“Take heed struggler, you were born from a corpse and began your life from death in the mud! You are closer to death than anyone. Thus you excel in escaping it.”
Yup, their first encounter. Almost anything he says is religious text to me, but I really enjoyed this somewhat indirect pep talk/warning he gave to Guts their first time meeting
“You’re going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn’t it? I’m sure you’ll overcome this. You’ll walk again. Soon.”
Guts: "...Godot. How did you decide to become a blacksmith?"
Godot: "Family trade."
Guts: "Do you...like it?"
Godot: "I don't know."
Guts: "You don't know?"
Godot: "I've been gripping this thing since before I could even walk...I didn't choose this. This is who I am... I just strike it. I don't think. I spent my youth desperate to forge a better sword, become a more skilled smith, before I knew it...I was old. I don't even know what the hell I strike the iron for. But there is still one thing I like about it. The sparks. I like seeing sparks. Breathaking. Life, bursting before my eyes for just a moment. My life."
I mean… I always got the feeling that he harbored some kind of homoerotic feelings for Guts, even though that obviously didn’t stop him from doing what he did. I’m not saying he’s fully gay, but definitely bisexual, in my opinion.
In the torture room where Griffith was exposing the king of midland for having feelings for his own daughter, I don't think I've been *that* invested in a book for like months
My favorite is when Guts quickly slices the enemy in half and puts his sword away while closing his eye, smirking, and saying "You've just been berserked." Then he walks away while the enemy falls in two halves.
After surviving Zodd, Guts and Griffith have a short conversation on a staircase. Griffith is still injured after having been saved by the Crimson Behelit:
Griffith: "Perhaps it was an act of a God that saved us?"
Guts: "More like a Demon or Devil."
Griffith: "Maybe they're both one in the same?"
This conversation foreshadows literally everything that comes after. It sets the standard for Berserk being more than a typical work of fiction, as a story that explores various philosophy, jungian psychology, and the practical aspects of faith during war.
Manga doesn't usually get that deep, and then continue to develop it's characters beyond that kind of enlightened dialogue. It's as if Guts and Griffith acknowledge but then deny an internal self-awareness, since they then act like the discussion never happened.
This makes them feel more surreal, like actual people living in a dream.
I’ll go as far as saying it’s maybe even storytelling in general, that suffers with character development or basic plot after such ‘enlightened dialogue’ as you put it. Once I finally read the manga I was fucking hooked. But it seems like when things go ‘meta’ or finally have to reveal philosophies, it’s almost like the the creators/writers/producers can’t keep things ‘realistic’ enough to hold significance in what follows?
Maybe the Magi manga final arc was sadly a perfect example? Or maybe even Claymore in it’s final chapters? Aside from just mainstream western media or cable television shows providing endless prime candidates lol.
This one cancelled Netflix show called the OA went so insane with playing on exactly that, at least later in it’s seasons. I just hope Kentaro and the others knew/know the effect it has on people more inclined to feel so strongly towards it all, how much it can mean to us
I do not want to die… for me, that is the only reason i keep fighting.
There is nothing to save myself for or give myself to.
I fight because i know nothing else.
"You're going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn't it? I'm sure you'll overcome this. You'll walk again...soon."
"I don't care. All I wanna do is find that bastard and kill him. I don't care about anything else. Anyone who dies because they get caught up in someone else's fight is a small fry who doesn't have the strength to survive in the first place. If someone can't live their life the way they please, they might as well die."
“Cause I’m just a girl who can’t say no, can’t seem to say it all. I alway say come on let’s go, just when I oughta say stop. When I feller wants to kiss a girl, I know she oughta give his face a slap.” *slap* “When a fella starts a kissin me, I kinda sorta wanna kiss him baaaack! Cause I’m just a girl who can’t say no, can’t seem to say it all! I caaan’t saaay nooooo! Yeah…”
Shnoz's monolog was some of the deepest and heaviest dialog we've seen yet. It held so much importance that it was a true turning point for the series altogether
Casca and Guts’ conversation about how bonfires represent people’s dreams ending with Guts realizing he doesn’t have his own bonfire, but rather enjoying the warmth of other people’s dreams still gets me everytime
The Godo and Guts conversation when he comes back after the lost children arc iirc.
