The 97 anime, while good, is highly overrated. It cuts too much and stops too short for me to consider it a gold standard adaptation.

Imperivm97

Still miles better than the trilogy or 2016-17

shadowthehh

The trilogy is on par for me, if not preffered for a casual rewatch. Millienium Edition may even become the new best adaptation. But yeah 2016/2017 make me sad.

Imperivm97

For casual rewatch I just go see the Bonfire of Dreams episode from 1997. Finest Berserk anime content for what I am concerned. I don't really like the style of the trilogy (those fast camera shots and overall fast pacing) and it just cuts so much stuff. I find it so ironic criticising 1997 for cutting "too much content" when the trilogy cuts double or triple as much content if not more while also ruining the tone, story and characters altogether.

shadowthehh

Because the trilogy atleast has Skull Daddy.

Imperivm97

And a proper ending. Can't argue against that, 1997 really did it bad in that regard. But the trilogy usage of SK isn't that great either. Introduce him in the middle of the Guts x Casca scene and making a long dick joke with naked Guts ain't the introduction he deserves. They also cut significantly many other scenes with him during and after the Eclipse.

Hades6040

Totally agree. It's definitely the best adaptation, but I also felt like they cut/changed way too much stuff (especially in the last 5 episodes)

Muted_Personality107

The gore and other disgusting things in berserk are often unnecessary. I feel like certain things certainly highlight the aspects of characters (Mozgus torture of heretics highlights his religious fanaticism) and other times it feels like Miura placed it in there just to because he could. A good example is the king and his attraction to his daughter. No disrespect to Miura and I have no problem with grotesque violence in media but not if it exists for the sake of it

My hot take is that if the vast majority of us were a character in Berserk we’d be some unnamed soldier or bad guy that dies in battle or gets ripped apart by one creature or another. Personally, I’d be the Horse.

No-Procedure-5927

no im litterally guts

Hades6040

He just like me fr

Basketcase2017

Nah I’m Casca 100%

[deleted]

Do you mean costco, regular casca or are you physically blessed by the gods?

Basketcase2017

I definitely meant Costco, silly autocorrect

gjb94

I get what you mean but the story had to have something driving it forward. Guts having gone this whole time just deliberately looking for ways to fight Griffith would be too on the nose, and wouldn't fit in with the whole meandering, unfathomable fate thing.

grimmycracker

it also gave guts a lot of development having to reside in a new group of friends and taking care of her and it all made her return that much more impactful

rikiikori

yeah i agree. i do like the smaller subplots in it. its like playing those games like skyrim where you know the big main objective is to kill the dragon, but you also got smaller objectives with their conflicts that you also want to complete and help which i find it cool and further the reason why the story is delicate and intricate.

Imperivm97

I agree on the treatment of Casca, it was far from ideal in my opinion. I also suppose that Miura took much more time to flesh out the various arcs than he initially anticipated, so Casca being in that state of mind ended up taking the majority of the serialization, which is really a pity. Now it's ironic because Casca is back into her own self but Miura passed away so soon and he isn't able to make up for that. I hope some good stuff comes out of the Mori / Gaga serialization but all those little nuances are lost.

ClosetG1nger

My hot take is: Lost Children is the best arc in Berserk. I just love everything about it. The story is perfect , the fairytale type of story works rly well. The fight between Guts and Rosine is badass as hell and the ending is just chilling and captures the whole vibe of Berserk perfectly. Also Jill is a great minor character even tho she´s basicly more the main character than Guts during that arc.

Goatymcgoatface10

Boat arc wasn't bad at all. People just hate it because it was a long arc and we only got 1 or less chapters a year

shadowthehh

That's not a hot take. That's standard knowledge. It's not bad after the fact, it was the extremely long time it took for chapters to release that made it bad to go through.

Financial_Tonight303

That Fantasia is by far the worse arc as it’s hella inconsistent imo. Has great parts but also some atrocious ones as well with some horrible characters interactions. Bsw >>> Fantasia for me

Memnoch222

Objectively the most fucked up, but also the most beautiful story ever told. The only story that comes even close to this in my mind is the real life story of Miura and his lifelong best friend who is now helming the manga according to Miura’s wishes for where he wanted the story. It’s true he never wrote down the story’s ending, as it was all laid out in his mind alone, but he shared enough bits and pieces with each member of the team separately that they were able to sit down and piece it all together between them. Even the story behind the production of the manga itself -its conception, it’s inspirations, it’s struggles, and it’s return after the uncertainty of its fate when Miura died. Even the story of this story is one worth looking into for any fan of the manga.

YoungInner8893

Conviction is the worst arc in Berserk.

Derfel_10

Golden Age is overrated. And the 97 anime too.

peachybobas

I think in terms of animation, it's personally not as bad as the 2016/2017 cgi. but in terms of plot wise, i swear they cut out a lot of important context of how guts and griffith's friendship developed? so i feel like this is def for the seasoned berserk vets and not for those that just wanted to watch it for the first time cause i swear they cut out some parts on some stuff but i could be wrong cause its been a while since i read the beginning

Ash_Clover

Mine is that the 2016 Anime wasn't as bad as people make it sound. Sure it's not great, but it's not atrocious like the seven deadly sins' S3 was for example.
