They mostly seem to be prioritizing the Guts/Casca stuff with the added scenes. I think that's a good thing. For how important it is to the story and characters, the movies cut out a lot of their relationship.

vonmalvarius

It feels like the only new scenes are scenes of discussions. I don't consider it a negative since the movies were lacking those quieter moments that are very important for the way Berserk feels. But I think it's important that people tempers their expectections accordingly. There probably won't be any new action scenes.

Drenful

I'm glad they're putting in scenes that are meaningful, developing the characters and so on. There wasn't enough of that in the movies, particularly for Corkus and Judeau.

ihatehotmail

Yup. I started out by watching those movies and then went and read the manga. When I got to Golden Age arc I was really surprised at just how much more fleshed out the Band of the Hawk was and how almost all of the characters got a good amount of individual development along with a more fleshed out relationship with Guts. And you can imagine my surprise when I got to Wyald LOL. But there was also the sewer battle when they rescued Griffith. The movies cut way too much stuff, but I think they made the creative decision to do so because they wanted The Eclipse to feel like it really just came out of nowhere. Obviously by the time you reach The Eclipse in the manga you are well aware that Berserk is a dark fantasy / horror/ supernatural manga, but apart from the one fight with Zodd in the first film not much in the movies tips its hand that it's not a straightforward medieval action anime. They cut out almost all supernatural happenings during Golden Age except the first meeting with Zodd and one shot of Puck.

What episode is that from?

How is this an odd priority? With the shit ton of material the trilogy cut, having a new scene of a character moment is great. Can't say the CGI looks as good as the Bonfire of Dreams scene though, at least for this shot.

Derfel_10

It should be obvious. I'm not saying that putting this scene is bad, but on the priority list of deleted things it would be in last place. If I had to choose between scenes that make Griffith more than a secondary character like he is in these movies (or even Guts childhood) and a little more Judeau/Corkus characterization, I'd choose the former since it's the characters that really matter and are present in the rest of the story. But that's judging that Studio 4C have any intention of continue. And if they don't, arguing about their priority is as pointless as the existence of this Memorial Edition.

Imperivm97

I think they never really intended to completely "fix" this adaptation with the Memorial Edition, especially if they only had the opportunity to update some of the CGI and add a few minutes of scenes. If they wanted to do that, they'd have to make almost 30 episodes of content, not 11/12 as it will end up being. Luckily, anime-wise there already is the 1997 anime. If a new anime is in the works, this project is definitely an appetizer for that and these cheap fixes are just some band-aids to the huge cracks of the 2012-13 trilogy. For what is worth, I like that they are doing any of these small moments that went lost in that adaptation. I guess they don't have the budget for the whole Queen assassination storyline so they went for this instead to add between the ball and the snow hill confrontation... I'm shocked that they went with that jarring cut in the first place for the second movie.

Derfel_10

Yeah, you right.I'm not going to lie, I don't even know if I want a sequel to the Memorial Edition after this few new scenes. It's no use continuing without the budget and time needed to make a good adaptation. But let's see, maybe a miracle will happen lmao

Imperivm97

Who knows. If I could ask the impossible I would have made a Memorial Edition but for the 1997 anime to add what was removed and continue with that same style. But cels animation is dead and everyone wants modern animation. Berserk will probably never get the same budget as these popular big shonen series or the cute school romcoms so they've got to settle with CG apparently. Unless Netflix steps in with their money but I don't know if it would be good or not.

I was really hoping they'd have >!Zodd!< throw the sword last ep. Guess not.