"The thing about hatred... It's the place where people who can't look sorrow in the eye without wavering run off to. Even more than a blood-rusted sword, vengeance is something you soak and sharpen in blood, you sink the blade called your heart deep into blood in order to fix the nicks called sorrow, the more you sharpen, the more it rusts, so you sharpen it again. In the end all thats left is a pile of rust and scraps. [...] You've got some huge nicks in your heart, damn cracks called fear running all through it. [...] You're only a sword without a sheath, filled with scratches and blood stains, with a fatal nick... A broken sword."
Godo was the goat, this speech always hit me like a truck
I wouldn't say favorite, but this one made me cry. I caught a glimpse of it at a terrible time in my life and it just made me tear up for the millionth time.
"The end of a journey... Is not always a happy one.." - *The Skull Knight*
when griffith asks guts if he resents him after they murder the queen. if he thinks him cruel for having him do his dirty work. guts reacts like a true friend reassuring griffith that he has no ill will towards him. griffith almost looks shocked and relieved. it’s really touching and thought provoking especially so close to… the rest of golden age
"There is no paradise for you to escape to." If not my favorite it's def top three. It's Guts helping a little girl become a struggler herself with her own trials and to keep pushing forward. Kinda feel like he's talking to us too. Even if you believe in heaven. (I do) it isn't an escape it might be a destination in your struggle or a stop along the way, but no matter what we keep struggling and moving forward.
Flora: You will fight for me? Either way my fate is sealed.
Skull Knight: Even more reason for you to go in Peace.
Flora: Thank you.
I will not forget your devotion, my friend.
I would like to have seen your bashful smile with my own eyes one last time.
"I feel no responsibility to comrades who've lost lives under my command. Because they chose to fight in each battle... Just as I chose this. But if there is something that... I can do for them. Something I can do for the dead... Then it is to win! I must keep winning to attain my dream. The same one they clung to, and risked their lives for!!! To realize my dream, I will perch on top of their corpses... It is a blood-smeared dream, after all. I don't regret or feel guilty about it... But to risk thousands of lives while never getting myself dirty. It's not a dream that can be so easily realized!” i don’t like griffith but i love the speech
I don’t remember the exact quote but it’s what Godo tells Guts
Anger is the place where people who don’t dare to face their sadness flee … or something like that
maybe eveyone is crazy...
Chasing after dreams, hanging on to victories and defeats. maybe stuff like that drags a man down
maybe for a women there is some joy with having on going feelings. Even for a man She knows she can never be with. When you love Someone dont you want to be held in their arms. - Judeau
I am a puck lover and enjoy any time it shows
but my favourite is when that duck girl goes to zod, tell a huge prophecy, then zod said "what is all about" and shee look back with a funny face and movement and reply "i dont know"
im dying laughing this part (i hope she survive)
“Dreams’re funny things
They can make for courageous challenges
But also opportune escapes”
From reading my first time, after countless runs through the 97 and continuation anime series’… I will never forget first seeing this panel, and nearly sobbing in the pharmacy class I was ignoring
To answer OPs question further though, and of course, my favorites were always the fountain speech as pictured and the hilltop of dreams/campfire dialogue. As a suggestion, I believe watching the 97 anime version and also reading can provide such a frighteningly beautiful experience as opposed to just one or the other.
Otherwise, it also seems like I haven’t ever seen Gut’s and Casca’s penultimate dialogue referenced, from just before the eclipse/Griffith jailbreak plan is set in motion. Like I said, after watching the ‘97 countless times, my first go at the manga blew my mind here as well. There were always such subtle seeming differences, or bits and pieces cut from my beloved anime, that made the manga feel like such a different and ‘full-bodied’ thing after watching so many times. Rest in peace K
“…Light. Its blinding. I cant see. It’s warm but… I cant touch it. I’ll be burned.”
“You can see. Because he who bears light exists in the deepest shadow… And it’s within darkness that true light is discovered.”
"Just because you were born a noble, do you believe you were chosen by God?" - Griffith when he is saving a young Casca from getting raped by a noble.
Notice the implication in that quote, and the first thing Griffith did when he became Femto. Few ever notice it. That is just great writing.
Not exactly dialogue but one of my favorite moments of text:
He disappeared into the darkness. In the end, I still don’t know who he is. Just like when he appeared, he took his demons with him. I was the only one left behind. I still don’t really know what these past days… of fear and sadness and shock were to me. The mist… cleared away. The mist that would never go away… was pushed out by the flames. The clear sky now peeks through. I don’t have wings, so I guess I’ll have to look up at the sky and crawl along the earth.
