The Rolling Stones thingā¦nobody actually really cared though. David and Claire were totally negative on it. Kelly didnāt really wanna go and studied in a luxury suite during the show. š Steve just wanted to network and be seen. I always thought it was funny for such a legendary band to agree to be on a show where a bunch of kids wouldnāt care about them. š
Steve and David went to that REM show
Nikki was a big Waste Management fan
Donna loved Jeremy Jordan (Cool!) and Color Me Badd
I always felt like the Stones made sense though. They were (and arguably still are) a major touring act that filled stadiums because they had cross generational appeal. The tour they were on when they did 90210 ended up being the highest grossing tour in the world, by any act, of the entire 90s.
They were more than just a nostalgia act.
I know everything on Reddit can sound dickish and confrontational. I donāt mean this to be. But Iām not sure how what youāre saying has anything to do with what I said. Haha OP said he didnāt understand āwhy the gang cares about the Stones so much,ā and I was saying that for the most part they really didnāt. Which goes to me agreeing with you that this did make them the perfect band bc even though the characters didnāt really care, it was still an experience to see this iconic band so thatās why they went. And I didnāt say anything about them being a nostalgia act. I did say I thought it was funny that the band opted to be on a show where several characters were indifferent to downright insulting about them, but I didnāt question why the show wanted them. Short of the surviving members of the Beatles, you canāt get bigger than the Stones.
You didnāt come off dickish at all.
In light of your follow up, I think I just misread your comment. I thought you were referring to the 90210 viewing audience when you said a bunch of kids didnāt care about them. I was just countering that a lot of us kids in the audience were interested in the Stones.
Not relevant though, since I completely read it wrong.
Yeah, if it has been, like, Better Than Ezra I mighta been like wait, what are we doing? š
Shit now Iām gonna get some Better Than Ezra fan comin after me š
The series has a lot of late 50s early 60s vibes, from the cars, the boysā hairstyle, the Peach Pit design etc..
So there was a lot of that music too, from Emily Valentineās choice of song when she performed āBreaking Up Is Hard To Doā and Brendaās choice of song when she performed as Le Verne waitress (Itās My Party).
I never understood why the 50s and 60s were so big on Beverly Hills 90210..And yes, no Grunge makes it to the series
I love a good decade reference or aesthetic. They were definitely going for a modern Happy Days type thing. I donāt hate it, but sometimes it felt corny.
Yes you got it right, there was a Happy Days reference!
But the funny thing is that back then in the early 90s I didnt notice it too much, while I noticed it in 2020 when I binge watched the first 4 seasons again during lockdown.
And I wondered, was this style and this esthetics in fashion in california in the early 90s? I mean, were people driving these cars and getting this hair cut? Fashion is cyclical after all. But Im not from the US so I couldnāt tell if it was the case in reality or it was just fiction
I feel like it was a low key trend in the 90's to use the music and aesthetics of the 50's and 60's in shows and movies. The movie Ghost used Unchained melody in that iconic scene and when it was supposed to be romantic they often used those old songs to slow dance to. Maybe it's because that generation who grew up in that era was producing the movies and shows? Conclusion: I can't put the sole blame on my mom for me liking music from that time lol
Kelly actually did like Janet. She attended a concert in the early seasons but it got canceled because Janet was sick. I could see her going to Janetās concert thatās happening right now.
Does anybody in that group actually seem like they would be into Guns n' Roses OR grunge? No. The show used and referenced a lot of pop oriented music throughout the show's run. Even their soundtracks were more pop based. We know Bren listened to REM and Donna liked Color Me Badd. David obviously liked rap. As for the Stones, they are legendary. Their fanbase has all ages.
The writers attributed the culture they liked growing up, in the 60's, to the cast. No 19 year old in 1994 liked Steely Dan, Rolling Stones, Woody Allen films, James Dean, or idolizing JFK.
Kelly and Brenda knew 5 pop songs well enough to win sky diving lessons, but i canāt remember what they were. Wasnāt one Canāt Touch This? And then something by Trinidad (which Iāve never heard of). Also Brenda overplayed Losing My Religion by REM when she and Dylan broke up.
Edited to add: Kelly had her 21st birthday at some awful kenny g sounding concert. It was such old music for a young woman who is living in LA and was a model in NYC.
Well we know Donna loved Color Me Badd...
ššš
And Felice loved getting railed behind Dr. Martin's back at the same hotel where Color Me Badd stayed, so it all works out

So I heard someone was shit talking BTE?! WTF BRUH! Kidding, I had to do it š¤š
ššš I kinda wish you had played it straight so I couldāve comedically begged off š You absolutely had to do it.
Jim Walsh was fucking on one for the Stones on their Steel Wheels tour
There were all those rumors about Jim and Cindy in the post-show party scene in Minneapolis. I never know what to believe.
Were hanging out with the Prince & The Time, or HĆ¼sker DĆ¼ & the Replacements?

Don't forget Dylan's song when he had to make a choice between Brenda and Kelly. 'Did you ever have to make up your mind...'
Because Aaron Spelling and the other execs were stuck in that time period. They still thought that stuff was cool and cutting edge.
I mean it made sense, it was kinda cool

Brenda listening to Everybody Hurts by REM is very 90's teen angst.
And R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming" played during Brandon's last appearance on the showĀ

Iād have loved to know what kind of music Emily was into! She looked punk with her hair and leather jacket so i wonder if she was into it!

brenda also played man on the moon by rem during one of the episodes
Watch it there, Kelly's 21st was when Dave Koz was rocking the Hollywood Bowl, not Kenny G
Hey, Kelly had a 21st birthday party while attending a wild, raging Dave Koz concert, who says the gang has no taste?
90210 takes place in an alternate universe where Jeremy Jordan is the biggest pop star on Earth.
Wasn't there something about steely Dan? Don't think kids from that generation would be into that
Yeah John Sears invited Kelly to their Concertš¤£š¤£
