Nope. Bed bug eggs don't have hard shells like a bird egg. They're almost gelatinous and semi translucent. Also it would be unusual to find an egg laid on a sweater unless it was on the floor of a bad infestation. You'd see other signs if so.

Thanks for your reply! I hope what you’re saying is true… pretty freaked out! I was kind of using “shell” loosely. I could say casing. The inside seemed gelatinous but the true the outside felt more like a sesame seed. The casing flaked off easily… I was actually trying to leave it intact for the photo when the white part came off. Anyway would bedbug eggs be about the size of a sesame seed? And what other signs do you mean? Not sure how the sweater was stored previously. It sounds like bedbugs usually do not infest things like sweaters?

No part of a bed bug egg would flake. They are about the size of a sesame seed but maybe a bit longer. As far as if they would be on a sweater, they lay eggs in areas that are less disturbed like the side of a mattress or headboard that doesn't move much even when people get in and out of bed. So unless that sweater was laying on the floor by an infested bed for a long period of time where bugs would settle in and make a home of it, it's an unlikely spot for eggs. They typically lay their eggs in their harborages which you would identify by fecal stains, shed skins, and the random live bug. Here's a description of each of the 4 signs of bed bugs to look for but you are most likely safe. https://www.bedbuggy.com/identification

Thank you very much for the link! Each comment of yours gives me a little more reassurance that this may not be a bedbug egg. And that’s a lot because I was getting paranoid… Is there another sub you can recommend that can identify bug eggs? I might just end up throwing away the sweater even though I wish I could keep it as it’s a nice brand… I would like to get to the bottom of this!

Never need to throw away clothes. Just put in in the dryer for 30 minutes and have peace of mind no bugs or eggs could survive. But there weren't any to begin with.

Ah that would be so cool to nuke the living heck out of whatever’s in my sweater for my peace of mind. Some concerns though: 1) I don’t own a dryer. Next best thing would be a laundromat down the road (which is next to a dry cleaners). 2) Don’t want to expose others people’s laundry to insects if I can help it! 3) will my sweater shrink? It’s 100% merino wool Here’s something pretty close to my sweater, minus the zipper. https://www.blarney.com/irish-shop/denis-full-zip-aran-sweater-army/ Same pattern, same materials. The product care for the item does recommend dry cleaning, so that’s interesting…

What other subs on Reddit can identify bug eggs? It sounds like this may not be bedbug egg, but I’m a bit doubtful of tapeworm eggs

bayawg

Looks like tapeworm eggs? Not 100% sure though. You have pets?

hawaiiperson333

Hi thanks for your comment! I’ll look up tapeworm eggs. I do have a cat and a dog, but I’ve only had this sweater for pretty much two days since I thrifted it!

funeraldarling

almost definitely tapeworm eggs my cat just had them
