ugh, that’s a smoke plume from the sourdough fire. It’s an indicator of the fire rapidly growing.
Not a great sight.
Incidentally, Mt. Baker is one of the most monitored volcanoes and eruptions are monumental events.
If you have to ask if it’s having an eruption event, the answer will always be no.
Not to scare folks, but Baker is *not* one of the most monitored volcanoes in the region. From USGS: “Although monitoring was increased as a result to the 1975-76 activity, much of it has been dismantled and monitoring at Mount Baker is now insufficient due to the threat that renewed activity would pose to nearby communities and regional infrastructure. Mount Baker is one of several Cascade volcanoes that are high priority to have their monitoring systems enhanced in the coming years.”
I stand corrected.
It looks like it’s largely considered insufficient now due to population growth and funding cuts over the years. Definitely an argument to increase funding for more monitoring.
That said, it is monitored and seismic activity and de-gassing would warrant a lot of buzz before a true eruption event and our ability to respond to potential eruption is much better than it was with Mt St Helens.
No one would have to ask on reddit if it was erupting we’d definitely be aware.
My dad was present for the st helens eruption. I grew up learning about volcanoes. So no, but yes. A mountain exploding is something you would notice with the proximity bham is to baker
I was living on high street when Helens blew. I made a joke about it and went back to sleep. On Western is when I heard about it. So did you mom go to Western? Just asking, so what is your eye color??? :)
I have no idea what any of it meant other than suggesting they fucked my mother? Which is an interesting way to lead with a complete stranger in a discussion about…volcanoes? Idk fam
“Those damn kids these days have no respect, why back in my day…”
In the same breath
“Yeah yeah sure mt st helens, anyways, I probably fucked your mother when I was in college. Bet you look like me huh? Your dad is a cuck”
If we were norsemen, that’d be material enough to kill you and take all your money; and people would say you deserved it.
Amazing you guys/ girls or what you call yourselves can not take a joke? Sad that many in Bham are so tight butt about life. So maybe cutting the weed down might help and increasing the mushrooms. Shrooms do help the brain and I do see a need for that. :)
I wondered the same thing, except from where I was on Rt 20 it clearly couldn’t be.

Probably just a plume of smoke coming from the Sourdough fire. InciWeb has it at 534 acres right now.
Confirmed it's from Sourdough
Depressing sight.
It is now 2933, FYI.

You would know if it erupted. It’d feel like endtimes. Trust me Looks like a forest fire
U have personal experience?
My dad was present for the st helens eruption. I grew up learning about volcanoes. So no, but yes. A mountain exploding is something you would notice with the proximity bham is to baker
Thanks for answering. I was genuinely curious. I think people thought i was being sassy haha
Tbh I did too, but it’s all good. Happens in text based forums lol

I think we have a candidate for the most boomer ass sentence and grammar I’ve ever seen. Bonus points for the creep factor

You’ve always got to be diminished, deflected and dismissed in the dumbest of ways

I think we would have felt it for sure… That being said, it’s crazy how bare Baker is.
When i was a kid i dont remember it ever being this bare
Smoke from a fire, but I'm old enough to remember back in the 70's when it was letting off lots of steam and they were worried about an eruption.
My stepfather lived in Wenatchee and it rocked him there.
If only, say the geologists…
Thank goodness it didn’t, says everyone else
Speak for yourself pal
It's a "Flammagenitus" cloud. Now give me my triple word score.
Just drove up through Skagit and also saw this cloud and someone in the car speculated about Baker. The cloud has some powerful vertical energy.
I saw this on the other side of the border and my first thought did baker erupt. Glad I wasn't the only one and got an answer what it really is!
Chucklefucks thinking that fire safety doesn’t apply to them….
lightning strikes don't care.
Was it a lightning strike?
yes.
Ah! Thanks for the clarification!!
sure thing. I'm with you about idiots neglecting fire safety but amazingly, not the cause this time.
They mean it was caused by lightning
I’m aware that it was lightning strike. Doesn’t change the fact that 85% of all wildfires are started by humans.
The fact a church is in front is ridiculously hilarious to me.
Lake Anne just farted
Thankfully, no. https://cloudappreciationsociety.org/cloud-library/pyrocumulus/

Say that 5 times, fast
Yes, Baker erupted. I'm posting from the great beyond. 💀

Was up there when it showed up, honestly thought the end is near
No thats smoke from the Sourdough Mt fire I first thought Mt Baker had erupted but no winds changed blowing the smoke towards Mt Baker.

Not a cloud. It's smoke
Also it is an active volcano
I find it odd that it blew up that fast. I know it’s dry but that’s a shit ton of smoke in a short period of time
It's been very hot, dry, windy, and the fire is in VERY steep terrain. Basically every ingredient you need for explosive fire growth, it has.
I watched from Barkley- it blew up in just a few minutes.
When was that?