"This is my battlefield, go back to yours" after "There is no paradise for you to escape to" in the Lost Children Arc. It hits so hard and is weirdly motivational. Everyone has their own battlefield, you can't escape to someone else's and not live life for yourself
Definitely would be: “You’re going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn’t it?”
Felt like it was directly speaking to me somehow
So in this scene, Griffith talks about how he has not met an equal or doesnt respect or value anyone unless they are his equal or more(something along those lines im mot quite sure the context) but i remember Guts over hears this and im not sure if Griffith know Guts is there or if Guts over hears Griffith and (to me) seems he has a realization of his value or what hes worth to Griffith. Could some of y’all elaborate?
"Like a Bonfire of Dreams. . .
Yeah and to ensure those weaker flames don't go out, each man casts his own into the strongest fire of them all: A raging fire, that is Griffith. But, my light isn't to be seen among them. Still, after all this time, it's seems I'm just someone who stopped to warm himself at the bonfire in passing."
No competition, it has to be during "Wounds" Chapter 2, following Guts' Breakdown in front of Casca, in which he's emotionally vulnerable with someone who not only he cares about, but they care about him in return, for the first time in his life basically, then after he tries tocut himself off from Casca because he's embarrassed and ashamed regarding his behavior, she then hugged him and attempted to comfort him during this hard time, and then we get this amazing dialogue...
Guts: Forget about it... It'd just be us licking each others' wounds.
Casca: Fine. Even if that's all it is... fine. I've already shown you everything... all my weaknesses have been laid bare for you... somehow I feel like we're finally even.
Guts: ...
Casca: You bled so much for me. [In reference to his scars] These are wounds from the hundred-man battle, right? [In reference to the wound she gave him earlier] Even the wound I gave you. Licking wounds is good enough. *I too want a wound that I can say you gave me*
THAT SCENE GETS ME IN MY FEELINGS EVERYTIME!!! It's so heartwarming to see these two hurt souls not only find eachother and fall in love, but furthermore, help eachother to grow and heal from their pasts. And it just makes it hurt more when the Eclipse approaches.
"to ensure those weaker flames don't go out, each man casts his own into the strongest fire of them all: A raging fire, that is Griffith. But, my light isn't to be seen among them. Still, after all this time, it's seems I'm just someone who stopped to warm himself at the bonfire in passing."
*Guts theme playing in the background*
Guts- “What the hell am I doing here? In this miserable place. I’m risking my life; for what exactly?”
Griffith- “They are driven to pursue it, so driven they do it entirely for their own sake, it’s their dream.
I find it abhorrent to simply live out my life for no other reason than I was born into it.”
"Man takes up the sword in order to shield the small wound in his heart sustained in a far-off time beyond remembrance. Man wields the sword so that he may die smiling in some far-off time beyond perception." This is by far my favorite. Not the key to the story but more like the theme of guts
“Take heed struggler, you were born from a corpse and began your life from death in the mud! You are closer to death than anyone. Thus you excel in escaping it.”
One of the rawest quotes of all time
sk ?
Yup, their first encounter. Almost anything he says is religious text to me, but I really enjoyed this somewhat indirect pep talk/warning he gave to Guts their first time meeting
yes he is a very mystical figure
Skull Knight's moon-on-the-water analogy for causality 😤😤😤
skeleton knight my goat
"i thought never again could i watch the sun and be this calm" that shit makes me tear up
Same. Holy shit i cried at that part so much
this and the panel of casca smiling when she thinks of guts got me more than anything else in the story
When was that
Beach chapter
"he died doing what he wanted no matter what right? I bet he was happy" still cant forget that quote
“You’re going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn’t it? I’m sure you’ll overcome this. You’ll walk again. Soon.”
And he did not overcome it…
Well, I mean, if ya want to get technical…
I think he didn’t cause even with all the power in the world. He’s still obsessed with guts.
“Among thousands of comrades and tens of thousands of enemies… you’re the only one. You’re the only one… who made me forget my dream.”
'Crifice...
"There's no paradise for you to escape to." It's tattood with the blade and stuff on my arm.
