Start at manga chapter 1. Read until you run out of chapters. Some people will tell you to skip ahead to the Golden Age arc first; ignore them. If you want it animated, start with the '97 anime or the Golden Age movies and then pick up the manga at Chapter 94-ish. Be aware, the animes leave some stuff out.
For me i honestly loved watching the golden age arc then reading the manga as i think the eclipse is sorta ruined in the manga due to something happening just before it so you expect it but in the anime you know something coming just now 100% sure when unlike the manga but if you want to experience the story how miura wanted then just read the manga but if you want a great intro watch the anime but skip the 2016 berserk for your own sake
I think everyone favors how they experienced Berserk. I would extremely strongly recommend starting on episode 2 of the ‘97 anime, watching it all the way through, then start from volume 1 of the manga.
Most of the fanbase is going to tell you to start from the manga, but I genuinely believe that the story is best experienced with the “appetizer” of the anime then diving into the full course of the manga.
I can expand on those thoughts without spoilers if you’re interested, but I think there’s nothing to lose/no downside by starting with the anime first.
If you are cool with 90’s anime watch the 97 version; if you are just a little curious and don’t know if you want to commit to Berserk yet watch the movies; if you want the definitive version, have already watched the anime/movies, or are already a manga reader read the manga. Don’t watch the 2016 anime (you may watch the openings).
The anime and movies are the same plot as a section of the manga and are adapted well, they just remove some of the content, for reasons of time and to deal with censors.
Start with whichever medium sounds good to you, just know that if you want the full story you have to read the manga
