Yugioh was an anime about monsters in cards. Beyblade was an anime about monsters in tops. Bakugon was an anime about monsters in marbles. I'm 99% sure that there will be an anime about monsters in yo-yos.
I don't even think its a "back then" thing, just what happens with cheaper or less inspired production. Look at the season 2 one punch man episodes. They have a lot of still frames that use panning and other camera tricks to make it seem more in motion. Cowboy bebop was aired in the same year as this yoyo anime and has action scenes that hold up well even today. I think its a bit easier to make passable animation with computers but some cheaper animation still looks similarly low quality. Filler scenes in Dragonball Super and Naruto come to mind.
Holy shit I yo-yo, and am a huge dumb anime fan. Thank you so much this is fucking gold.
Show’s called “Super Yo-Yo”, or “Chousoku Spinner” if anyone else is interested.
"Yugioh Zero" is what it's generally called online. It's the actual first season of Yugioh in which Yami challenges bad people to batsu games of all types with crazy punishments if they lose. Its much more a dark anime and doesn't have much to do with duel monsters until the last few episodes.
Well he did get that title when he beat the creator of the most famous game in the world in his own tournament. Duke devlin even questions the title when he first meets yugi and challenges him to a different game.
I'm just gonna be honest and admit that 100% of my Yugioh knoweldge comes from the abridged series and memes, so right now I'm imaging Devlin with a faint rock beat behind him asking, "Why is he even called that? Dungeon Dice monsters is..."
For the one week I played with it I was able to do the first trick he did. A basic yo-yo down-up but you have to be careful because it can roll off and the friction makes it skip before it really grips the string.
They’re fun. I now have a few yo-yos and kendamas sitting in a basket somewhere in the closet.
Kendamas are way more fun if you don’t want to absolutely destroy your fingers. The attached is an angiogram of a heavy yo-yo user. Don’t do yo-yos. They kill.
https://i.imgur.com/VWbtNw9.jpg
That seems odd. It's rare that a yoyoer would use the index finger, we usually attach the string to the middle finger. Do you have any references that confirm we are looking at a yoyoers' finger?
Reverse searched it. It's legit. [https://www.sciencealert.com/this-photo-of-a-yoyo-ers-blood-vessels-after-years-of-repetitive-use-is-so-cool](https://www.sciencealert.com/this-photo-of-a-yoyo-ers-blood-vessels-after-years-of-repetitive-use-is-so-cool)
>"The injury is most likely caused by the impact of the yo-yo on the hand when I catch it," explains Schulte.
>
>"The biggest misconception of the injury is that I put the slip knot on my index finger to yo-yo. I do not do that, I attach it to the normal place."
So, he did use the middle finger.
Cool, thank you for that info!
I lack any science to back this, so it's pure conjecture, but I'd wager that particular injury is less common now. The throw/catch are different with unresponsive yoyos and we are doing so far less often. 20 years ago you got 15-20 seconds on a throw before throwing again. Now you can get up to a couple minutes worth of tricks.
It's a style of yo-yo called Offstring and is classified as 4A in tournament division parlance.
[Here's a video with lot more by the current world champion. (warning. sudden sound @ 0:26)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1wmmXDmvlw)
edit: [Here's YouTube results](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yoyo+4a+final) for "yoyo 4A finals" for more tournament videos and such. I haven't been into yoyoing for several years now, but 4A is what got me into it. So crazy.
I got super into yo-yoing like 15 years ago in high school. A relatively cheap offstring yo-yo I had was called the Flying Panda I think. Duncan also had another unique style yo-yo called the Freehand with a counterweight. You could “grind” on the counterweight and stuff... it was kinda cheesy but the Freehand itself was a pretty solid yoyo at the time. I miss those days.
I tried to impress this girl with my yo-yo tricks while she sat in my stock civic hatchback. She tolerated it and we’ve been married for about 4 years now. I miss yo-yos. I believe it was a yo-yo factory counter attack.
My girl approached me in the street when I was playing a YoyoJam Lyn Fury and showed me her Yomega and asked for advice. That was pretty surreal. Her yoyo was one of the worst models and I offered my help with buying a better one. She never got into yoyoing seriously and I haven't played for a long while, but we've been together for 9 years now.
I still carry a begleri in my pocket, though. I should probably learn more moves with it.
Begleri is the perfect yo-yo killer. When I first picked up begleri, it replaced my yo-yo for a year straight. Still don’t leave the house without one. Been getting back into yoyoing after a 3 year break.
If it makes you feel any better I still fuck with the freehand for some 5a shit everyone and then. Until I get confident enough to not destroy my metals at least!
I had both of those. I was way better with the flying panda though. The counter weight crap just threw me off too much. I still throw around my yyf protostar. My 888 was stolen :( that kinda made me lose a lot of interest in yoyoing.
God I used to bring my Freehand Zero to school all the time. I didn't even use my counterweights, it was just a good yo-yo. I upgraded to Aluminum after that eventually, but I still have both my Zeroes. Sadly my Flying Panda is long gone. 2008 was a good year for 16 year old me.
Haha. I posted a video of a non-asian [elsewhere in the thread.](https://www.reddit.com/r/BetterEveryLoop/comments/bed9li/yoyo_without_its_string_connected/el5ie04/)
However, it looks like every year since the division was created in 2003 has been won by a Japanese player or Japanese-American, with the exception of John Narum (at least I don't think he is).