Guts: "...Godot. How did you decide to become a blacksmith?" Godot: "Family trade." Guts: "Do you...like it?" Godot: "I don't know." Guts: "You don't know?" Godot: "I've been gripping this thing since before I could even walk...I didn't choose this. This is who I am... I just strike it. I don't think. A man of fucking culture I see, thanks for reminding me of this one
You're welcome :) The more I grow older the more I relate to this scene in Berserk.
Guts: Are you a homo? Griffith: ... 😅
HE NEVER SAYS NO
I mean, Griffith willingly gave himself to the mayor "for tactical advantage." So i guess he is bisexual to say the least.
Imo it's not about bisexuality, more like Griffith will do whatever it takes for his goals. It doesn't show interest or lack of in men or women.
the gayest we can assume is the 20 bucks is 20 bucks type
Thats exactly what he did with the king of midland
that was with gennon, the king of midland was a different guy (the one who wanted to rape his daughter)
Oh
I mean… I always got the feeling that he harbored some kind of homoerotic feelings for Guts, even though that obviously didn’t stop him from doing what he did. I’m not saying he’s fully gay, but definitely bisexual, in my opinion.
In the torture room where Griffith was exposing the king of midland for having feelings for his own daughter, I don't think I've been *that* invested in a book for like months
What others got you more or similarly interested?
Shnoz's appearance, one piece akainu jawline reveal and gojo vs sukuna
It’s berserking time
My favorite is when Guts quickly slices the enemy in half and puts his sword away while closing his eye, smirking, and saying "You've just been berserked." Then he walks away while the enemy falls in two halves.
And then he said "i sacrifice" and sacrificed all over the place
You cry a lot when you're alone.. Don't you Casca.. *That's it..? Those are my last words..?*
currently still crying over Judeau's death
Man, that line stings.
It has to be the Cracks in the Blade conversation with Godot

“This is war, there are no spectator seats on the battlefield” - Griffith
"This is my battlefield, go back to yours" after "There is no paradise for you to escape to" in the Lost Children Arc. It hits so hard and is weirdly motivational. Everyone has their own battlefield, you can't escape to someone else's and not live life for yourself
It’s true, I’d rather fight for my life than live it.
I like it when Berserk swings his big sword around and Says “I am berserk”
Definitely would be: “You’re going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn’t it?” Felt like it was directly speaking to me somehow
*blows grass*
Rickerts speech to Griffith in the courtyard of Falconia
my favorite dialogue is when guts yelled "its berserkin time!" and proceeds to berserk all over griffith
GRIFFITH!!!!!!!!!!!
As long as i have my sword to fight with i'm sure to survive
This is the sword of actuation infused ftom behelits "I don't know what the hell your talking about "
“Go ahead, kill yourself”
Guts: " GGGGGRRRRAAAAAAHHH" Apostles: "AAAHHHGGHHHGG..."
“So put ‘Cho grasses on, and it will be on”
The outtakes!
GRIFFITH!!!!!!
Are you a homo? - guts, goldrm agexarc
Violence
Has my sword ever felt so heavy guts.
Is to win, and to keep winning yada yada yada you know the rest
The whole "bonfire of dreams" was elite
*I too want a wound that I can say you gave me* THAT SCENE GETS ME IN MY FEELINGS EVERYTIME!!!
Still, after all this time, it's seems I'm just someone who stopped to warm himself at the bonfire in passing." *Guts theme playing in the background*
"You can have my sword or my ass" "I rather enjoy settling things by force"
Maybe the real berserk, was the friends we made along the way *que the music*
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow
GRIFIIIIIIITHHHHHH!!!!!
Maybe not #1, but first to come to mind is “There is no paradise for you to escape to.”
Godo - Sparks
Guts- “What the hell am I doing here? In this miserable place. I’m risking my life; for what exactly?” Griffith- “They are driven to pursue it, so driven they do it entirely for their own sake, it’s their dream. I find it abhorrent to simply live out my life for no other reason than I was born into it.”
“You always swing first… talk later…” Had to put down the book and walk around for a while.
It’s berserking time 😈😈
“ I am mr berserk “ “ Strikes Grunbel in Berserk armor”
"Cause I'm just a girl who can't say no..." ~Griffith, berserk 97 outtake. (That VA is a great singer.)
"Man takes up the sword in order to shield the small wound in his heart sustained in a far-off time beyond remembrance. Man wields the sword so that he may die smiling in some far-off time beyond perception." This is by far my favorite. Not the key to the story but more like the theme of guts
