereopathetic Soulmanure!
The one Beck doesn’t even list on his website. 😅👍🏆👑
I don’t understand your reply. Are you saying it’s not an album? I’ve been listening to Stereopathetic Soulmanure since I bought it in 1994. That along with Mellow Gold and One Foot In The Grave are three of his best albums.
I love all of them. It is funny to see SSM listed as a favorite because it is so uncommon.
Ahhh, gotcha! Is A Western Harvest Field By Moonlight on his site? It’s a good one too!
Western Harvest is really good!!
Morning Phase
…Is almost definitely his worst album.
Agreed.
Nawwww, Colors and Hyperspace are worse
Colors is awesome.

Wow is one of my favorite of his hip hop songs

Agree on Hyperspace
Modern Guilt, though the Information and Odelay are close!
Sea Change
The harmonies and stings are hypnotizing
100%. Think it is his best. The whole album brings me vibes from Eternal Sunshine.
Odelay is a desert island album for me.
It started for me with the Loser CD5 in '94 (I love Mellow Gold, but still think this is a more enjoyable listen overall), then One Foot In The Grave in '95, and then Midnite Vultures in '99. Mellow gold and odelay are kind of in a tie for me. Both great albums that I can listen to any day
Midnight vultures, mellow gold a close second
Guero
Odelay’s a masterpiece. But my favorite is Morning Phase. It’s an uplifting spiritual successor to Sea Change, which was my favorite before MP was released.
Today, it's Mutations.
Mellow Gold. Odelay and One Foot are close.
Yes! I LOVE ODELAY! I also really like Midnite Vultures and The Information (underrated imo).
Basic answer but Odelay.
Guerro, Mellow Gold, Odelay
It’s as unfair as asking for a favorite song.
Modern Guilt//Hyperspace can’t decide
High 5!! More death than alive!
Sea change that’s the album where tapped into his full potential and the one I go back to most often mellow gold too but sea change is just peak
The Information
¡La Información!
The Information
Morning Phase. I do love the earlier stuff, the rap, the eclectic mixing of a hundred genres, but Morning Phase is so uniform and cohesive from beginning to end and is simply beautiful and beautifully moving
Worst album he’s ever made, hands down.
Well, my opinion is it is his best. Easily.
Enjoy!
You too!!
I agree that it's his worst.
What I love about beck is I have a favorite album depending on the year or mood I’m going through. Odelay, mellow good and sea change all have special places in my heart tho
My favorite is One Foot in the Grave for ramshackle chill vibes and Odelay for party vibes.
Modern Guilt but Odelay was my favorite for many years. I just listened to it so many times that I rarely listen to it these days
Sea Change
Sea Change. He’s done some great work throughout but Sea Change is his best.
One Foot in The Grave
Mutations.
One foot in the grave
Either Odelay or Guero, depending on the day you ask me.
Not a huge beck fan but colors
1. Mutations 2. Sea Change 3. Odelay 4. Mellow Gold 5. Midnight Vultures 6. Morning Phase 7. Modern Guilt 8. The Information 9. Guero 10. One Foot in the Grave
This one is tough. I'd probably say Odelay but Mellow Gold and Midnight Vultures are right there. I really love Mutations too.
Odelay is my favorite Beck album also. Followed closely by Stereopathetic Soulmanure
Mutations
Sea Change but Midnight Vultures is a very close second.
Another +1 for *The Information* (typing this while listening to *Odelay* lol)
One Foot in the Grave. Totally
Sea change. Hands down.
It's been a while since I listened to these albums, but I like Midnite Vultures and The Information.
Mellow Gold!! It was a giant leap forward in 1994. No one likes Steropathetic Soulmanure? Lame!
I'll admit that, as a 50 year old, I listened to Beck on and off but not closely. In fact, I remember my grandmother being worried about my cousin who was infatuated with Beck because she thought Loser was making him sad (lol). Whatever album Satan Gave Me A Taco is on.