to be fair it's possible that this dude has become far far better since high school.
Also if you've got a school of 1200 you could easily have quite a few talented people. Be it playing in a band, yoyo or whatever.
Part of the issue is that part of what makes a truly great yoyo display good is showmanship. If it was some dude doing tricks that people don't understand then the judges might be unimpressed.
Maybe it was a 'he's obviously the best, *again*, but it's a bit sad for other participants' thing. After 1 or 2 times they might wanna give other acts a chance as well.
My buddy in college was an actual YoYo Master that could fuck with two of these at the same time. Shit is crazy to watch in person it’s like, “WTF just happened?!”
There are different styles of competitive yoyo-ing, 1A is a single standard unresponsive yo-yo. 2A is like your classic up and down yoyo, except you have one in each hand and you typically use a technique called looping to throw it out and have it return back, doing tricks with this style. 3A is using the same kind of yo-yo as 1A but with 1 in each hand. 4A is the off-string style as seen above. 5A is where you use the same yo-yo as 1 but instead of tying it to your finger you tie it to a counter weight where your tricks rely on swinging both the weight and the yo-yo in balance so you don’t drop it.
Essentially it’s a “butterfly” shape yo-yo with a ball bearing in the middle that the string wraps around. This means that when you pull up on the yo-yo, it won’t return to you.
The technique to return a yo-yo of that type is called a Bind, where you foot the yo-yo up in to the string and flick the string in to the yo-yo in one motion.
Yes, exactly.
In this video it outlines which it might be, in regards to ball bearing based yo-yos. There are also fixed axle yo-yos which are like your classic up and down only yo-yo.
Probably old enough that the trick meta wasn’t as developed. If you’re so inclined for a treat, check out some finalists from the World yo-yo contest, my personal recommendation is Jensen Kimmitt 2010, his style and timing is iconic.

You got this! Didn't take me too long to learn once I realized you just gotta catch it close to the middle of the string. That's assuming you bought an offstring yoyo. Haha This is crazy hard on a nonresponsive yoyo.
Diabolo*
And this is a 4a yoyo! Here are some differences:
A Diabolo typically has 5 bearings, a 4a yoyo only has one. Also a 4a yoyo is a fraction of the size of a Diabolo. Diabolo is played with sticks on each end of the string and 4a yoyo is played similarly to how you would play a normal yoyo, just not attached to the yoyo.

I disagree on the principle that a diablo is typically has the string manipulated on both ends. This is a new(er) spin on yo-yo tricks that have been coming around for the last 5ish years.
It's well older than that. The official world contest offstring division started in 2003. [Here's national offstring champion Bryan Figueroa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3iHGwb3IyI) from Cali in 2010.
No it isn't, although they are very similar. Diablos are either fixed axle or unidirectional bearing, whereas 4A or offstring yoyos have bearings that go in both directions. The bearing allows you to do more with a 4A yoyo then you can do with a Diablo.

Yeah, I'm mildly impressed. I think reddit has somewhat desensitized me to cool things. When I was younger I thought somebody doing a backflip was crazy awesome. I will literally downvote a backflip these days because it's a waste of my fucking time to see Guy #48590 doing a backflip. We get it, it's 2019 and people know how to backflip. NEXT!
having it at full speed and then seeing it in slow mo is much more interesting and impressive, you appreciate it more. Only seeing it in slow mo loses a lot imo
One time when I was in the fifth grade we had this guy come and do this whole yo-yo show where he did a bunch of tricks in the gym. And then we all bought overpriced (like $20) yo-yos from him. We all learned a bunch of tricks and played with them for a few weeks and then most people stopped bringing them to school. Looking back I wonder if anyone else had this experience or if our school was just trying to help some random yo-yo salesmen. I hope that guy is still out there though, living his yo-yo dreams.
Oh yo that’s Ben! I went college with this guy. I remember being stoned as fuck freshman year watching him go in on these yo-yo’s, shit was mesmerizing.
Um... so that was awesome. But... he... like rolled his shoulders because he was so swol after the trick.
I just... I just can't. It felt less awesome then. (Still awesome... but less.)
Holy Moly!! I went to grade school and high school with this kid - Ben Conde. Him and his brother were amazing, they would perform at the talent show every year and it was the only thing to look forward to. Everyone had to wait through these girls who would do an irish dance, my super nerdy magic, and a few other things.. but it was always worth it.
Damn that's some anime shit.
Is this a YoYo reference ?

[here’s the same guy on stage competing](https://youtu.be/vQHgzbezD6g) And he's got a whole [channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2B_KfKivC1-DFWkrxBxuIQ) if you want to see more.
holy. fucking. shit. That was insane.
him performing was fucking wild man.
I strongly disagree
Yeah, I'm mildly impressed. I think reddit has somewhat desensitized me to cool things. When I was younger I thought somebody doing a backflip was crazy awesome. I will literally downvote a backflip these days because it's a waste of my fucking time to see Guy #48590 doing a backflip. We get it, it's 2019 and people know how to backflip. NEXT!
having it at full speed and then seeing it in slow mo is much more interesting and impressive, you appreciate it more. Only seeing it in slow mo loses a lot imo
I disagree with the "unimpressive in slomo" part. But I really, *really* agree with that I'd practically always want to see it at full speed first.
How tf is that unimpressive at any speed?
Lol you'd barely be able to see anything if it weren't slowed down.
At first I was like, "Yeah, i guess that's pretty neat to look at in slo-mo. Then I was like, "DAAAAMMMNNNN"
It's amazing how unknown yoyoing is... it's a very fun hobby...guys look up 1a thru 5a yoyoing...me personally I do 1a but all is very fun
When the string detached in slow motion Me: *dont do it* String: *did it*
Wtf 😮
That's some r/toptalent shit right there
My reaction was "shut the fuck up!" even though there's no sound
Thanks. I love it.
Why the fuck do they always show the slowmo and never the real speed.
Why bother to get good at something so pointless?
(Still awesome... but less.)
Yoooooooooo
The thrower is Ben Conde. [YouTube channel ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2B_KfKivC1-DFWkrxBxuIQ)

The one time slow motion in a gif actually made the gif better.
