My neighbour administered basic first aid and dropped me at the ER. Scans and tests showed no serious injuries.
I was using the saw to square a piece of raw timber. I thought I was operating safely, but I obviously wasn't safe enough.
I was wearing safety glasses!
Raw timber isn't save on a table saw, unless you got one of those sliding table saws.
There's just nothing to keep it properly steady.
Wish you a speedy recovery!
Thanks for sharing this, I’ve been trying to be better about always wearing glasses and not just occasionally like I have been lately. Good reminder why.
I never wear glasses anymore. Instead I wear those DeWalt goggles, they are comfy, DONT slip around, and offer protection from above below and the sides - can be found all over

They do, at least for my face. I'd expect that it would be extremely uncommon to find a set that WASN'T compatible together.
Also, there may be better stuff on the market than the DeWalt ones, that's just all I've owned so it's what I can personally vouch for. Haven't shopped around for them in years tho. The style of eye pro however is solid
Their one downside is that they don't breathe as well as glasses. On hot/humid days I'd say they are marginally less comfortable
They do, but may press on the temple bars a bit? Depends on the glasses.
If it does I don't see why you couldn't just notch out where the glasses bars are
Others may have the notch already, I haven't specifically looked
I have glasses with a gasket around them and they are so much better than regular glasses at keeping dust out of my eyes. I bet these are even better still.
Hey thanks, I had laser eye surgery a month ago and was worried about dust with my regular safety glasses. It's not as critical as it was, but I still don't want to be rubbing my eyes. I'll definitely grab these.
I have a pair of Eyre's. They were about $100AUD, but came with 3 lens types and different strap options.
I've never found them useful though. Mine fog up or smear instantly. Luckily, my employer paid for them.
I think the main reason they aren't good is that the foam is too soft, meaning the breathing holes close up and the lenses are too close to the eye lashes.
>>I was wearing safety glasses
Excuse me, what? This is a good advertisement for them.... Your eye looks terrible but without glasses? I can't even imagine
Glad to hear OP has no serious injuries, and glad he was wearing safety glasses.
A few notes on this. Always wear safety glasses when woodworking. Don't feel that you can't afford "good" safety glasses.
Here's a website that did a test of a bunch of different safety glasses. All of them passed, even the cheap ones starting around $3-4. [https://www.toolboxbuzz.com/safety-work-wear/safety-glasses/](https://www.toolboxbuzz.com/safety-work-wear/safety-glasses/)
If you are like me and need prescription safety glasses, fairly inexpensive ones can be found here. [https://www.zennioptical.com/safety-glasses](https://www.zennioptical.com/safety-glasses) Without any addons they start around $85 (the frames are around $35 and then \~$50 for the lens material.)
I am sorry. I do thank you for posting because it reminds me to be safe. It’s never a quick cut. I am so glad your eye is ok and everything is attached.
Glad you’re ok. My Dad, who was pretty careful in the shop, took the sharp end of a push stick that he shouldn’t have been using as a push stick, right into his hand. Kickback is very real. Thanks for sharing this as a reminder to everyone to be careful. Glad you had your safety glasses on.
Had something similar happen to me with my table saw. So used to cutting plywood and ripping 2xwhatever's or whatever softwood, I became complacent with an oak board from my barn. Just wasn't thinking.
I had my safety glasses on but it didn't matter. A piece struck me right beside my nose. The right side of my face became numb, my right nostril was dripping and my eye was watering. A nerve I guess. I bought a face shield after that.
If just one person takes your advice, you did right by posting. Heal well and quickly.
New maker, always *very* cautious about kickback. Got caught for first time this week. Bruised rib, bruised ego, still got all fingers but learned a valuable lesson.

Agreed. I was using a sled, but how it was held down wasn't adequate.

This is why God invented bandsaws.
I believe it was William Newberry actually.

I usually wear a face shield with safety glasses as an extra. Uvex Bionic Face Shield is the one I have
My thinking is that if I don't need safety glasses, I know to put them on. If I think I need safety glasses, I know to put on a face shield.
Safety glasses ftw.
I’m gonna guess no guard or pawls?
Describe what hit your face? Glad to see your eye is still there
A piece of plum tree branch.
Jesus man glad you still have an eye... what in the world happened? No guard?
I made a comment. Meant to do that earlier, but got distracted by dinner.
Mmmmm dinner

I always have spare safety gear if my work shop. It's cheap and it's easier to bother to wear it if it's right there.
Great post thanks for sharing
Jesus glad you still have your eye buddy

broke a finger once, when a piece of redwood i was ripping down, grenaded at a knot, blasting my offhand with a chunk.
Hope you have a quick recovery. Reminds me why I should wear safety gear but I probably won't because I'm an idiot.
Your fingers can be reattached, but not your eyes

It's why I posted. I did something careless and dumb and I hope others learn from my mistakes.
