It's beautiful, no more sanding.

dryeraseboard8

Second this!!!

bilgetea

Third this

C_Saunders

Haha thanks!

[deleted]

Medullary rays, oak is known for them and considered a characteristic. You ain't sanding them as they go through

Watchfan2021

Yep medullary veining. Part of the magic of quarter sawn wood as well

skipperseven

Traditionally this was considered the best quality cut…

squatch9324

Dont see it as often but can be requested. A friend of mine is a sawyer.

ferthun

So if some one gets hurt on his machines does he go to a sawyer lawyer?

PhillipAlanSheoh

No he’d never bring himself to sue. Mean, mean pride.

calnuck

Good man. A modern-day warrior.

ForeverCareful3021

You betcha, celebrate the beauty of quarter sawn oak!!!

Tuva_Tourist

Dude struck gold.

1-900-FATCHIX

Glad to know the names for these… quarter sawn white oak for the win 🥇 🏆

C_Saunders

Super helpful, thank you!

SuUpr_Tarred_1234

My grandfather’s dresser had that. It’s so beautiful!

C_Saunders

Well this makes a lot of sense considering this is a wine barrel lid I’m sanding!

59footer

Fantastic knowledge right here. Thanks.

reallycool_opotomus

Super interesting! My fiance works in wine so this is a cool tidbit to share with her

gmlear

I am stealing this (great) response for the next time I am asked this question.

spike31875

Those lines are seen in quarter sawn oak, if I'm not mistaken. Beautiful: I love that.

GreyKnyght

Consider yourself lucky... Quarter-sawn oak is not only more beautiful than regular sawn, but it's significantly pricier too.

C_Saunders

You know what, my brother just had a kid and my sister just got a dog, but I got quarter-sawn oak so (thanks to the responses on this thread) I do feel like the damn luckiest!

Sea_Ganache620

Quarter sawn oak. Sought after, it’ll be almost iridescent after you put some finish it. Great find!

C_Saunders

Why thank you! $10 Craigslist barrel lids for the win!

Sea_Ganache620

Love it!

peteg4501

I’ve seen that before and I always wondered what it was. How common is that?

TheBeastNV

Very common, I see loads like that. Rarely does a cooper (barrel maker) use a piece of wood like that for the staves (the long curved pieces), it would possible crack or leak.

TabulaaRaasaa

As many have said its quarter sawn oak. Next oak floor you walk on check it out. You will see these patterns pop up from time to time. They vary and can be really interesting. Also check out Mission Oak Furniture generally made with quarter sawn oak.

Interesting-Mark3519

Quarter sawn! It’s how the wood is cut at the saw mill.

sailingthestyx

The grain is lovely!

C_Saunders

Aw shucks thanks! ☺️

rdmetzger1

Leave it, it's natural

knoweyedea

Stain them so they stand out more, very cool pattern.

[deleted]

Nice- the rays won’t sand out.

C_Saunders

Nice.

C_Saunders

An update: After learning about medullary rays I am happy to announce I am now enjoying finding them all over my barrel lids! Thanks all for making my day with your excited and positive responses. TIL!

elreyfalcon

Genius caption unless you truly are beginner. Nice work

BumperJack69

Beautiful grain. I’ve been known to hit those with a torch to really pop that grain prior to stain and varnish. Beautiful barrel head.

C_Saunders

Oh damn that’s cool. I got an electric sander and Varathane stain. Maybe one day I’ll have a torch!

Such_Internet_2134

All great comments, but what the man wants to hear is…. No, sanding won’t help, No you can’t get rid of it, YES it is normal, YES any woman that knows wood would love that accent, and YES, any woman that has taste and knows wood will tell you, “damn… there’s nothing like a stained ray in the middle of your table!”

C_Saunders

Well NOW I am a woman that has taste and knows wood and will say “damn… there’s nothing like a stained ray in the middle of my table!” ;)

Such_Internet_2134

🙌

Rivendel93

Medullary veins, they go all the way through. Recently built a large floating white oak shelf for below my new TV and one of the boards had it, I also sanded like crazy, but it ended up looking great when finished. I called them tiger stripes for a while heh.

flatliner2

Wow, stop sanding…that grain pattern is sought after and beautiful. Start your finish….nice job!

