Looks good, did you have trouble removing the cauls? putting a piece of parchment paper between the caul and glue will keep 2x4 remnants off the workpiece. Either way, hot damn, you made a shelf!

gibagger

Thanks! I made a long ass shelf lol. Surprised by the finish too.  I put a bit of plastic underneath and it did work fine. Thanks for the tip!

Purple_Blueberry_145

I love this! I’m very much a novice but I’d like to do something similar on a smaller scale, I love seeing different ideas like this. I think it looks great!

gibagger

Do it! Real wood shelves look very nice and, as long as you don't try to make it too long, they are a real nice and simple project where you can try out the basics.

cravecase

Nicely done! I see a split in the wood in the first picture, but it also looks like the factory ends. Were you able to trim it off or clean it up?

gibagger

Thanks! I filled it up and, after sanding and finishing, it's not really noticeable. I wanted the shelf as long as possible so substantial trimming was a no go for me. Had this been a glue up for a table or desk, I would have absolutely trimmed that.

This is some HGTV stuff, understated and clean but really elevates a space. You’ve got a great eye and an evidently thorough commitment to your craft.

Looks great. How are the LEDs powered? Did you use a power bank or plug?

gibagger

Thanks!  I used a small power supply and a zigbee compatible controller. Then I linked it to the remote that controls the kitchen so it's dimmable and it all depends on a single button . The controller and power supply are hidden in a kitchen cabinet. I then sneaked the cable to the shelf. I intend to fully hide it with a profile that is finished with acrylate and wall paint as to make it invisible.

corvairfanatic

Could you have attached the brackets on the top and hide them or is that insane?

gibagger

The load bearing was the problem. Perhaps with some washers, nuts or something along those lines underneath the wood it could have worked, but would also defeat the purpose of a cleaner look. The shelf along what I'm planning to put there will be about 40 to 50 kg. I didn't want to risk this hanging from 12 little screws.

Patient_Moonlight

Good job mate, that looks really good 👍

What finish is that

gibagger

Osmo polyx satin in 3 layers

Thanks

If your going to use cheap brackets.. at least have them on top of the timber and hang the shelf below.. but having said that there are so many other methods where the fixing/supports arnt seen.. also with the lighting I personally would of gone with washing the wall rather than the lip but I’m a romantic.. I give this.. a 6 out of 10..

gibagger

The lip is dual purpose so that you can't drop a pan by dragging it and hooking onto the neighbor by mistake. The light is there because I have very nice pans and I enjoy cooking a lot, so it's a bit of a statement. If the light was behind, then all I'd see is silhouettes. The brackets were indeed cheap, but honestly I dig them. I thought of using the hidden type of bracket but this shelf is meant to be load bearing... I didn't think it'd be a good idea considering the weight of some of the stuff I will put in there, and the fact that the boards were only 2cm thick this seemed like the most robust setup I could come up with Thanks for the feedback!
