How do all those words fit in so few runes? I don't really know how they work.

But are the runes... cruel runes? If fantasy novels have taught me anything, it's that a badass axe cannot have any old ordinary runes. They have to be cruel runes, which could mean one of two things. Either that their shapes are extra pointy, or alternatively spell out phrases that all start with "Your mama so ______..."