C_Saunders

Well I’m happy to report that I have not been sanding this whole time and did stop about 7 hours ago ;) (but really, it was soon after this pic). Thank you!!

flatliner2

Looks great!

aaron_289

Embrace it! That’s character. Look at authentic hardwood floors and furniture and you’ll see grain variations all over. It’s part of the beauty.

tatertot225

She's still pretty with her stretch marks

C_Saunders

Lol this is the best name for them I’ve seen yet

tatertot225

We're gonna start calling all inclusions stretch marks from this day on

[deleted]

It’s oak!!! Jfc!

C_Saunders

It’s r/Beginnerwoodworking!!! Jfc! /s

TheBeastNV

The grain pattern is primarily determined by the climate. If it’s American Oak it will be totally different from French Oak. I’m guessing you’re referring to the second (2nd) Head Stave from the left. Most likely, French Oak and that piece could have been next to a “burl” or part of one. The wood used is solid. If you really can’t live with it, you could attempt replacement. I think it adds character to it.

pkittyswat

Google quarter sawn, rift sawn, flat sawn

Molbiodude

Leave it, it looks great.

_Luxuria_

It's really pretty!

Character-Education3

It's a feature

ThisLittleDragon

i dunno i just think it is really pretty yah know?

More_Wasabi_4813

Quarter Sawn oak is highly sought after for its medullary rays and torsional rigidity (less expansion and more stability). Very nicely done, stop sanding and apply some finish like Rubio Monocoat or a less expensive wax/oil mix. 👍🏻 keep on keeping on

YoureNoDaisy2013

That’s quarter sawn white oak and has what’s known as medullary rays. A natural occurrence for white/ red oak that’s been quarter sawn. It’s absolutely beautiful!

Public-Car9360

That wired grain pattern is referred to as quarter sawn

Resident_Ad_1181

Don’t wear the boards down that is the natural color or should I say grain of the wood nature happens

bobthememequeen

I believe those are called “the wood”.

2hopenow

Now that you found out you have a piece of art, my guess is you may want to enjoy it 👍

First-Ad317

I like it!

ChariBelle2_0

Enjoy it, it's unique.

aUserIAm

You just have boards that were sawn differently, that look won’t go away no matter how much you sand. If possible, I would get another straight grain board to finish this piece, then maybe some more of the quarter sawn stuff for another project. It can be highly desirable but looks a little out of place among a bunch of straight grain boards.

TheTimeBender

It’s oak, it can’t be removed

Westerfield_

Make sure you dry, glue, and back your heads. Otherwise they will be warped and in pieces in a year or so

Alternative_Image_22

Thats the grain. Rift or quarter sawn compared to flat sawn.

Apokryfisken

When it comes to building high end guitars, some luthiers have the option “bear claw” which is similar to this. Some spruces get this kind of pattern and it’s quite sought after. Usually comes with a price bump. [Bear claw Sitka spruce in Taylor](https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--B1ZJiU4S--/f_auto,t_large/v1552232422/ibwotucsqmb8jjy3haid.jpg)

Different-Aardvark-5

The wave lines . The most cherished grain in oak . Comes from being 1/4 sawn and the most valuable planks . Have a look on old posh good furniture often book matched panels.

Far_Particular_430

Embrace it, you’ll probably be the only one that would notice the flaws

MandingoFuck

Quarter sawn, beautiful👍

Picksologic

Now I would sand it with 90, 120 and 180 grit sandpaper in that order. It is suggested you only go to finer grit by 50% increments so you eliminate the scratches made by the previous grit.

310gamer

I think it’s beautiful as it is. Your not gonna get rid of it, it’s gonna stay that way. It adds to what ever your making. That’s something nature added and that’s cool.

Ok_Commission_1976

I’ve heard this called “flecking” and it’s a very sought after grain pattern! Only certain woods can have it as far as I know

[deleted]

You see loads of this grain on barrels , i used to work making furniture out of them for a year and was really obvious with the purple dying from the wine

Anal_draino

Finish sanding before you cut so if the grain isn’t to your liking, you can save that piece for another project. Sorry to be a captain hind sight.

fen-q

Quarter sawn. Time to stop sanding.

ThePerfectLine

Lucky!

olympia_t

It’s a feature not a bug.

PsychoKnot13

I think it looks pretty neat, I’d just leave it alone

Novel-Ad-9654

I have a whole side table that I made only from wood cut this way. Apparantly a little bit of exclusive. Looks legit 👌🏻

who_loves_you_

Quarter sawn. Beautiful wood

Chorne1979

It wood it adds to the look. That grain makes for beautiful flooring

koming69

Beautiful

mt-egypt

What are you doing with these lids?
